So it looks like Larry Ellison's going to be pulling the puppet strings at CNN, not just CBS "News" -- another domino falling in the right-wing extremists' war on honest journalism.

Neither of those outlets has been remotely perfect in the past. But they're heading toward Fox Lite status now.

There should be a word for it: the feeling of disappointment / sadness when you realize interesting people you got to know on the Fediverse have since decamped to Bluesky.

Of course, there must be valid reasons for it. Still, this makes me a little sad.

I have a dormant Bluesky account and from time to time I check in and see them posting so much there.

@_elena I have a Bluesky account just to see what's up, hardly use it. Last weekend I decided to post a video from the Hands Off march in San Jose I shot and it ended up being marked as SPAM by the official moderators. So yeah, its not trustworthy..

The article has some useful context about Musk's career, notably what a sleazeball he has always been in his business and public dealings. It also points up the way governments have refused to do their regulatory jobs – and, less explicitly, how journalism has been a lapdog along the way.

But as it accurately points out Musk's desperate efforts to slow or reverse the well-deserved slide at Tesla, it doesn't get into the truly scary stuff. Namely, Musk won't give a damn about Tesla or its shareholders if his coup (per the first piece in this newsletter) succeeds. If he can divert U.S. government spending even more (see: SpaceX) into his bank accounts, Tesla will be an afterthought. Like most Democrats, I’m trained to believe that you always vote for [continuing resolutions]. Government shutdowns are a stupid idea. It’s the radical Republicans who want to shut down the government.

But this is a bizarre situation in which the president of the United States and this billionaire are already shutting down the government.

So if I’m a Democrat in Congress, why do I vote for a continuing resolution to fund programs that are not continuing? It really is just a blank check.

It’s like giving Trump and Musk a trillion dollars and saying, Spend it as you like…

Mac keeps making it harder and harder for developers to just make apps/games and share them outside their store. This is incredibly damaging for anyone creating software. https://9to5mac.com/2024/08/09/macos-sequoia-permission-prompts/

Previously, it was possible to control-click to grant permission for a non-notarized Mac app to run, but Sequoia removes this option, and Apple has confirmed this is intentional. In macOS Sequoia, users will no longer be able to Control-click to override Gatekeeper when opening software that isn’t signed correctly or notarized. They’ll need to visit System Settings > Privacy & Security to review security information for software before allowing it to run.

The coolest part about having a completely financialized global economy is that rich people can pretty much cause a global recession just by selling off their stocks whenever they're unhappy about something, or want to produce a specific reaction... like say a certain result in the US election.
