System requirements for a Matrix server?

Unless I am blind or my search-fu is hugely failing me, I cannot for the life of me find any information on the recommended/minimum specs to self-host the matrix backend services. I'm trying to spin up a VM just to play around with it and see if I like it. Specifically, I'm looking at Synapse or Continuwuity. Any advice? ...

The user experience for matrix is absolutely dog shit. Anyone who says otherwise is huffing copium.

I have been setting up matrix servers and testing every desktop and mobile client. I cannot present this to my discord group as an alternative.

I don’t understand the matrix hype. It has never worked for me. Every server is just perma loading / syncing. It’s so slow.

It’s not that they forget. It’s that 98% of its user base won’t care. They will just do whatever and continue on.

Too many companies have invested in discord being their point of contact.

It’s the same as windows 11 killing windows 10. Everyone just moved on.

Yes, you will have a few niche users quit, same as the few who moved from windows to Linux. But not any significant numbers to make any of these companies worry.

No. You can install docker directly in Windows. OP is running a Linux VM and then docker inside of that.

Gaming on Linux and NTFS do not mix. You will run into lots of errors and crashes. For steam games, you can use the backup/restore function to copy games over from the NTFS drive to a non NTFS drive.

Also I highly recommend not using AI at all for questions. It has about a 95% error rate. It will give you incorrect or hallucinated information.

You are better off going to Linux discords and forums and chatting with humans that have experience.

I’ve never used the first option. I was meaning the second one. That’s how I moved my files over. When restoring it, steam automatically downloads the required files for Linux.
