One of them is the increased number of people caring for mental status, but the other one is, we are living in an era that requires long hours of computer usage which is against the living way of an ADHD person. We need to walk, go out, spend energy, but nowadays we have to stay in an office, look at a screen, which is so ...
I think a bit part of it is that it's simply become harder to live with ADHD and for it to stay under the radar in your life. Rare is the person who can survive in the modern world purely on their wits. It demands that you persevere at jobs, careers and relationships over long timespans, and against an onslaught of things which have been relentlessly developed and refined over generations with the express purpose of hijacking your dopamine system and interfering with your free will.
Not sure if this goes here or if this post will be hated upon? but i want to host ai like llms and comfyuis newer models locally but im not sure what type of setup or parts would work best on a possible slim budget? im not sure either if now is the time with inflation and such. ...
I'm running a couple of smaller chat models on my mid-range new-ish laptop and they're fairly quick. Try out Jan with something like their jan-nano model on whatever you've already got and get a feel for what you can do.
Honest to gods, this conversation happened today, and it may have cost me a job opportunity. The customer was super impressed with my menu design and animation, and wanted to know who we got it from. When I said I did it, their face lit up! Too bad as soon as i said GIMP, they weren't interested anymore. Has anyone else ...
Picture of post from my Bluesky of a convo between me and a customer... {Convo between me and a customer today: "neat menu, i really like it." "thanks, I made it." -me "Really? How?" "I used Gim... and an online program, Canva to animate it." "Im sorry, Gim?" "Umm, GIMP. It stand for GNU Image Manip..." "GIMP?? Like the suit?" "No, not like the suit." why, gimp dev!? }
Things have changed in more recent versions of GIMP. Pasting layers is simple now and you can even drag and drop them between images. You can also now use any filter nondestructively, even which Photoshop can't do.
Strange times when a government contract gets cancelled because the government themselves are hopelessly corrupt, rather than it getting cancelled because the company is atrocious.
Books themselves aren’t going anywhere, or so I keep telling myself and fervently hoping despite all the evidence humanity’s collective brains are dissolving into a stew of slop and influence.
you can expect 0-2% output from a panel in the winter time
I can confirm this. My family is off-grid and there have been extended periods the last two winters when it has simply been too dark for too long to depend on the solar without installing 50x more panels.
Also, the problem with having larger battery capacity to span these periods is that if they don't get fully recharged or cycled properly the batteries get damaged and eventually die. We learnt that the hard way.
Solar is the undisputed champion for 80-90% of the year but needs to be complemented with something else for the remainder, if you want uninterrupted on-demand electricity.

The idea of the UK not having a 'sovereign' nuclear deterrent is based on supply chain stuff.
There's nothing stopping us launching all our nukes if we wanted to, it's just that we'd have to order some bits in from outside of the country to replenish the missiles used to carry the warheads (which are made here). That's if any of the suppliers were still alive after we'd started nuclear Armageddon...

Check out the YUNOhost repos. If everything you need is there (or equivalents thereof), you could start using that. After running the installation script you can do everything graphically via a web UI. Mine runs for months at a time with no intervention whatsoever. To be on the safe side I make a backup before I update or make any changes, and if there is a problem just restore with a couple of clicks via my hosting control panel.
I got into it because it's designed for noobs but I think it would be great for anyone who just want to relax. Highly recommend.
I love being on Debian, everything just working and not living in fear of updates. And any software that I must have the latest version of I just install via flatpak, appimage, distrobox etc.

A GUI would be great. I wonder if something like Faircamp could be used as a backend to essentially make a simple static website which can be viewed offline with a browser. With a template it's just a case of dropping files into a folder.
The impact on kids is bigger but as adults we are also not immune. I suspect that a significant number of parents are putting their kids in front of a screen so they can use a screen themselves.
I think that as we indulge more and more in high dopamine-stimumating things like screens, processed foods and drugs of various kinds, and as those things get more and more potent, it gets harder and harder to find the motivation and competence to maintain what they replace, like good relationships and community. This a compounding and self-reinforcing problem because the worse life gets, the more attractive these things become as an escape, and the more you escape the more the rest of your life gets worse.
Its the classic downward spiral of addiction. On a massive scale.

The nuclear warheads are actually made in Berkshire. The 'delivery systems' i.e missiles they are mounted on and the surrounding tech often comes from the states and gets sent back there for refurbishment and testing every few years.
The UK could do a lot of damage with what it already has in stock before needing to get more. I agree that the US should be cut out of all important supply chains though.
This is a good question and I'll be interested to see what others have to say. One thing I've noticed is that memories can transform into 'memories of memories'. What I remember is not the felt impression of something but what I subsequently told or showed myself about it. And it doesn't even just apply to childhood - I have same thing for big events in my life from last couple of years.
I do find that it's possible to consciously dig deeper and unearth forgotten memories though.
I'll also add that I think what constitutes a sense of 'self' is more than just memory.
I’m on board that we need to become independent from big tech. As someone who is fond of the Mac user experience, from choosing hardware to how you navigate through apps, I need a guide to make the switch, so if you know of any great guides for Mac users, I’d greatly appreciate it! ...
The quality of their hardware is very high and reminds me of macbook pros that I've had in the past. They test their laptops on Ubuntu, so if you choose to have that preinstalled you know that everything will just work. I've run Debian and Fedora on mine and both have been fine too. The other good things in my book are that they use Coreboot which is an open source bios and their customer support is excellent.
Your shadowy plots are the most shadowy that the world has ever known. It's never been seen before. One could say that they are unprecedented. Historic even.
Definitely! There are some really powerful plugins coming out for the 3.x series now too and there's even more great stuff to look forward to in the 3.2 release due out soon. Good times indeed 🤩
I haven't gone too deep with Krita yet but I did try out some digital painting in it a few months ago and the brushes and brush dynamics were really nice to use.
FWIW .psd support in GIMP is getting pretty good. Not sure what your use case is but it might be worth checking out if you haven't used it for a while.
Just to put it out there: There are some excellent options for a linux-native photography stack which also work on windows and mac if you're interested in trying those out before switching. Darktable and Rawtherapee are both excellent raw developers and Digikam for library management and light editing. You should find that you can pass files between each for a seamless workflow. If you did switch to Linux you would also get Geeqie which is blazing fast for inspecting, culling and rating raw files and is also interoperable with the above apps.
A really good resource for FOSS and Linux photography is pixls.us
No probs :)
You will love Geeqie then! Learn (or set) the basic shortcuts and a progressive marking/rating workflow and you'll be flying. I used to absolutely hate culling but now it's my favourite part of the process!
If there is a third world war I think either everyone will lose in one day (nuclear weapons), or it will be sabotage and 'special military operations' everywhere for decades, and not named as a world war until later.
