Open source culture developed an allergy to gatekeeping that made sense when the risk was excluding talented people. It makes less sense when the risk is thousands of LLM-generated PRs that change variable names to slightly worse variable names.

@Daojoan “before the libertarian-leaning contingent of Hacker News has a collective aneurysm” but would that be so bad?

"The real threat posed by generative AI is not that it will eliminate work on a mass scale, rendering human labour obsolete. It is that, left unchecked, it will continue to transform work in ways that deepen precarity, intensify surveillance, and widen existing inequalities."

"The current trajectory of generative AI reflects the priorities of firms seeking to lower costs, discipline workers, and consolidate profits — not any drive to enhance human flourishing. If we allow this trajectory to go unchallenged, we should not be surprised when the gains from technological innovation accrue to the few, while the burdens fall upon the many."

@tante “Rather than inducing mass unemployment, the more immediate effects of generative AI are likely to mirror broader trends of job transformation already unfolding today, namely de-skilling and surveillance.”

please tell me now if AI investments are going to dry out as money has started to dry out of the markets due to tariffs and other economic conditions. or are tech bros going to double down now? what do you think?

puercomal ,
@puercomal@sfba.social avatar

@nixCraft double down on selling, but reduce investment in making. http://monkeynoodle.org/2024/06/23/software-bubbles/ Microsoft already reduced their commits, Apple slipping roadmap… but smaller shops that have projects in flight are going to finish and launch those projects if they can.

    By any metric, we're the most documented civilization ever. Future historians should have an unprecedented window into our daily lives, thoughts, and experiences.

    Right?

    Right??

    I have a lot of trauma from my childhood that I still don’t talk about much. But here goes.

    When I was a kid we had a Beta Max instead of a VCR.
