Crypto hoarders dump tokens as shares tumble
Several companies are selling crypto stockpiles in effort to fund share buybacks, shore up stock prices.

Serious question! Our apartment complex's pool is heated, but it's still pretty cold when you get out of the pool. I was contemplating buying bathrobes with the hope that we'd use the pool more, but Kev says that might make us look like swingers. Is that true?

mousey ,
@mousey@seattlematrix.org avatar

@Alice I've used bathrobes after being in pools for decades, and nobody's ever invited me to any swinger parties. =(

I call bull.

Here's a small tip for Unix and Linux developers and IT pros: Want to run the same command again at the terminal? In most modern shells (tcsh, zsh, bash), you can simply type "!!".

For example, say you forget to use sudo:
yum upgrade -y
pkg upgrade -y

Instead of typing the whole command again, just do this:
sudo !!

This is a lifesaver for longer commands. Give it a try!

Bluesky is melting down and Mastodon will not (I believe) benefit from it, and one reason why is that the one single technical advantage Bluesky has over Mastodon— the ability to migrate instances without consequence— turns out to be an absolute showstopper.

ALT
mousey ,
@mousey@seattlematrix.org avatar

@fleeky @mcc @pthenq1

Is that meaningful? Comparing migrating from bsky->bsky with fedi->fedi isn't exactly apples and apples is it?

Migrating from a centralized service to a.. uh.. the same centralized service? That's a lot less complexity than migrating from one decentralized fedi service to another, isn't it?

Especially since you might not even be migrating to another mastodon instance, what if Friendica is more your thing, or Misskey/pleroma/akkoma or whatever?

Doesn't seem like irony.

@kittylyst@mastodon.social avatar kittylyst , to random

Looks like there may well be a surge of users from Blacksky and the other "alternative" ATProto instances checking out the Fedi, or reactivating old accounts, given that they're now discovering that ATProto is a Potemkin Village of decentralization and that BSky still hold all the cards.

This time, can we please try not to act like assholes / the HOA while they find their feet.

mousey ,
@mousey@seattlematrix.org avatar

@kittylyst As a brown person on ,

Thanks for coming back, if you are. Block and Defederate liberally.

Safe(er) networks can be crated in fedi. They're more work, because there's no central control.

Well, be your OWN central control.

YES, it's more work, but you get to keep all the benefits yourself. and Billionaires can be kicked out, instead of taking over what you might have thought was an otherwise safe space.

I, for one, salute , and hope to contribute more to it.

This is random, but, if it's about linux phones, yeah,

@postmarketOS , or @mobian or @linmob would be your radars for "are linux phones Daily Driver-able yet".

If you're really (or just) looking for de-googling/apple-ifying, check out @murena (the phones, not necessarily the services). It's @e_mydata under the hood, and you can Just Buy™ them.

My most sincerest apologies if you know all this already. I just really resonate with wanting out of the mobile duopoly.

Poll: Did you use Google Reader?

mousey ,
@mousey@seattlematrix.org avatar

@mcc I (whoever I'm supposed to be) use 's RSS reader (News app), because I hate (the idea (and practice) of) having a discrete, per device/platform app for it. There's no good way to ensure I have all the same feeds between apps.

If I have all my feeds in one (locally-hosted) place, whatever I pick up to read things (the news app on my phone(s) or any web browser), is a single source for all my feeds.

It doesn't have to be Nextcloud, but is for me. 🤷

My position on ATProto, as a protocol, is that the Good Part is the PDS¹. Everything good about ATProto comes from the PDS. It's the "everything else" that is the source of the problems — centralization, high barriers to entry, tendency to monopoly, some of the censorship. Unfortunately, most of the system is "everything else".

¹ "Personal data server". The repo of posts that Bluesky scrapes to form feeds.

@mcc @roohafzaluvr @moira Fair. But I don't like cryptocurrencies because I, on the other hand, haven't found any good uses for hash-based ledgers that aren't as well served by RDBMS? You could fill several universes with the things I don't know though.

Yyyyeah, the whole blockhash thing is a real turn off. I can see why it's never really taken off with people who aren't interested in blockhashes.

I hear u, but the distinct lack of math puzzles and extra carbon footprint, the sheer (relative) simplicity of ActivityPub over more xPU intensive methods of networking.. seem more natural to me*, and way easier to explain to non-technical people.

Nothing brings out more school spirit than an entire Psych 210 class hunting down a Nazi.

Context: dude barged in to a Psych 210 class on Udub campus throwing up Nazi salutes and screaming "heil Hitler" and calling the entire class "degenerate filth" and "faggots". Psych 210 class does not play. Nazi is hunted down, taunted, and arrested.

@moira @mcc This. Explaining that the fediverse is Billionaire-proof, because when they show up trying to colonize the network, the Fediversal community can simply kick them out without affecting the greater community. There's even degrees to which they can be ostracized.

This makes the lightbulb appear in people's eyes when I'm explaining the Fediverse to people just hearing about it, but that lock those commercial solos have on people's brains just seems so insurmountable. 😞

Passive agressive little shit at cafe is talking some smack. It would seem that I'm "typing too loud"

Ok, it's chilly and my keyboard (laptop chicklet) is cold and stiff ... but that doesn't matter ... I'm stopping by a computer store where a friend works and I'm borrowing a full mechanical keyboard and I'm putting that in the freezer over night.

We'll see what he's got to say about that tomorrow.
