Going from: "I wanted the computer to do this well-defined task, and it did it, and saved me some time because I can verify that what it did is aligned with my intent, and correct."
Going to: "I asked the computer random stuff and I'm 'obeying' without knowing why or how the output came about. I don't care much about understanding my own will anymore as long as the software says 'AI' on the label."
UPDATE with correction: As far as I can tell, the major newsletter publishing platforms (except WordPress) obfuscate outbound links inside their own URLs if you're reading the newsletter in your email. So you have no idea where a click will take you until you click.
This behavior doesn't happen in web versions of newsletters. So click on the "View in browser" link to read newsletter on the web.
This may be good business for the platforms, but it's non-transparent, anti-user behavior.
there are many others that include all sorts of safety checking.
One, that I can't seem to find any more, even renders the target URL remotely and shows a screenshot so nothing leads back to you when you're checking.
I mostly use #Phanpy, and keep #Tusky around for notifications and link sharing. I don't do a lot of searching, but do like to link to relevant posts, so I'll definitely check out #Pachli when I get home.
@FediTips I have tried #Pachli and do like it. The search feature that
@nikclayton called out were a nice improvement.
Although I will still keep using #Phanpy as my primary Fediverse client, I ... was about to say that Pachli will replace #Tusky, but it turns out that composing in Pachli is nearly impossible because the compose dialog is entirely underneath the keyboard and not visible, making it very difficult to compose posts and responses like this!
@FediTips I just discovered it today in my Doctor's waiting room, and
@nikclaytonis the developer, but yes, I agree that an actual bug report on GitHub is probably a good idea.
There are lots of ways to search for things on Mastodon. It's not just hashtags any more!
You can now search for ordinary words and phrases, and there are special extra options for narrowing down your results by dates, languages, accounts etc.
Lots more info about how to search on Mastodon at:
@FediTips how do I search for things I bookmarked myself? That used to be trivial before the new search features, now I can't find things I bookmarked, which is kind of the point of bookmarks.
