Just how it’s uncool to post AI-generated images or text, especially without disclosing that you did up front, it is super uncool to publish an AI-generated app—again— especially without disclosing it up front.

I don’t care if it “works.” I don’t care if people “can’t tell.” I think it’s irresponsible and deceptive. And if you don’t want to admit that you used AI to generate an app, then you know that people would react poorly to that information, which makes it pretty obviously uncool.

nileane ,
@nileane@nileane.fr avatar

@stroughtonsmith @louie asking what is the point of a disclosure label just because it is widespread makes little sense.

to use your metaphor, I don't think anyone that's sensible would argue that there’s no point in having no nutrition labels since junk food is so widespread

I am in disbelief that the only argument I'm seeing mobilized against age verification laws (and their accompanying social media bans) is “It sucks for privacy!”, and not “why the fuck are we okay imposing a digital jail on every single child?”

Digital privacy matters and it's an important reason why these laws must be repealed at all costs, but let's also please humanize the issue here: social media bans for minors are just another massive chapter in the conservative's playbook to deprive any social class that's not ‘adult white males’ of their bodily and existential autonomy.

That same playbook has chapters we're already familiar with, including staples such as “let's force gay kids back into the closet”, “trans kids shouldn’t be able to decide anything for themselves”, “women shouldn't have a bank account”, and “abortion should be illegal”.

nileane OP ,
@nileane@nileane.fr avatar

And as usual, think of who this is going to affect the most. Spoiler alert: it ain't gonna be the cis white boys, it ain't gonna be the neurotypical children, and it ain't gonna be the rich kids.

Pretty sure we have words to describe that phenomenon where a society is dominated by policies that are designed to exclude and discriminate against its weakest classes of individuals.

Apple Faces French Investigation Over Opt-In Siri Voice Recordings

Some guy even blogged about it at the time: https://daringfireball.net/2019/08/apple_siri_privacy

I know I get agitated by this often but man, when a post of mine gets boosted and it leaves my timeline, I really do get a bunch of the dumbest replies from people who do not follow me and lack context.

When I post an Apple complaint on my timeline, I’m directing it toward people who explicitly opted-in to hear what I have to say. But when people reply to my post, they’re directing their complaint toward me, someone who did not subscribe, and I do not care about it.

There is now a firmly documented pattern of Israel ordering civilians in Gaza to evacuate into "safe" zones, then directly bombarding those same zones in the following days.

This is a full-on pattern of ethnic cleansing, and methodically executed genocide.

To the Apple fans fixated on defending Tim Cook, who have been clogging my replies on Mastodon and Bluesky over the past few days following my story on @macstories (https://www.macstories.net/stories/are-pride-wallpapers-and-a-watch-band-enough-in-2025/). Here is my response to you:

In 2014, Brendan Eich, creator of the JavaScript language and now CEO of Brave Software, was appointed as CEO of Mozilla. I will quote his Wikipedia page for you (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brendan_Eich#Appointment_to_CEO_and_resignation), and you will very quickly understand why:

> The appointment triggered widespread criticism due to Eich's past political donations – specifically, a 2008 donation of $1,000 to California Proposition 8, which called for the banning of same-sex marriage in California, and donations in the amount of $2,100 to Proposition 8 supporter Tom McClintock between 2008 and 2010.

The news of Eich's donations led to major protests inside the company and among Mozilla's supporters, volunteers, and users. Most notably, half of Mozilla's board stepped down. Which ultimately led to him resigning, just 11 days later:

> After 11 days as CEO, Eich resigned on April 3, 2014, and left Mozilla after public outrage. In his personal blog, he posted, "under the present circumstances, I cannot be an effective leader".

I would argue that Tim Cook's donation is an even worse offense than Eich's. Cook made his $1M donation to President Trump's inauguration fund while it had already been public knowledge for years that he would immediately start his mandate by rolling back LGBT rights in devastating ways.

I think it would be more than fair to call for his resignation for the same reason that it was fair to call for Eich's resignation back in 2014. And yet, it seems that a majority of people are choosing to dismiss Cook's donation and subsequent stance regarding Trump's administration as either necessary, pardonable, or irrelevant.

In today's mastodon.social update, we're testing a few minor quality of life improvements to the web interface: Every list of accounts now has a shortcut to add or remove an account from lists; clicking a hashtag in a post now brings up a menu with a shortcut to browse posts in that hashtag specifically by the author, and a new featured tab on profiles to make featured hashtags and posts easier to find and navigate.

nileane ,
@nileane@nileane.fr avatar

@Gargron I like it!

However I think demoting pinned posts to the featured tab on profiles kinda takes away from their main purpose? Usually pinned posts are posts that you'd want to be the first thing other users see when visiting your profile.

The fact that the featured tab is not active by default somewhat goes against that.

What do you think?
