Feeling so great about my recent Wikipedia donation now.

Though I can't imagine a scenario where the entirety of wiki isn't already in all of these models.

Ananta looks promising, mostly in how they clone GTA and every other major sandbox out there. The theme is cute at least. That's a complex engine to pull off, and the physics look a bit wonky, maybe it can be good?

I remember when overclocking was fun, and using an entire household 15amp circuit breaker just to run a bunch of peltier elements was cool. Literally.

I assume my phone has more processing power than this 2011 beast ever did.

An array of 24v peltiers and thermal couples mounted to large aluminum water blocks.
Hacking power regulators and gluing copper waterblocks and neoprene to your motherboard was a good time.
More voltage hacking and silicone because ice cold water makes condensation.

That reminds me, it has been so long since I've done anything remotely interesting with electronics that wasn't just repair. Or car related.

You had to go through some effort to play StarFox 2 back in the day.

I guess I can't think of anything these days that requires the effort.

Do the Germans have a word for the loss of respect achieved when the larger spouse refuses to open a stuck jar for the smaller, weaker spouse because it will hurt the larger spousal fingies?

What's the oldest piece of machinery that you own that still works, for its original purpose, in (mostly!) its original state?

janusfox ,
@janusfox@animal.business avatar

@NanoRaptor A pair of needle nose vice grips I found on the side of the road in the 80s as a kid.

And the Atari 800XL I had from the same time period.

As someone who has spent a lot of time with peltier thermocouples, this is so incredibly /cool/. I guess this thin-film thing is efficient enough to compare to phase change systems? That sounds too good to be true but would be game changing if it can be done cheaply. No need for a compressor, but still pumps and blowers.

So Windows 10 will stop bothering me with updates soon? The company will stop developing crap for it and forcing it on me? It will just work without nagging, ads, and interruption?

Security issues aside, this is a dream come true.

Hello, if you care about Servo, the alternative web browser engine that was originally slated to be the next gen Firefox but now is a donation-supported project under the Linux Foundation, you should know Servo announced a plan to as of June start allowing Servo code to be written by "Github Copilot":

https://floss.social/@servo/114296977894869359

There's a thoughtful post about this by the author of the former policy, which until now banned this:

@mcc THIS! So much this, I just experienced this same issue yesterday. It creates /nasty/ hidden bugs.

What I love about cryptocurrency is that someday, the base cryptography will be broken. Probably with qubits.

The value of everything will be wiped out in a moment.

Building a market, not on the scarcity of a resource, but instead on the expense of computation is madness.

Computers were literally invented to break crypto.

Apparently Connecticut is putting CR boxes in all their schools to filter the air? That's amazing news! Now I can't truthfully say not a single government in the world is doing that anymore, so good on CT

Hopefully more will follow their wise example. Air filtration in schools costs pennies per student per year and generates lifetime savings for societies on the order of millions of dollars

janusfox ,
@janusfox@animal.business avatar

@eniko I'm so happy to hear that. With all these new viruses and climate change making pollen way worse, everyone should be upgrading their air filtration systems.

We have got to stop normalizing allowing disease to spread in public.

Some autistic people find making phone calls extremely stressful and unpleasant and will avoid them at all costs.

Please don’t try and force your communication preferences on others.

I hate it when I'll state a preference and then someone will drop "let's have a call" as though they're playing some magical trump card.

People treat "call" like some obviously superior, adult, proper way to do something.

Every 30 minute call can be a 5 minute text exchange.

And somehow, I'm the weird one for wanting to do things precisely and concisely.

Satya Nadella says Windows PCs will have a photographic memory feature called Recall that will remember and understand everything you do on your computer by taking constant screenshots. This is a great reason to ditch windows altogether. Switch to 🧑‍💻 They don’t care about your privacy or safety anymore and not hiding it either.
