Welcome Newcomers and Returnees🤦‍♂️

You are welcome to use this platform however you want within the rules. Period.

The only rules are spelled out on your instance's /about page.

You don't have to use hashtags, or CWs or ALT text, but they're there if you want to.

This is just a platform. It doesn't have a protocol style guide, although some people may feel inclined to tell you what to do. If they get annoying, simply block them. Blocking is just another tool to help you tailor your experience.

We appreciate that certain politicians have recently admitted their naivete in entrusting the voices of their governments to corporate / for-profit social media.

To these politicians, we say: https://joinmastodon.org/hosting

mastodonmigration ,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@Mastodon

One thing that politicians should really consider is creating their own instance to give them complete control of their messaging and build their public image.

Think about the benefit that Trump has gained from Truth Social.

By posting things on their own social media site they can draw interest from the media to their posts in a way that is superior to just riding other platforms.

To Users With Dormant Mastodon Accounts 🙋‍♂️

Come on back. Please give Mastodon another try.

Maybe you created an account a couple years ago, but you found the technology too clunky, people too bossy, or engagement too limited.

It's changed. Solid technology, 500 character posts, Edits and Quote-Posts. With your help we can build a powerful truly decentralized public social media counterweight to centralized corporate media.

[Please share on Bluesky]

We are not just passengers. By using a platform you are contributing to that platform's power and influence. At this point there is real reason to question to what purpose corporate Bluesky's influence will be channeled. Will your voices be marginalized? Will your work be censored? Conversely, if you move here, you'll be contributing to building a powerful truly decentralized public social media. You will be part of the counterweight to corporate media.

For Newcomers To Mastodon - You Don't Need An App

One of the really great things about Mastodon is it runs perfectly well in a web browser both on a computer and mobile device.

That's right! No need to download any app. No Play Store or Apple Store.

Just go to https://joinmastodon.org/, pick a server and get going.

Some people like the apps, and there are plenty of good apps, but many users, maybe most, simply use a web browser. Highly recommend Firefox, DDG, or Vivaldi.

I have never met a medium as polite as Mastodon. Sure, even here I have a met impolite people, but only very rarely.

In comment sections of news media, and on Facebook and elsewhere, I have been verbally abused for years for presenting political views, and I have experienced so many death threats, I stopped counting.

But not on Mastodon.

That is my review and you can quote me on that @Gargron .

mastodonmigration ,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

@randahl @Gargron

Well said Randahl. Feel like this is due to the platform's roots as a safe space for marginalized people. While it has evolved from there, it has a foundation of inclusivity and kindness which continues to be spread through a loose set of community standards. When folks show up with negativity and bad attitudes they generally receive a cold reception, so it doesn't spread.

Whatever the reasons. It is mostly a nice place, and that is very special, particularly now.

If you have a few minutes this Sunday check out this video about some guy who follows Bernie Sanders around deep red West Virginia.

https://youtu.be/RP8Oxe6OxJc?si=pxfepGpaUf8GVVXz

You don't have to be a Bernie fan to connect with the basic thesis that these desperately poor rural areas are being sold a bill of goods by MAGA, and are natural prospects for progressive people focused anti-corporate policies.

Now, if only Dems could break free of their current corporate centrism we might get somewhere.

mastodonmigration OP ,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

In the piece he quotes Chuck Shumer's infamous centrist shifting strategy from 2016:

https://youtu.be/ClytGvP_Qe4?feature=shared&t=43

"That for every, this is the second point, for every blue-collar Democrat we will lose in Western PA, we will pick up two three uh moderate Republicans in the suburbs of Philadelphia, and you can repeat that in Ohio and Illinois and Wisconsin"

Shumer is wrong. This strategy has got to change. Democrats can not be Republican lights. They need to be Democrats.

mastodonmigration OP ,
@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

And more from Thomas Frank on Democrats' disasterous strategy of turning their backs on their historically core constituency, the working class:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xPCMhwyHy0

"One of the reasons they did that is because they thought that the working-class had nowhere else to go. This is an expression we use in American politic, meaning they can't go over to the other side. Guess what happened?"

Giving credit for being decentralized because of , when Blacksky only currently has about 2000 users out of 34 million, seems a bit generous. But heck, it's a start, right?

Good mention of the Bluesky TOS changes, but feel like it would more accurate to say AT Protocol is potentially decentralizable, rather than currently decentralized, until mass credible exit is actually a reality.

I would like to give an update on "federation" on Bluesky.

My expectation was it was unlikely we'd ever see this happen because "federation" on ATProto means basically reproducing the entirety of the Bluesky software stack. In old Big Data terms, on ActivityPub your instance is a "horizontal shard" of the network; ATProto forces full DB replicas only.

Still, we're seeing movement on this front, which I'd split into two categories:
