This article reads like it was written entirely by AI, and I'm willing to bet the "Promt Author" won't deny this either given their promotion of AI. Its not just the em dashes, there's a particular AI vernacular that's becoming more and more obvious.

I don't disagree with the idea that we need to prepare our future generations for the rapidly changing world of technologies etc, but like most others in the comments, I'm sceptical about embracing these technologies without careful consideration for what it means for generational knowledge and human intelligence in general.

This is the best news I've heard all week

More just making the point that there's much worse things in the news currently and that this is pretty inconsequential.

System requirements for a Matrix server?

Unless I am blind or my search-fu is hugely failing me, I cannot for the life of me find any information on the recommended/minimum specs to self-host the matrix backend services. I'm trying to spin up a VM just to play around with it and see if I like it. Specifically, I'm looking at Synapse or Continuwuity. Any advice? ...

Yeah, true. But I saw people mentioning XMPP in the comments and thought the link might be helpful for some. It's not like it's wildly unrelated to the topic.. I stand by it.

Same. I moved from FM to Posteo (which is very cheap) AND Tuta. I use both email services for different uses. Tuta for more personal stuff like banking, medical, official gvt stuff like tax, vehicle registration etc. anything that requires my full identity. Then Posteo and Addy.io together for everything else. I never use my main posteo email address, I create aliases for everything. Am three services is only slightly more expensive than FM in total, but I feel it's a much more secure setup

I've baked into the settings for chat gpt to NOT compliment our praise me for anything. It'll still tell me I'm correct if I ask, but I rarely ask, because if you have to ask....

You can't give it custom instructions in the personalisation settings.

Mine are:

Use an encouraging tone. Avoid praise. Take a forward-thinking view. Tell it like it is; don't sugar-coat responses. Use quick and clever humor when appropriate. Swearing is caring.

I just halted a job interview process - due to self respect.

I don't usually have sufficient motivation to post much on any social media platform. This is rare for me. Under communism, what incentive is there to pursue highly dangerous or specialized fields?

Under capitalism, a lot of the time, highly dangerous jobs are also highly paid. Kind of a balance that the individual decides to engage with. Same idea behind getting an advanced degree in STEM or law. I think of my job by example, I'm a power plant operator at a large combined cycle plant. No fucking shot I'd be doing this if ...

pfr ,
@pfr@piefed.social avatar

Very basically: communism is not “everyone gets paid the same” and it is not “no hierarchy ever.” You can still have inequality in income, status, or lifestyle. The core difference is where that inequality comes from.

Under communism, the means of production are collectively owned, so no one gets rich purely by owning things other people have to use to survive. You do not get passive power over others just because your parents did well or you happened to own capital first.

The baseline is that no one is excluded from basic human needs, food, housing, healthcare, education, safety. That removes the permanent underclass capitalism reliably produces. From there, differences in pay or quality of life can exist based on contribution, skill, responsibility, or scarcity, but they are not allowed to snowball into dynastic wealth and structural domination.

So yes, different jobs can lead to different standards of living. That alone is not capitalism. Capitalism specifically requires private ownership of productive assets and wage dependence. If everyone has equal access to opportunity and no one can hoard power across generations, you do not end up with the same class system we have now.

The honest answer is also the boring one: real-world implementations vary, some badly, and no system guarantees fairness automatically. Communism is about reducing structural exploitation, not pretending humans stop being human.

People saying “everyone will just do awful jobs out of pure love” are overselling it and hurting the argument. Incentives still exist. The difference is that survival is not used as the incentive.

TLDR: Capitalism uses deprivation as motivation. Communism tries to remove deprivation first, then argue about incentives afterward. Whether that succeeds is the real debate.

While I agree that copilot is AI slop garbage, this article is kinda rage baiting... Like, who gives a fuck if they redesign the UI... It's what they do every few years. This isn't about copilot replacing edge. It's not even about microslop adding more AI to the browser (although they probably will). This is specifically about a new design language. Take the AI out of the equation and the redesign isn't all that controversial.

I started my self hosting journey a bit over a year ago. Now I host and maintain multiple services for me and my family. 1000% absolutely could not have set it all up without ChatGPT. Just no way.

Thing is, I'm not a computer beginner. I'd confidently say I'm a moderately advanced computer user with a decent understanding of Linux/BSD and POSIX shell. I used ChatGPT to learn how to set things up gradually. Yes, things did break a couple of times and I spent a few late nights fixing them, but I never ran commands that I knew were irreversible until I fully understood what they did. This cautiousness comes with experience.

So, unlike many, I do encourage the use of ChatGPT for assisting with computer related projects, just know your abilities and don't trust the robot unconditionally.

pfr ,
@pfr@piefed.social avatar

I did both 🙏

pfr ,
@pfr@piefed.social avatar

Totally agree. The docs don't talk back and can't clarify specifics or uncertainty. I always read the docs first (probably should have noted that in my first comment), but often I'd have specific questions or concerns regarding unintended affects on other services on my sever etc.

I'd never JUST run with AI to set something up. But it's like having someone sit with you who knows what they're doing, but dont know anything about your existing setup. So asking questions while also explaining my current setup, and pasting in and errors or warnings, is what made it useful for me.

I know some people think you should just learn from docs alone. That's fine. My anecdotal comment was only highlighting how I was finally able to do something outside my knowledge and skillset because I had specific contextual help from AI.
