Every day's a good day to stop making it worse.

What, you haven't breathed enough smoke yet? Still pretending it's always been this bad? You're not even fooling yourself any more...

"Cities in North America all caught the same mania of city building where you just try to stuff as many cars through a downtown as you can rather than making places people wanted to actually spend time in. Cities are better when you're not just racing through them in your own enclosed metal box."

"I left a doctor's office inspired to work on the diet & get more exercise in my life but what I was going to do that wasn't going to be a drag? I was literally walking by the on 12th that were still new at that time & I thought, 'oh, hey, why don't you just get a bike?' So I got a bike!"

"Most surveys show there's around 20% of cyclists that are 'hardcore' & going to ride no matter what. Which means there's a huge %age, say 50 to to 70% who basically say, 'look, if it was more comfortable, safer & convenient I would definitely do it & do it more.'"

@failedLyndonLaRouchite Ah too bad. I'm a big tall fella and got tired of being hunched over to ride so I ordered these thingers online that bring the handles up a good 6 inches or so, makes all the difference

The data on are clear & consistent: GREAT for cities in just about every metric you can think of. So why are politicians across Canada attacking them? We dig in with 's Doug Clark & Alyssa Quinney

I live in an apartment downtown & couldn't tell you the last time I mowed a lawn, shovelled a driveway, paid for parking or got stuck in traffic. I walk a block to the grocery store & never need a shopping cart. It's the best I've ever lived

Bentley OP ,
@Bentley@canada.masto.host avatar

@failedLyndonLaRouchite Agreed. For me, amogst other things, I bike to outdoor stairs that go up the sides of hills overlooking my city of Calgary, atop of which I'm rewarded with a consistently stunning views of the city and usually doggos!

Bentley OP ,
@Bentley@canada.masto.host avatar

@failedLyndonLaRouchite I bike year-round in this city and what you're saying holds as true here anywhere. Typically by the time I finish my ride my coat is open because I've worked up a sweat

🧵 Dear Republican lawmakers,

Canada has the largest intact boreal forest on the planet.

An increasingly hotter world due to makes longer dry seasons, far larger wildfires & yes, more smoke. No amount of "raking" fixes it. The scientists warned of exactly this for a very long time /1
https://www.nationalobserver.com/2025/08/06/news/more-republican-lawmakers-demand-legal-action-over-canadian-wildfire-smoke

Bentley OP ,
@Bentley@canada.masto.host avatar

The Republican Party in America nd their ideological twins, Canada's "Conservatives" marched in lockstep with the world's oil companies in denying the science of human-caused & slow-walking if not outright outlawing the solutions, profiting mightily the whole time.

You lit the match /2

Illustration showing the climate feedback loop caused by fires. It begins with increased carbon emissions fueling climate change, leading to hotter, drier conditions. These conditions dry out forests, making them more prone to fires. As fires become more frequent and intense, larger areas burn, releasing more carbon emissions, which further fuels climate change.

    The fires (that remember, YOU lit) are everywhere, most certainly including under governments/presidents from both parties. The climate disasters themselves might be the only truly bipartisan thing left in your country.

    The were only 6 months ago.

    You lit those too.

    And if it isn't Canada or America's west coast again it's Australia. Or Russia. Japan. You-name-it.

    There's always been wildfires but it's never been this bad. Again, this was all predicted and every single chance we've had to fix it has been stopped in its tracks by a "leader" exactly like you /4

    Wherever you go, show me a political leader calling themselves a "conservative" & I'll show you a denier of who now has to resort to increasingly sillier reasons for the world we all see burning around us.

    And political stunts like letters to Canada

    But yes the smoke sucks. In Calgary we breathe 100s of more smoke hours now than we did just 8 years ago. I assure you literally NOTHING has changed about how we manage forests in that time. What's changed, irrefutably, you total imbecile, is the temperature of the planet /6

    Bentley OP ,
    @Bentley@canada.masto.host avatar

    As a Canadian I'll NEVER apologize for that smoke you're breathing because not only did you (& America's Republicans & Canada's "Conservatives") light the match but you're STILL pouring gas on the fire & lining your pockets with oil bucks while you do it /7 https://yaleclimateconnections.org/2025/01/the-fossil-fuel-industry-spent-219-million-to-elect-the-new-u-s-government/

    But one thing I do understand is wanting somebody to blame for all this. I'll do you one better: I know not only who's to blame but who should pay every one of your constituents for that smoke they're breathing. The best thing about it? They've got all the money in the world /8 https://www.podcastics.com/episode/377291/link/
