As Bridget Phillipson seeks to increase testing in schools (again) with a new reading test for 13 year olds, as a way of combatting the problems in literacy among school children, which is clearly a serious issue, I'm reminded of the phrase:

'You don't fatten a pig by weighing it'

What is needed is more investment in schools & staff to enhance the environment in which children learn & to help them discover the joy of learning... more testing just sucks the joy out or education!

rachel ,
@rachel@norfolk.social avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 @urlyman honestly, phrases like โ€œready to take on the unions in a battleโ€ฆโ€ kinda tells me everything I need to know about her understanding of the people who used to vote for her

@FediTips@social.growyourown.services avatar FediTips , to random

Each server on the Fediverse is totally independent, and sets its own rules for acceptable behaviour. You can find out more in the guide at:

โžก๏ธ https://fedi.tips/who-sets-the-rules-on-the-fediverse-how-do-i-find-out-what-the-rules-are-on-my-server

Usually server owners decide rules because they pay the server's costs and (in some places) may be legally responsible for its content. However, some admins decide rules jointly with their members, and some are run as full co-ops.

Whatever system is used, there is no central authority imposing rules on servers from the outside.

rachel ,
@rachel@norfolk.social avatar

@FediTips I think it is worth saying that, for a server to participate effectively across the fediverse and not be โ€œshunnedโ€ by its peers, it has to abide generally by the social norms often seen on other servers.
Itโ€™s not a requirement, but it does help.

rachel ,
@rachel@norfolk.social avatar

@FediTips Iโ€™m not going to pretend I donโ€™t have some unusual rules - including, if you must swear, then swear. Donโ€™t obfuscate it with a*********s

I just witnessed a generational divide occurring. The scene: a very young cashier is handed a wireless DECT phone by an older colleague.The GenZ looks panicked. He tries tapping the glowing display. It does nothing. He accidentally discovers that the buttons depress, and have a function. He dials. He places the phone near his chin, face up. He talks into it. He is perturbed to discover that the replying voice can only be heard by placing his ear to the phone.

He hands the phone back in disgust.
