Hi! Name's Aster. I am an aspiring geologist, do stuff with PostMarketOS, and pretend I have any understanding of the Linux kernel. I also like Halo and Kingdom Hearts. Apparently I mainly work on porting iPhones to Linux now.

I wonder how many more useless features and random advertising crap (including AI) Mozilla needs to add to Firefox before Linux distros start realizing that maybe Mozilla isn't their friend and Firefox isn't the best option.

The only issue is, this would mean going to use Firefox forks since servo isn't ready yet, and all that would cause is some random browser turf war where everybody wants their fork to be chosen.

justsoup OP ,
@justsoup@mstdn.social avatar

@pojntfx I honestly don't see Servo being ready before Firefox is just as bad as Chrome, even with more funding.

justsoup OP ,
@justsoup@mstdn.social avatar

@pojntfx I honestly agree. I would say to use Chromium, but that's still very close to Chrome. Vivaldi is another option, but it is proprietary (the actual Vivaldi parts at least), so that cannot be used by default. To me, working OOTB is more important than ideology or personal opinions. What am I going to say to somebody who wants to use their browser like on literally any other OS but can't?

justsoup OP ,
@justsoup@mstdn.social avatar

@pojntfx Wait, that's actually a great idea. Just have a distro / desktop default one but allow users to select other options as alternatives.

justsoup OP ,
@justsoup@mstdn.social avatar

@pojntfx That would be cool, but I would worry about the pain of migrating to a new browser engine.

justsoup OP ,
@justsoup@mstdn.social avatar

@pojntfx Well, iOS cheats and has everything actually just be safari with a skin lol. What is DMA by the way?

justsoup OP ,
@justsoup@mstdn.social avatar

@pojntfx Oh, you learn something new every day.

I love licensing my personal things as (A)GPL because the people that complain about that choice make for a great blocklist

justsoup ,
@justsoup@mstdn.social avatar

@pojntfx I usually avoid the EUPL because it allows relicensing to a few weaker copyleft licenses. Also if you incorporate GPL code you have to relicense the whole program GPL, so the point of the EUPL is null.

justsoup ,
@justsoup@mstdn.social avatar

@pojntfx Oh, for that kind of thing I usually used the MPL. (I've kinda been on a "GPL-3.0-or-later for everything" kick recently, but that's irrelevant lol)

Does anybody have any recommendations on books that go over accessibility in software, specifically operating systems? I've been wanting to make postmarketOS more accessible but I only have a surface-level understanding of what is needed. I'm sure there's lots of small details that would be missed and would make accessible implementations next to useless due to missing them.

tl;dr good books on accessibility in operating systems?

Bring back clear casings on electronics. I wanna see what's going on inside without tearing it apart

@justsoup@mstdn.social avatar justsoup , to random

I went hiking this weekend for the first time in a while! It was nice to leave my electronics behind. Sure, I was worried that pmOS would implode while I was gone (anxiety gonna anxiety), but it was amazing for my mental health.

I am super tired though. Slept 13 hours when I got home lmao

I'm curious. Send me your dream phone to run postmarketOS on. Can be a super cool, high-end phone or some weird early 2000s phone with two screens and a keyboard. Get creative!

@justsoup@mstdn.social avatar justsoup , to random

This took annoyingly long to setup and it is already past my bed-time, but here y'all are.

There was a small regression in the framebuffer, but that can be fixed pretty easily.

All the modern code was done by @riscv64 . I just did the postmarketOS integration. Give 'em a follow!

(Ignore the bad camera quality. This is the best camera I have, ironically enough.)

I miss Atom. What a gorgeous thing it was to extend your editor in that way

justsoup ,
@justsoup@mstdn.social avatar

@pojntfx There's https://github.com/pulsar-edit/pulsar, a fork of the source of Atom. I switched to it after Atom died. Still gets updates and everything!

Announcing MUD. MUD is an attempt to create an entirely new desktop based on philosophies from Lomiri, targeting mobile form factors only. The goal is to be as generic to Unix-likes as possible, only requiring wayland support and minimizing Linux-isms. Another major goal is to keep the project as simple and modular as possible to prevent feature creep and make dev easier.

More information is coming soon...

Servo is considering:

  • allowing some AI tools for non-code contributions

  • allowing maintainers to use GitHub Copilot for some code contributions over the next 12 months

These changes are planned to take effect in June 2025, but we want your feedback. More details:

https://github.com/servo/servo/discussions/36379

justsoup ,
@justsoup@mstdn.social avatar

@servo Not only is this a bad decision on moral grounds, it is also a bad decision legally. You cannot verify the license of the "generated" code, and therefore you cannot include it without opening yourself up to legal disputes. As a group going against major players in the market that would gladly see you gone, it probably isn't a good idea to leave such a major hole in your project.

(Note: I am not a lawyer.)

Cult of the Lamb is such a fun game. Little town builder that then turns into a hack-and-slash rogue-like to continue town building? Yes please. "Please, glorious leader, murder me 🥺", sure! But first gotta make a fun fish stew and pet this little guy mining stone for me. Seriously, game of the year, every year.

Also, they keep releasing content updates that could be entire DLCs for free! The only "DLCs" are new skins for your cultists and a few cosmetic stuff for your cult town thingy. Yay! :3

It's on.

Special Thanks to @riscv64 for doing the work to make this possible. I just got it booting with pmOS.

Red Hat is working on a new scheme to replace the GRUB bootloader with a fast, secure, Linux-based, user-space solution: nmbl (for no more boot loader). You can just use kernel to boot https://pretalx.com/devconf-cz-2024/talk/W3AVCT/

justsoup ,

@nixCraft To me this honestly sounds like re-reinventing the wheel so I personally won't use it, but I wish the best for the project! Always cool to see something low-level like this pop up, especially with such grand goals!

ChatGPT and other tools are generally horrible for privacy.
At the same time, they are being used by over a billion people due to their productivity benefits. From that perspective, AI is inevitable, so the real question becomes: Is it possible to build AI in a -first way?

Here's a look at how it could be done: https://proton.me/blog/how-to-build-privacy-first-ai

justsoup ,
@justsoup@mstdn.social avatar

@protonprivacy Please don't add "AI". That would be the last straw to end my subscription.

So my Pixel 3a's install decided to brick itself today... any cool ROMs to try out that support AMOLED mode?
I was also considering mobile Linux, though I do really depend on Discord notifications due to my university; unsure how well that would work...

justsoup ,
@justsoup@mstdn.social avatar

@allpurposemat

I used the Discord flatpak on postmarketOS and notifications worked as long as Discord was running. I don't know how well other Mobile Linux distros would work though.
