Ohh it reminds me of the Aliens vs Predator game, that was so sweet :)

Only problem I ever had with Linux was having too many different versions of the Nvidia driver installed, so it would take lots of storage. It was easy to fix.

Hope they get this to run in total war because I simply can't play any of that due to the terrible AI.

Thank you Microsoft, for the final push

I've been dual-booting Linux and Windows for a while, with Windows as the fall-back option in case I wanted to use Office for something. Now that they tried to trick me into paying a subscription for their AI slop machine, I'm finally, fully out. It was a pain to actually track down and back-up the stuff that was held for ransom ...

I've actually never even had office, just libreoffice

Someone accidentally left five minutes of plot in the Star Trek Section 31 "movie"

I had very low hopes for this, and it was orders of magnitude worse. I guess there's some device that becomes relevant for the climactic scene, but who cares? I don't even know who the audience is for this, because anyone into Star Trek isn't gong to see much here to work with, and anyone not will be put off by the branding.

xilliah ,
@xilliah@beehaw.org avatar

I'm actually impressed they somehow managed to make star trek movies even worse. I'm not even sure anymore what it has to do with star trek, like the IP is basically dead if it weren't for SNW.

Should I be concerned that my HDD, which seems to be working fine, is 8 years old?

It appears to work fine (it contains my home partition for my main machine I daily drive) and I haven't noticed signs of failure. Not noticeably slow either. I used to boot Windows off of it once upon a time which was incredibly slow to start up, but I haven't noticed slowness since using it for my home partition for my personal ...

@xilliah@beehaw.org avatar

Do you only count active years as service life? I have one I hadn't used for years and luckily it still worked just fine and had no data loss after a couple of years, but I am not sure if I should count those years towards the max 7. Also it's a NAS drive, not the standard stuff.

xilliah ,
@xilliah@beehaw.org avatar

Do you raid? I just have one rn and am wondering if I could get a 2nd one and put it in raid without accidentally wiping the current one. I guess that would mitigate any failures

xilliah ,
@xilliah@beehaw.org avatar

Hmm. Yeah I'm thinking of keeping my operation lean and simple, with an online copy. One issue I've noticed is that sometimes files just get corrupted. Perhaps due to a radiation event? A parity drive could solve that, but I want something simpler. I'm thinking just a tar with hash and then store multiple copies. What do you think?

xilliah ,
@xilliah@beehaw.org avatar

Where do you store the checksums? Is it for every file? I thought of just making a tar for each year and then storing it next to it, and storing a copy off-site.

xilliah ,
@xilliah@beehaw.org avatar

Neat

xilliah ,
@xilliah@beehaw.org avatar

They renamed it from Clippy?

xilliah ,
@xilliah@beehaw.org avatar

I wonder if reparations will ever be called for down the line, since it's a conscious choice and not due to necessity.

Didn't Lenovo have some privacy issues, like a key logger or sum iirc? Kinda a vague memory but I remember that's why I didn't buy one.

xilliah ,

I'm skeptical of this making a difference due to this act that was passed in the Netherlands, which allows for sending data to foreign parties without any oversight: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018_Dutch_Intelligence_and_Security_Services_Act_referendum

xilliah ,
@xilliah@beehaw.org avatar

It doomscrolls for me?

xilliah ,
@xilliah@beehaw.org avatar

What's holding it back is not having a button to filter out all the US drama. Eternity had it, but that app isn't working anymore.

xilliah ,
@xilliah@beehaw.org avatar

Hmm so use it in the browser? Lemmy has a pretty terrible web UI, like forgetting where it was when I press back.

xilliah ,
@xilliah@beehaw.org avatar

I've just looked at Jerboa, Voyager and Raccoon and none of those have content filtering.

xilliah ,
@xilliah@beehaw.org avatar

It does? It hasn't had an update in 5 months and that's how long it has been broken I'd say. I guess the f Droid version is out of date then. Thx!

Ahhh. Yah the playstore version hasn't been updated in 5 months either.

I'll try that!

The pitch is nice but it sounds like someone is doing a voice rather than a natural voice.

This playlist might help you, iirc it also covers the mistake you're making https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLVBTgX4F61IfiDkeZ-B9i1tlfNLMdYCui

The best is to go to a speech therapist. I've also heard it rumoured that you can hurt yourself if you do it on your own. Luckily where I'm from it's covered and I'd rather wait a year than take any risks, beyond it just slowly going up unconsciously. I just think suddenly trying to change your voice without incremental steps might be unsafe.

xilliah , (edited )
@xilliah@beehaw.org avatar

Well a lot of trans people have a bit of an unnatural quality to their voice, but it isn't really a problem I'd say. But with yours it honestly is quite strong and so I'd say focus on recognizing what it is and then seeing if you can practice getting that out. Iirc she covers that in one of the first videos. There's various things you can do wrong, like falsetto, cartoon etc

I've always wanted to visit a factory. I've been in an airbus factory and that was nice, there were Tibetan monks there too. But it wasn't like a factory factory.

God, I have so many of these annoying catchy lines in my head. If I can't access anything I'll just use that Goldberg website to get some classics to read.

Was watching a movie on Netflix with a friend a while back and it didn't even support subtitles for her...

xilliah ,
@xilliah@beehaw.org avatar

Haven't seen an ad in over a decade, except by accident, which is jolting. The stuff in my head is from the 90s...

xilliah ,
@xilliah@beehaw.org avatar

Back then ads were quite nice tbh, like they'd actually put effort into it to make it catchy and funny or beautiful. And TV was worth watching. Like the discovery channel was amazing.

xilliah ,
@xilliah@beehaw.org avatar

Yea those are still the best. I like watching Arte sometimes or other public channels because there's no ads.

AFAIK they're made from forcefields and photons, not matter and tractor beams. Or are tractor beams forcefields?
