How can companies trust AI agents to handle business operations, including major financial decisions? Researchers have developed three benchmarks that measure when AI agents are safe enough to run businesses. https://spectrum.ieee.org/ai-agent-benchmarks?utm_source=mastodon&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=fedica-Mastodon-Daily-Pipeline

Researchers have developed a contactless method that analyzes a combination of patients’ heart rate data and facial expressions to estimate the pain they’re feeling. No more “on a scale of 1 to 10”. https://spectrum.ieee.org/machine-learning-measure-pain-surgery?utm_source=mastodon&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=fedica-Mastodon-Daily-Pipeline

AI models can't distinguish between users’ beliefs and facts, which could be really detrimental in medical settings where patients could have incorrect beliefs about their medical conditions. All models struggle on tasks involving false beliefs reported in the first-person. https://spectrum.ieee.org/ai-reasoning-failures?utm_source=mastodon&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=fedica-Mastodon-Daily-Pipeline

Natcast, the non-profit organization created to run the U.S. CHIPS Act R&D, has been forced to lay off a majority of its staff after the Commerce Department denied it US$7.4 billion in funds. Without support from Natcast, US chip development may stall out.

With the Trump administration cutting support for EVs, it may seem like difficult times are ahead. But companies are still poised to open 16,700 new public chargers this year. Rachel Moses from Electrify America explains how. https://spectrum.ieee.org/public-ev-chargers-electrify-america?utm_source=mastodon&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=fedica-Mastodon-Daily-Pipeline

A new solar panel is here that concentrates the sun’s light onto smaller areas. It extracted about 50 percent more power than previous designs. It’s also cheaper, using less than one-thousandth of the expensive semiconductor materials required by normal panels. https://spectrum.ieee.org/solar-panels-micro-cpv?utm_source=mastodon&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=fedica-Mastodon-Daily-Pipeline

Yesterday, Israeli warplanes struck Iran’s main uranium enrichment facility in Natanz, where Iran has been enriching uranium beyond what is needed for peaceful use. These latest attacks come 15 years after Israel inserted the Stuxnet worm into the software at Natanz, destroying approximately 1,000 centrifuges. Stuxnet is regarded as the first cyberweapon that succeeded in destroying industrial infrastructure in an intelligence operation. https://spectrum.ieee.org/the-real-story-of-stuxnet
