HMRC - incompetent, uncaring and they don’t even care who knows….

The revelations come just weeks after it emerged that at least 63% of those who had their child benefit stopped were in fact still living in the UK and had not emigrated, as inferred by incomplete Home Office data used in the crackdown.

I suspect not a wrist will even be slapped. Anyone remember Windrush and the Home Office? Similar story and outcome.

Faulty & incomplete data on travel has led the HMRC to erroneously seek to remove benefits from 35,000 families who travelled via idiosyncratic routes leading them to be seen (in data terms) as having emigrated....

Once again the costs of UK state's own failings in data collection & management (recall Windrush for instance) are pushed onto the population.

Given the (worrying) rise of the surveillance capabilities of the state, why can't they get this right?

AWS goes down. Takes down UK Gov login gateway, including HMRC login. What kind of brain-dead idiot decided to base a key government gateway on an overseas cloud service ??

This toot got some interest and I'd like to learn more about filing taxes in a free and open way in the UK. A Lemmy community might be more appropriate for such a broad topic so I made one on the UK-centric feddit.uk:

Subscribe and share any thoughts on Making Tax Digital (both as individuals and businesses), filing taxes, accounting with free and open source software etc.

Any other UK business people and FOSS lovers seen the HMRC changes coming to how business taxes are filed?

> From 1 April 2027, all companies will need to file their annual accounts using commercial software. This means we'll be closing our web and paper-based systems for account filings on that date.

At a quick glance the lists of commercial software contains NO open source/libre options. Looks like a win for proprietary.
