elementary OS 8.1, based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, is now available with Secure Session as default, improved UI, AppCenter upgrades, and better privacy/security features. 🖥️
New ARM64 builds support Apple M-series and UEFI devices, while accessibility and system updates are significantly refined. 🔒
#freesoftwareadvent Day 22: #elementaryos !!! It's the first linux os I tried and it currently runs on my mom's laptop. They've just come out with Elementary OS 8.1 and it looks like it's a fairly substantial release. The dock and the accessibility features look like they're especially welcome. Shout out to those who made it possible to also run it on Arm. It's going on a spare Raspberry Pi 5 right now. I'll report back to let you know how it runs.
Everything you love, made even better. OS 8.1 improves the Secure Session and Dock, enhances accessibility, improves support for your devices, and addresses your feedback with over 1,100 issue reports fixed
In OS 8 we kept the Classic Session as default with the option to try a Secure Session. Since then we’ve released updates fixing issues, app developers have updated, and hardware makers have fixed issues in their drivers. The Secure Session now provides a better experience for most people and supports a broader range of modern hardware
In OS 8.1, the Secure Session is now the default session, with the option to fall back to the Classic Session if you still need it
I felt like making an Operating System User Flow chart. (Eventually they all end up with #Debian. Via #LinuxMint and #elementaryOS.)
This is an inaccurate simplification; feel free to be discontent.
Flow chart with a box labeled Windows leading to Linux Mint, and one labeled macOS leading to elementary OS; the two Linux distributions lead further to Debian.
The top section shows Jeremy Clarkson, with a text above him reading "WINDOWS 10 EOL" (End of Life) and the phrase "OH NO!" He has a concerned expression on his face. Various Windows-related logos surround the top part of the image. In the bottom section, Clarkson's expression shifts to a more neutral one, with a caption reading "ANYWAY." A wide array of Linux distribution logos, such as Fedora, Debian, Ubuntu, Mint, Tux (the Linux mascot), and others, surround him, symbolizing the multitude of alternative operating systems available after the end of support for Windows 10.
@elementary It would be very valuable if ElementaryOS incorporated a native clipboard. I come from environments like KDE, GNOME, and Linux Mint, where this feature is available through extensions, and it really makes a difference. In my case, I use it as a journal to post content to various social networks, and having a clipboard history greatly streamlines the workflow. Unfortunately, ElementaryOS doesn't currently offer this option. I hope the development team considers it. #ElementaryOS
So I did actually end up trying #elementaryOS and #Pantheon. I had it goin' on my laptop for a full day, which may not sound like a lot (because it isn't), but I have opinions.
First of all, the UX is very similar to Gnome. Even the Light and Dark themes are similar to their Adwaita counterparts. So I felt at home right away.
There's nothing cluttering up the desktop, either, which is a plus - just a Dock and a Panel, and the panel is transparent - so I can see my wallpaper! I can't abide a cluttered desktop, so this was also nice.
The built in wallpapers were pretty typical - pleasant, inoffensive abstracts and landscapes. Setting the wallpaper and importing new ones worked exactly like Gnome, so no issues there.
It has an option to automatically set the accent color based on the current wallpaper, which is also neat, although in application it was a bit hit or miss - one black and white wallpaper of mine got a red accent for some reason, along with other minor oddness. (Continued...)
In other news, I managed to convince my wife, my sister and brother -in-law to install #Linux in their machines due to the #windows 10 thing, instead of buying a computer (there's no money for that!).
Got #elementaryOS in one and #linuxmint in the other two. There were kinda blown away that both OSes were essentially the same, just different desktops.
I let them play around both in live USB before choosing.
Installations were according to their previous sensibilities in their favorites OSes.
Some things learned after handling a few #endof10 devices:
Yes, today's computers have become so much faster. Those old machines I'm refurbishing are, in fact, damn slow.
"Damn slow" is still fast enough to handle e-mail, use a browser for a typical news site or use productivity software such as LibreOffice.
It's a crying shame that Microsoft is degrading so many fine devices to e-waste that can easily be used with Linux.
"Damn slow" is way too slow for Youtube and online TV streaming. Who would've expected that ubiquitous online video and the lack of hardware support for modern codecs is actually what drives obsolescence?
Linux Mint Debian Edition runs on pretty much anything that can do amd64 with minimal amounts of RAM and yet it's fast.
Imho, LMDE6 isn't as welcoming to beginners as it could be. The default desktop theme looks very much like a Nerd toy and every new installation wants you to run a number of first-time-setup procedures that are puzzling and intimidating for someone who isn't into computing and just wants to use this machine.
I really miss Ubuntu's oemsetup option for Debian and LMDE. I'd prefer not to setup a default user for the devices we give away and would want the recipients to setup things as they prefer on their own.
When even LMDE is too slow, Chrome OS Flex is still fast enough on even lower-end devices. It's not FOSS, but for those who use Android on their phone, it's an easy way to rescue a donated laptop from the trash and put it to good use for a few more years.

The picture shows a screenshot of system monitoring app with a graphs of CPU load, memory usage, storage usage, network usage. The Intel GPU is not yet supported, so it is showing only a label with a detected model.
It‘s a long time I‘ve last installed and used a regular #Ubuntu (the version that now ships with #Gnome). I just installed version 25.04 - and I‘m impressed. Not only did they manage to make Gnome feel usable, it‘s also amazingly fast and snappy. And it supports fractional scaling very well (don‘t know why I ordered that Full HD 12,5“ screen laptop - many DEs just don‘t work using that resolution).
I have to add, that #Wayland fractional scaling feature on
@elementary works mainly due to the impressive work of @leolost. So in case you enjoy that feature as much as I do please consider supporting him on #GitHub
