In a world full of bad news, here are some :

To improve gender equality, Denmark has completed an initiative to identify 100 historic women for whom statues will be made, to create a better balance between the genders of the statues in Denmark.

On the list is our historically important Queen Margrethe I, former Prime Minister Helle Thorning, Author Tove Ditlevsen, Author Karen Blixen, Film Producer Lise Nørgaard, and many, many others.

Hvorfor har vi egentlig byttet om på ordene "arbejdsgiver" og "arbejdstager"?

@randahl@mastodon.social avatar randahl , to random

How do I say this in English:

In Danish we use the term "en nærliggende tanke" (a nearby thought) to describe that an idea would easily come to mind in a given a situation.

For instance, if a tribe was using drag sleds to move heavy items, and they saw a round shape rolling down a hill, it could be "a nearby thought" to combine round wheels and a drag sled to create a cart.

Is there a similar term in English?

wolf ,
@wolf@helvede.net avatar

@randahl I tend to use terms such as an "obvious thought," a "natural thought," or in stronger cases an "epiphany moment."

My was a hike through the Vejle River Valley near Tørskind, returning over Runkenbjerg.

It is such a wonderful landscape, and the weather today was ideal for photography.

On the way I met a homeowner who told me the old houses out here were reasonably priced. "Who wouldn't want to live next to these views?", I thought. But then I recalled that it is half an hour drive from the Danish highway system, which is probably why it is not for everyone.

But one can dream… ♥️

Language question:

In Danish, when I want the audience to form a mental image of something, I can say "Forestil dig at" which translates to "Place this mental image in front of you".

Similarly in English, I have noticed the use of "Imagine that…", as in "Imagine that an old man walks in the door". But I really dislike the use of the word "imagine", because it sounds like what I am describing is pure fantasy.

Could I instead say "picture that…" or is there an even better phrase?

According to Sergeant Jonathan Estridge, under the Trump regime, the US military now launches an investigation against him, because he does not support Israel's genocide in Gaza.

You read that right. Under the Trump regime, not wanting to kill civilians just because they are Muslim, is now considered suspicious.

@randahl The strong support of Israel from the US stems from the evangelical belief that once the temple of Jerusalem is rebuilt, the rapture will begin and American Christians will go to heaven. With that in mind, working against Israeli supremacy is interpreted as preventing the will of God in some circles.

Today, it is 7 years since the Parliament of Denmark introduced the dress code law in 2018 — a law which punishes citizens for wearing clothes the state does not approve.

It was introduced to persecute Muslim women wearing religious clothing, but surveillance fanatics saw the benefit of also banning clothes that would prevent security cameras from identifying you in public.

To me, letting the state dictate people's clothing reeks of authoritarianism, and I dream of the day we repeal this law.

wolf ,
@wolf@helvede.net avatar

@randahl The law was indeed targeted directly at Muslim women, but I don't quite follow your comment on security fanatics' desire to ban clothing.

I take it that by "security fanatics," you mean people who will stop at nothing to monitor anyone.

Because in my field, "security fanatics" are folks who go to great lengths to prevent such things.

wolf ,
@wolf@helvede.net avatar

@randahl I'm not sure what I'd call them, but saying they are "security-oriented" is like saying tthat homophobes are "family-oriented."

I'd rather say such politicians are surveillance and monitoring fanatics like in the Eastern Europe back then.

And right as I came by the railstation, I saw citizens demonstrating that Israel has bombed Gaza to kingdom come, in a bombing raid which has killed 50,000 Palestinians, because the Hamas regime has committed attrocities against Israel.

Will we never learn?
