There's some reported productivity rises in sectors that have adopted AI more widely, but this uplift is self-reported & driven by opinion surveys, not economic data.

Accepting that economic data lags, nonetheless no such uplift is (yet?) visible in actual economic data.

So the Q. is:

is the AI productivity uplift merely a figment of over-active business imagination... or:

like most technological advances, AI's impact on productivity will take time to work through?

Being productive is knowing what to do and what not to do.

There's been an uptick in productivity data in the UK.... but the Q. is: is this just a blip or the start of a revival of productivity growth (perhaps driven, some will no doubt claim, by the deployment of AI)?

Actually it looks like after 3 or 4 years of 'labour hoarding', keeping on under-employed staff (a trend during & after Covid), recent shifts in employers National Insurance have resulted in low-wage jobs (and workers) being 'let go'... increasing productivity.

Two features I wish would improve are Lists and Private mentions.

Lists is a confusing feature with no explanation or onboarding.

Meanwhile, private mentions don't align with people's mental model of how sending DMs works.

should have a subject field for all status posts so that a decent reader can list subject lines only. This view would be akin to a mail or news reader layout with a subject pane and a viewer pane. The splayed-out, real-estate gobbling, all-or-nothing, vertical feed view is highly annoying and counter-productive. This default layout forces users to see every word and image in the feed, providing a sensory experience of total information overload. This mobile-first, low-IQ presentation is migraine fuel.

A system isn’t a goal. It’s not a process. It’s not even a way of doing something. It’s a mechanism you follow slavishly.

All you need is:

  • the ability to determine the next (atomic) task

  • ability to prioritize

  • lists:

— next tasks (reminders even if today/tomorrow)

— backlock list per project/area

  • calendar for scheduled events.

Tasks do not belong in calendars–EVER

Paul Donovan (UBS) argues stagnating productivity figures reflect the rise of the (often undocumented0 side-hustle;

rather than productivity being relatively stagnant, workers have divided their work, capturing tech's productivity enhancement(s) in their other economic activities (side-hustles).

Given the (relative) small scale of this activity its just often not seen by economists & statisticians.

Its an interesting solution to the UK's productivity puzzle.
