OMG I hate FB with the heat of 10,000 suns. I use Messenger with my family, otherwise deleted the app and stay away except to lurk every now and then. Last night I sent a message to my family that we had landed safely in Vietnam, and shortly thereafter was bounced out. Password no longer worked. Process to reset password resulted in screen that said that I must sign in from another device, but same process, same message in the end. I'm stuck in an endless loop that never lets me sign in. 1/2
So I guess I'm finally done with FB and Messenger for good. I refuse to waste any more time and energy trying to log into what has basically become an open sewer, and I don't want to be subjected to any more ads and data harvesting. I told my family to text from here on in. I'm done. 2/2 #DeleteFacebook#FacebookSucks
Be very mindful about the content you consume online.
You might think you are above its negative influence on your mood and thoughts, but you aren't. Nobody is.
The content you consume influences the way you think over time. Even if you are on a platform to fight the opposition, what the algorithm is feeding you there will have an influence on yourself over time.
Any game workers here who've managed to cut themselves off from corporate social media without career/networking/collaboration consequences? I know so many game industry alums who are older and only use Facebook, but it's hard to evangelize fedi/ActivityPub without being perceived negatively.

the ai summary led me to believe whatsapp was incorporated; it looks more like it was seller's remorse:
The past tense and wistfulness hang in the air. More than four years ago, Acton and his cofounder, Jan Koum, sold WhatsApp, which had relatively insignificant revenue, to Facebook for $22 billion, one of the most stunning acquisitions of the century. Ten months ago he left Facebook, saying he wanted to focus on a nonprofit. Then in March, as details of the Cambridge Analytica scandal oozed out, he sent a Tweet that quickly went viral and shocked his former employers, who had made him a billionaire many times over: “It is time. #deletefacebook.” No explanation followed. He hasn’t sent another Tweet since.
In einem offenen Brief warnen Organisationen aus dem Bildungsbereich vor pauschalen Handyverboten an Schulen. Kinder und Jugendliche würden damit entmündigt. Auch über die Social-Media-Nutzung wird weiter diskutiert.

But in my own opinion, boycotts work for products and services that you pay for; personally refusing to use services that rely on money from other business, less so. The #DeleteFacebook movement has existed since at least 2017. Twitter loudly hemorrhaged users after the Musk buyout. "DeGoogle" has been a thing since 2006. Small business, progressives, and others have been advocating boycotting Amazon for over a decade... and yet they all still exist, they are all still bad actors, and show no signs of getting any better.
The people who have left those services are better off, and that's good -- better than good! But these corporate ogres haven't stopped destroying society because of it. They haven't even slowed down.
To look at it another way: ALL of these corpos fear government regulation, especially in labor and fair business practices: You know that's true because they ALL spend billions fighting it tooth and nail.
The New York Times found three prominent users on X who feuded with Mr. Musk in December only to see their reach on the social platform practically vanish overnight.
@kevinrothrock I don't doubt this for a moment. People who are still on X because they think they are somehow going to change hearts and minds, are kidding themselves. Their content is very unlikely to be spread far and wide. They are just hanging out in a Nazi bar taking to themselves. #USPol#DeleteX#DeleteInstagram#DeleteFacebook
Mark could speak up. He could take a stand. He could use even a fraction of his power to defend the institutions and principles he once claimed to cherish.
Instead, he cringes. He capitulates. He collaborates.
This man is a coward. And no amount of corporate jargon or performative masculinity can make that stain go away.
Diary of an ASD Squirrel. Day 450 , Monday 20/01/2025
Monday started 2 minutes before the alarm went off at 8am.
It has been a dull & cold day, snow was threatened by my weather app but it never appeared.
I got a form to fill in from the Peeps who are supposed to be doing my ADHD assessment (no date for that yet) not sure if its an indication of things starting to happen or if they’re just checking I’m still alive!
Mrs S was out at her Mums for most of the day so peace reigned & after I finished my chores I hit the PS5 & played DD2 for a decent chunk of time, really enjoying it now - have mastered my first vocation (Mage), only 9 more to go!
We had a nuked spaghetti thing for tea - which tasted quite floury.
Finished the day watching Sue Perkins romping around Strasbourg, I do like a bit of old Sue, she makes me smile. 😊
Final Thoughts.
So deleted my FB a/c today, while I haven’t really used it for years it is a bit of a shame to have to leave it because off Zuckerberg making it a platform for the fascists. Hey ho there is a massively better quality of Peep right here in the Fediverse!
I have never enjoyed a SM platform as much as I have the Fediverse & all you wonderful folk!
Thank you to all those who are helping me on this journey, in a myriad different ways. I am thankful to each & every one of you! 🫂 🫶🐿️🖖
Dear Mark,
I hope this finds you well. I noticed something interesting today - it seems Instagram is blocking links to my little open-source project. You know, the one that lets people share photos without harvesting their personal data or forcing algorithmic feeds on them.
I have to admit, I'm flattered. Who would've thought a small team of volunteers could build something that would catch your attention? We're just trying to give people a choice in how they share their memories online. No VCs, no surveillance capitalism, just code and community.
Remember when Facebook started? It was about connecting people, not maximizing engagement metrics. Our project might be tiny compared to Instagram, but we're staying true to that original spirit of social media - giving people control over their online presence without turning them into products.
You could've ignored us. Instead, by blocking our links, you've given us the best endorsement we could ask for. You've confirmed what we've been saying all along - that big tech is more interested in protecting their walled gardens than fostering genuine innovation.
Every time you block a link to our platform, you remind people why we built it in the first place. Your action tells them there are alternatives worth exploring, ones that respect their privacy and agency. So thank you, Mark. You've turned our little project into a symbol of resistance against digital monopolies.
Yeah, and 1. Even in 2018 there was only like 25% more searches compared to the 2012 and 2025 peak of 100% more 2. TechCrunch covered #deletefacebook when that happened anyways 3. 2012 was “The Year Facebook Finally Tried to Make Some Money”. I don’t see what people mean by “not doing justice”, as TechCrunch seems to be covering how to delete Facebook when people want to delete Facebook.
Have you already deleted or are planning to delete your Threads/Instagram/Facebook/WhatsApp account in light of recent policy changes? (If you have or had one)
@Gargron yep back in 2018, the day Cambridge Analytica popup, without warning or regret from my friends, familly and followers, leaving just a final message on every account before #deletefacebook#deleteinstagram#deletewhatsapp
If you just joined the Fediverse
in search of a more inclusive community, welcome :heart_pride: :trans_heart: :blobcatheart:
While the Fediverse also has its challenges, it is a community constantly trying to improve for its people, and away from the danger of the monetization of hate.
Feel free to ask questions around! People will be happy to help. Hashtags are important here. If you have a question related to Mastodon for example, use #Mastodon
Be patient. Be you. Explore. Follow many to build a full feed (it is more important here because there is no algorithm).
I mean, if an EU citizen’s initiative to tax the rich cannot get a paltry 1 million signatures (less than one quarter of one percent of the population), I guess we really must deserve this bullshit system.
@aral
Yeah well, heard about this a week ago.
Left Facebook at #deletefacebook time (8y ago?). Left LinkedIn when the evil empire took over. Left twitter 1.5y ago.
Leaving #evilcorp is great and all, but "we" used to have a way to spread information, and the fediverse isn't working (yet).
Mark Zuckerberg says the individual work of most creators isn’t valuable enough for it to matter. First of all, FUCK you, Mark. Another billionaire thinks an artist's work, such as images/art, books, music, text, and other things, has no value. People can't even browse IG or FB without downloading your shity app. Why don't you allow everyone to scrap those IG/FB posts? This guy is a menace to society and doesn't care if someone will lose their livelihood so that he can have another 100 billion.
Mark Zuckerberg: creators and publishers ‘overestimate the value’ of their work for training AI / ‘If they demanded that we don’t use their content, then we just wouldn’t use their content.’ From https://www.theverge.com/2024/9/25/24254042/mark-zuckerberg-creators-value-ai-meta
Your wording shows that you‘re fully convinced that meta is some kind of deity.
Nope, just a company. I know that it has done some bad things. I just don’t think your strategy is effective.
We‘re not ignoring them, we‘re effectively boycotting them.
How can you effectively boycott something without social media? The Fediverse has ca. 2 million active users, Meta services have much more. If boycotting something means cutting yourself off from most of social media, nobody will notice and it won’t hurt Meta a bit. Its the #deletefacebook all over again.
