What do people think about Cell Sword? Is it worth doing a new version? I feel like it's got potential but I'm too close to the game to see the blind spots

I think I'm going to have to accept that "It's hemoglobbering time!" is not going to catch on as a catch phrase

Cell Sword, my comedy scifi shooter, is now available for the mostly harmless price of $8 on Steam and Itch. It's a love letter to Descent and I've tried to make it crazy and full of twists. Boosts appreciated!

24 hours until Cell Sword launches! Hmm, wait, I should be theming the announcements. Um, 24 hours until it injects... 24 hours until the doctor will see you... 24 hours until hemoglobbing ... hmm

Final production board for Cell Sword. Even the smallest games take a lot of planning. From this board 460+ tasks were generated (435 are closed) to get to v1.0.0

What I like about this is you can see visually even without text how by the end (the far right) the story beats, missions and monsters are all integrated at a high level

I use my Steam Deck regularly on long train rides, so I'm very aware of how games can impact its battery life🪫.
I looked into ways to improve the energy efficiency of games and wrote a list of helpful techniques (not just for the Steam Deck): https://www.artstation.com/blogs/haukethiessen/e1npn/developing-games-for-devices-with-batteries

@haukethiessen I was quite taken by your blog and have implemented an FPS selector in my game (Cell Sword). Thanks for the suggestion!

The option to run at, say, 30 fps is such a good idea.

Cell Sword hit release candidate today! As far as I can tell it is ready for release.

Last minute addition of a ping ability that sends out a cute little wobbly pulse and then highlights the nearest enemy

A player shoots at an nanobot that has merged with a virus. It is a collection of sharp angles but organic growths stick out of it. A pulse sweeps out from the player, wobbling the whole scene like being hit by waves of water and a marker appears on the robot indicating where it is.

The first game I ever sold was an ANSI art BBS game that you had to wait for the letters to print on the screen and now here I am years later delivering motion and light and drama. It feels good.

Always a good sign when I find myself stopping work to enjoy the ambience of the game.

Anyway, I'm pretty active on mastodon, follow for updates on a bunch of stuff if you like indie games, old scifi and the occasional gay angst.
