Some of my favourite moments on camera with the nordlys are not with the fjords or the forests, but just shooting directly up to the sky above us and marvelling at the formations and elegance of these aurora bands.
And in this instance, the moon itself makes a cameo appearance.
EN: Late evening view of a few trees. Not only are there a few houses gathered at the left edge of the picture, but red and green auroras are also dancing in the sky. A green aurora strip seems to split the picture into two parts, emphasising that there are no houses on the right side, but more trees.
New version of my time lapse of the northern lights above Göttingen on the evening of January 20, 2026 (one day after the major show). 74 individual images first reduced in size, then contrast enhanced and brightness reduced, then combined into an animation. 15-minute sequence.
I'm a bit embarrassed at myself because I just want to keep playing this over and over and relive those magic moments 😬
Photo from yesterday. Pictures from Monday's little Ragnarök rehearsal will take a while, though. Many of those are complex panoramas, some wider than 180°. Takes time that is currently demanded elsewhere.
Front of an old hut on a frozen field. Light trails from a street further away a visible due to long exposure. Above the night sky lit up by a warm coloured rainbow aurora: reds, violets and yellows are dominant.
Panoramas from last week's unreal #aurora event are finally done and will be posted here every #FotoMontag.
Starting with the tame ones, before the show really took off.
edit: wording.
Next bunch of Jan19 #aurora pictures for #FotoMontag: I would have gone home a happy bunny just getting images like the first one. The shock front of CMEs rarely causes the most visually stunning parts of a storm (especially down here in Central Europe). But then the sky cracked like an egg and became a silent concert of color and movement.
Next part of #aurora photos. Never thought I'd get to witness such a spectacle here. When the IPA (isolated proton aurora) visible in image 2 & 4 took off.... Wow. Words can't describe it. Images are in chronological order, panoramas of 8-12 images shot within 3-8 minutes beginning 21:30 UTC.
If you want to see a video of it: Someone near Stuttgart filmed that bright green burst visible in my last pic in real time: https://youtu.be/e19kAuC-6eU
Vordergrund: Im ruhigen Wasser liegen zwei Motorboote an Stegen angelegt.
Landed back in Evenes Airport just as the last hint of orange was fading to the south. And a massive aurora dancing across the scene. Chaos ensues on the tarmac.
Got to the car to find it iced over like a wedding cake. Was 90mins before we got home, got changed and headed out to shoot the aurora storm.
That was 5 hours ago. It's just wave after wave. Coronas. Ribbons. Green. Red. Purple sometimes. Mostly pretty gentle here in the north during these storms. Well, depending on what you're used to!
My wife and I are fortunate to be in Iceland at the moment, and we managed to capture a timelapse of last night’s aurora. It was one of those moments in my life when I could hardly believe my own eyes. Enjoy! #aurora#iceland#timelapse
We're currently experiencing a strong geomagnetic storm, which caused a stunning auroral display all over Europe last night. This time-lapse was captured by our colleague Stefan Ströbele over our headquarters in Garching near Munich.
I thought the Aurora was going to be a bust tonight, but right as I was getting ready to leave it turned into quite the show! Got these great pictures. Was 100% worth braving the 60mph gusts and freezing temps. I was up at crown point overlooking the Columbia river from the Oregon side. Pretty good for only a 30-minute drive outside of Portland. #aurora#auroraborealis
Went to the cabin by truck for the first time this year. The wind picked up and we narrowly avoided getting stuck.
But a very fast coronal mass ejection sparked a G4 solar storm which I think is waning now. We stepped out to very bright rare pink aurora. It also extended north of us, which is unusual. Here is an iPhone shot. #CabinLife#Nunavut#aurora#AuroraBorealis
A night photo of punk Aurora. The ice and landscape is tinged pink from the bright pink aurora that fills the sky.
I've been told by an aurora-watching friend that if current conditions hold, an aurora should be visible in Adelaide on the horizon approximately an hour after sunset tonight.
