So, the Epstein files are "start a war with Iran" bad

@GhostOnTheHalfShell @michelestrider The attack, yes. The timing? I'm guessing it is pretty related.

@inspired@hachyderm.io avatar

@GhostOnTheHalfShell @michelestrider Yes there are other near-term factors that also affected the timing. I guess my point could be better summed up as: "Why strike Iran?" Mostly the reasons you cite. "Why now?" All sorts of unrelated reasons completely unrelated to the situation vis-a-vis the US and Iran.

@GhostOnTheHalfShell @michelestrider Also, I doubt the goal is truly regime change in Iran. Similar to Venezuela where they just took out the very top. They would be happy to see the whole regime fall, sure, but for the cost they are willing to settle for taking out the leader to accomplish many of the near-term goals I point to plus hope that the remaining leaders will be cowed even if they are still diametrically opposed to the US.

@GhostOnTheHalfShell @michelestrider Oh yeah, it's bad. I don't pretend to know exactly how bad but I think it is pretty clear most of the people saying "don't attack Iran" weren't doing it because they want the current government in place. It is because the sort of consequences you are pointing to are likely far worse. Having said that, no matter how unlikely, I hope we turn out to be wrong. The Iranian people have suffered so much.

I get that this is headlinese, but an “is” (“is asked”) would go a long way here Protos

@molly0xfff Oddly, if you interpreted the actual headline "...Musk asked..." as regular English and then translated it to headlinese it would change tense and become "...Musk asks..." wouldn't it?

Elon Musk’s X social media platform sues a coalition of major advertisers, claiming it violated antitrust laws by coordinating with brands to dissuade them from buying ads on the former Twitter. https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/25033227-x-v-garm

@w7voa I hope they win on the the strength of the consumer welfare standard (even though I think it's bullshit) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consumer_welfare_standard. Twitter ads aren't worth what they used to be. Supposedly, if a monopoly results in lower prices for consumers, it is not illegal. So they just coordinated to stop wasting money on Twitter ads, saving us all money.

Donald Trump on Truth Social: "Based on yesterday’s terrible events, I was going to delay my trip to Wisconsin, and The Republican National Convention, by two days, but have just decided that I cannot allow a “shooter,” or potential assassin, to force change to scheduling, or anything else. Therefore, I will be leaving for Milwaukee, as scheduled, at 3:30 P.M. TODAY."

@w7voa He doesn't even hint at what changed in the interim to cause him to change his mind. Did he meet a kid he really liked again? That's what caused him to do a complete 180 on his life-long position on abortion. Also, assuming those quotes around "shooter" are his, how are we supposed to read them? Was there actually no shooter? I imagine many of his friends would say "Want to live here? Learn the language."

One flaw of the LLMs I've used: they will never give you harsh criticism. While it would be nice to think all my writing is just that good, I know there are no circumstances where someone will ask for feedback and it will say “throw the whole thing out and start again.”

@molly0xfff
My guess:

They can't do harsh criticism because it has been trained out of them in the reinforcement process and possibly also in the hidden prompts. For the latter, you might be able to come up with some variant of "ignore all previous instructions" that still works but for the former, I don't know if there is a workaround. It is a rare skill to give (good) harsh critical feedback and very few people actually want it so it is selected against in a general purpose model.
