Early 2000s: Don't EVER give personal info online, only shady websites ask you for credit card information to register
Now: GIMME GIMME GIMME ALL THE INFO

phantomwise OP ,

you mean THE DAMNED MOUNTAINS are the hands of the clock and not the hand-shaped thingies ? 😭 😂 😭

phantomwise OP ,

I've also been using zsh until now, it's clear it's a massive improvement over bash. No more accidentally pasting code into the terminal!

I wasn't even looking for a new interactive shell, zsh is fine, I was looking for a new language for shell scripts because I'm tired of bash's legacy quirks... but the interactive nushell was too cool to resist!

phantomwise OP ,

That's interesting I hadn't thought about the JSON angle! Do you mean that you can actually use jq on regular command outputs like ls -l?

Oil is an interesting project and the backward compatibility with bash is very neat! I don't see myself using it though, since it's syntax is very close to bash on purpose I'd probably get oil syntax and bash syntax all mixed up in my head and forget which is which... So I went with nushell because it doesn't look anything like bash.
If you know python what do you think about xonsh? I

phantomwise OP ,

Yeah if you need to work on machines with bash it makes sense to stick with it. Sorry you have to work on Windows... how is powershell compared to bash?

I don't know python but xonsh seems really cool, especially since like nushell it works on both linux and windows so you don't have to bother about OS specific syntax

phantomwise OP ,

I feel my sanity slowly slipping away while reading...

phantomwise OP ,

I don't really mind having a non-POSIX shell since it doesn't prevent bash scripts from working, but I get that if you want portability bash is still best since it'll work mostly anywhere.

phantomwise OP ,

Oh I didn't know powershell did that too! It sure beats endless parsing errors

phantomwise ,

Nice of them to protect their (users') content from AI scrapping. So that they can charge AI companies for it instead.

phantomwise ,

Nah I don't miss having to deal with region zones, they are such a pain... sure you can rip the disk, but you're still left with a disk you bought yet can't use because your players are deliberately sabotaged to not work.

I don't miss using physical media either, they take up so much space... I'd need a mansion if I wanted to replace the content of my media server with physical media.

phantomwise ,

Now I want that movie

Why is land/sky so cleanly split between mammals/birds?

Like, I'm aware of there being exceptions like Penguins, Ostriches, and Bats. But in general, why is there such a distinct land/air split between mammals and birds? Why don't mammals share the ground with ecosystems of plant- and meat-eating walking birds? Why didn't we get birds that evolved to slither like snakes, or tunnel ...

phantomwise ,

I guess that depends on your definition of what a bird is and on where you place the transition between bird-like dinosaurs and birds. Like Archaeopteryx is one of the species in that weird kinda dinosaur kinda bird phase.

Edit: Genus not species, sorry. I hate taxonomy so much...

phantomwise ,

At the same time, it was also not mammals that ruled the ground, it was, as many an eight year-old can attest, dinosaurs.

Arthropods who've been ruling the world for 500 million years: Why do dinosaurs get all the hype? 😭 😭 😭

phantomwise ,

I don't either, but if no one ever tries github projects with zero stars how are they supposed to get stars?

That why linux is great, it open-sources its drama so everyone can enjoy it

That I'm not contractually obligated to smile at people. And that I should tell men asking me to smile to fuck off.

phantomwise ,

Cats. Bless the internet for cat videos.

Also computers, but they make me want to die almost as often, so let's just say cats.

phantomwise ,

It's always nice to hear about family being supportive, it makes me regain some hope for humanity

phantomwise ,

Yep...

phantomwise ,

Chopped lettuce

Really? LETTUCE? As if we needed more proof that birds aren't real

phantomwise ,

surely you jest, birds aren't real

phantomwise ,
  • You also have to wait 30 seconds to a minute for all the useless javascript to load and get in the way of you trying to find what you are looking for.
  • Then you'll have to dodge an AI chatbot and various buttons for AI features trying to trick you into clicking them.
phantomwise ,

I gave up on noscript years ago when more and more websites would break unless I allowed dozens of different domains for each, it became too much of a pain to manage. What's the point if you're forced to allow it for the page to load anyway? But it has been years, so maybe noscript has evolved to compensate for that?

phantomwise ,

I tried silicone nipple pads but they feel weird against the skin so I switched to masking tape. Does the job just fine and guaranteed not to fall off!

phantomwise ,

That's still shockingly high...

phantomwise ,

It looks more like Microsoft's usual incompetence than a conspiracy against LibreOffice...

phantomwise ,

Whichever will be more efficient at not doing the specific thing I'm trying to do

phantomwise ,

of course not, the average person is lazy and uses tldr

phantomwise ,

From my experience most people just don't know that it CAN be changed. They assume that there's nothing to do about it, or that if there is you need to be a tech wizard to understand how. They know that they don't understand how their computer/browser/phone/whatever works so they assume that even if there was a way it would be too complicated for them to even try. They don't care to understand how it works, and that's fine. I also don't care how my microwave works as long as it does work when I need it to. There's not enough time or mental energy to learn everything. But when you show them that all it takes is going to a website, typing "ublock" in the search bar and clicking a big button, then it goes from "probably rocket science" to "hey I could actually do this!".

phantomwise ,

What's France doing in red? That's like the ONE invasion for which people had no complaints 😂 More nazi punching and less overthrow of democratic governments, please.

phantomwise ,

notice how literally no american ever talks about the U.S. civil war with “the North invaded the South”

"War of Northern Aggression" anyone?

phantomwise ,

I had no idea people past my grandmother's generation still felt compelled to make their bed... I thought we had collectively grown past the compulsion to do pointless tasks like this, along with other wastes of time like manually wiping the dishes or ironing everything including the dish cloth. Maybe that's just me, though.

(I'm not talking about doing it if you want to because you like it, only about the expectation that you should be doing it no matter what.)

What is a good adhd hack for those cases during which you want to do a million things but are paralyzed and can't?

I have so many things I want to do but just can't. Play a video game, read a book, take dog for walk, build a gadget I bought parts for, finish writing a song, finish building a computer... But no, I just sit there stuck. How do I get unstuck?

phantomwise ,

Tried it, not a great success... The only result is making me not want whatever was chosen anymore.

  • Movie A or movie B?
  • I can't decide... I want to watch both...
  • Lets flip a coin.
  • The coin says movie A.
  • I don't want movie A anymore. Movie B it is then.
  • Wait maybe the coin is using reverse psychology on me... I should pick movie C that wasn't in the list just to be safe.

My brain has this awful tendency of going "I could have done it a minute ago but now that someone else told me to I can't anymore"

phantomwise ,

No it's really that the result feels like a decision imposed on me and my brain can't deal with that... It's the same if I start to do something I want, then someone calls to tell me to do it and now I can't do it anymore. Not sure if it's PDA or something else, but it's really annoying, especially in combination with AuDHD.

phantomwise ,

Nice suggestions, thanks!

Challenges usually get the opposite reaction than demands for me, I can't even count all the stuff I've done because of it. Maybe self (not-)imposed challenges would work? I'll need to give it a try. Though challenges also have their problems, like picking the most stupid or pointless ideas because I was advised not to do it. I think there's a correlation between how stupid and pointless an idea is and how quickly my brain latches onto in 😅

phantomwise ,

If you look at old silent movies, they were played at different speeds in different cinemas and projections. There wasn't a standard way to play a movie, no "you NEED to play the movie at this specific speed or it will be ruined". I'm not saying the same should apply to modern movies, but I find it interesting.

phantomwise ,

Or when it's bothering you that it's 256 and not 255... aren't we counting 0 anymore? :/

phantomwise ,

Yep very weird, should have been 255.

phantomwise ,

Fair point 😄

phantomwise ,

Your money is already going going to assholes who don't need to do shit because they just happen to own the company you work at. Why be mad if that money was spread around to people who actually need it instead of just going to a few billionaires? You hate people you consider "lazy" enough that you think they should starve and that it's not worth helping anyone else if it means helping ONE "lazy" person?

phantomwise ,

That argument always gives me vibes of "but I've had to go through corporeal punishment when I was a kid, it's not fair that children now should have it easier".

"Things were bad for me and I still made it, I don't want it to be easier for other people or it makes all I've gone through feel worthless"

phantomwise ,

1 is my goal, though I think I might have reached 2 once. Because shitty ADSL 😭

My very grateful thanks to people who can afford to do more.

phantomwise ,

Just a regular Tuesday...

phantomwise ,

The day to celebrate will be when the rest of the world gets independence from America

phantomwise ,

I'm very concerned that people who choose to go to France will just find themselves in the exact same situation along with the rest of us not too long from now. I'd advise looking for a country with a lower fascism approval rating...

We do have lots of cheese, though, if it's any consolation.

phantomwise ,

Please don't, we're cooked in France too. Just a bit more slowly.

phantomwise ,

Finally managed to enable VSCode extensions without doing it imperatively or using home manager I'm so happy I could cry 😭 😭 😭

It actually wasn't even that bad, I'm just terrible at understanding documentation I guess
