Trump’s Concentration Camp Build-Out Includes Nearly $40 Billion for Warehouse Conversions “Germany’s concentration camps didn’t start as instruments of mass murder, and neither have ours,” wrote talk show host Thom Hartmann recently. “History isn’t whispering its warning: It’s shouting.” https://www.commondreams.org/news/list-of-ice-detention-centers
President Donald #Trump’s anti-#immigration agenda has supercharged opposition in cities where he has deployed federal agents to conduct raids, and communities in states including New York and Missouri are already working to block the next step the Department of Homeland Security plans to take in its push for mass #deportations: acquiring massive warehouses across the country to use as #immigrant detention centers.
This activity is coupled with mass #protests that have included rallies by tens of thousands and walkouts by high school students after federal goons murdered in cold blood two of these volunteer observers — #US citizens #ReneeGood and #AlexPretti. In response, the #Trump administration is trying to diffuse the growing resistance through cosmetic changes.
On February 4, White House “border czar” #TomHoman announced that the Dept. of Homeland Security (#DHS) would reduce by 700 the number of agents deployed to #Minnesota. State officials, #immigrant rights and community groups, and those involved in resisting the DHS “Operation Metro Surge” since early December reacted with skepticism.
A ‘Terrifying Line Is Being Crossed,’ Warns #Minneapolis Mayor as More ICE Horror Stories Emerge In an interview with the New York Times, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey described “marauding gangs of guys just walking down the street indiscriminately picking people up.” https://www.commondreams.org/news/mayor-jacob-frey-interview
According to a Saturday report in the #NYT, concern over #ICE’s brutality has grown to such an extent that many #Minnesota residents, including both documented immigrants and #US citizens, have started wearing passports around their necks to avoid being potentially targeted.
CNN on Friday reported that ICE has been rounding up #refugees living in Minnesota who were allowed to enter the US after undergoing “a rigorous, years-long vetting process,” and sending them to a facility in Texas where they are being prepared for #deportation.
Intensive care nurses immediately doubted the word of federal #immigration officers when they arrived at a #Minneapolis hospital with a #Mexican#immigrant who had broken bones in his face and skull.
#ICE agents initially claimed Alberto Castañeda Mondragón had tried to flee while handcuffed and “purposefully ran headfirst into a brick wall,” according to court documents filed by a lawyer seeking his release.
But staff members at Hennepin County Medical Center determined that could not possibly account for the fractures and bleeding throughout the 31-year-old’s brain, said three nurses familiar with the case.
The congresswoman did not cower behind the lectern. She instinctively lunged at her attacker with defiance and a raised fist. The shock from the assault notwithstanding, she quickly composed herself and continued her talk, brushing aside efforts by her staff and security who tried to persuade her to retreat.
“I’m built that way,” Omar said calmly as she left the community room at Urban League Twin Cities after her event, reminding a CNN reporter that she was a survivor of war.
Faced with such racist bullying, Omar showed the value of dignity and determination. All those resisting the #Trump-inspired anti-#immigrant terror can learn from her conduct. She stood tall and channeled her ire into her message.
The posts have referred to neo-#Nazi literature, ethnic cleansing and QAnon conspiracies, mused about deporting nearly a third of the #US population, and promoted lyrics from an anthem bellowed by the far-right militants of the Proud Boys.
Their authors are not on society’s fringe. They are in the offices of the White House and the departments of Homeland Security and Labor, using official government accounts.
We publish below the lyrics of a new song #BruceSpingsteen released on January 28, 2026. The Boss, as the singer is known, released “Streets of #Minneapolis” as part of a protest movement across the United States demanding an end to the terror unleashed by the Trump administration through its #ImmigrationAndCustomsEnforcement (#ICE) and #BorderPatrol thugs against undocumented immigrants and all working people.
We also publish an article first released by National Public Radio (NPR) News announcing the song’s debut.
#MINNEAPOLIS, #Minnesota, January 25, 2026 — Tens of thousands of protesters, as many as 50,000 by some estimates, marched through the streets of this city on January 23. It was a historic day of peaceful, often buoyant show of resistance against the federal govt's crackdown on #immigrant workers and efforts to intimidate anyone protesting this terroristic invasion across the state.
The promise of a calm Saturday disappeared shortly after 9 a.m. the next morning, January 24. That is when half a dozen #ImmigrationAndCustomsEnforcement (#ICE) and #BorderPatrol agents held down #AlexPretti and pumped 10 bullets into his body, killing him in cold blood.
Amid Funding Fight, #BernieSanders Says Unmask ICE, Repeal $75 Billion Giveaway, and More “ICE is out of control, ignoring the law and our Constitution. Congress must vote NO on any additional funding for DHS,” the senator argued as House progressives issued similar demands. https://www.commondreams.org/news/funding-for-dhs

The senator’s demands largely align with the reported demands of Senate Democrats, with whom he caucuses, as well as those of House progressives.
“Senate Democrats will not allow the current DHS funding bill to move forward,” the chamber’s minority leader, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), said in a Monday statement. “Senate Republicans have seen the same horrific footage that all Americans have watched of the blatant abuses of Americans by #ICE in Minnesota.”

Close-up video footage, obtained by Drop Site, shows one agent push a person to the ground and then deploy a chemical irritant twice on the 37-year-old Pretti, who had gone to help the person pushed. Around 8 agents then swarm and wrestle him to the ground. One of the officers then visibly unholstered his gun and fired multiple close-range gunshots at Pretti, a #Minnesota resident who was reportedly on the scene as an observer. There are 10 gunshots heard in all—at least five of them were fired at Pretti from a distance, while the person holding the camera shouts, “What the fuck did you just do?”
The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office said it had joined #Minnesota state officials in filing a federal lawsuit on Saturday night “seeking to prevent the destruction of evidence related to the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti.”
John Mitnick, who once was the head attorney at the #DHS in the first #Trump administration, criticized his former agency on Saturday night. “I am enraged and embarrassed by DHS’s lawlessness, fascism, and cruelty,” he wrote on social media.
Thousands of protesters shut down parts of #Minneapolis-St. Paul on Friday as hundreds of businesses closed their doors, and workers and students stayed home to demand an end to the sweeping #immigration crackdown that has roiled the #TwinCities for weeks.
The action on Friday, which unfolded in subzero temperatures, was the most widespread and organized demonstration since federal agents arrived more than six weeks ago. It was aimed at pressuring the federal government to pull thousands of its agents from the streets.

Federal #immigration agents have broken windows and dragged occupants out of their vehicles. They have forcefully tackled people to the ground. They have pushed and shoved protesters, and deployed pepper spray directly in their faces.
For weeks, residents have documented the scenes unfolding as federal agents pursue President #Trump’s immigration crackdown in Minnesota. The videos have circulated widely and intensified outrage and fear among many Minnesotans.
Marty Kurcias, 76, who was protesting at the airport on Friday, said the aggressive treatment he has seen of Minnesotans was jarring. “It can’t go on like this,” he said. “We don’t abide by cruelty or violence.”
There was the American citizen dragged out of his home in subzero weather in his underwear. And the detention of a 5-year-old boy wearing a Spider-Man backpack and a hat with floppy ears drew outrage from school officials.
But photos of a #BorderPatrol agent squirting pepper spray in the face of a man who was being pinned down by fellow officers on Wednesday searingly captured why the ongoing #immigration operation has been met with furious resistance on the streets of #Minneapolis.
“No one looking at this image can seriously claim this is about public safety,” said Mayor Jacob Frey.... “It should alarm every American because if it can happen here, it can happen anywhere.”
Two protesters have been blinded by so-called “less-lethal” munitions deployed by federal officers during an anti- #ICE#protest last week in Santa Ana, California, according to reports.
Widely seen video recorded at the Santa Ana protest showed a homeland security agent shoot Kaden Rummler, 21, in the face with a less-lethal munition at a distance of only a few feet. Doctors found glass shards and plastic fragments in his skull and a fragment of metal lodged just shy of his carotid artery.
BREAKING: CAIR Calls on ICE to Release Sami Hamdi, British Journalist Abducted Over Criticism of Israel’s Genocide
October 26, 2025
2:34 pm EDT
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called for the immediate release of British Muslim journalist and political commentator Sami Hamdi, who was detained at San Francisco International Airport this morning, apparently because of his criticism of Israel’s genocide in Gaza and at the urging of a notorious anti-Muslim, pro-Israel extremist.
