actuallyautistic@a.gup.pe icon ActuallyAutistic group You know what I hate? When people say, "Oh, everyone is on the autism spectrum," because that is definitely not true. I get this reaction when I tell people that I'm autistic sometimes, because I'm low support needs and it's not immediately obvious, but I definitely struggle with many things. Maybe I should be more specific? How do you all handle this?

Yes, all behaviors, tendencies, symptoms, etc. are rooted in common human experiences and functions. That does not mean having broccoli and enjoying weighted blankets makes a person autistic.

My point was that having a few characteristics somewhat in common with many autistic people is not the same as having autism. Everyone has some characteristics that are like every possible psychological condition, developmental divergence, etc. because we're all human, but the extent of those characteristics, their pervasiveness, their pattern, etc. matter a lot.

Harvard students were punished by the university president for expressing unpopular opinions.

They STUDIED for an hour in a LIBRARY, with political messages taped to their laptops.

What if it had been only one student? What if the pro-Palestine message had been half as big? What if it had been half an hour?

There is no narrative worth the pixels it takes on a screen that makes this anything but direct, pure suppression of dissent. The students followed every rule, didn't do any of the things bullshit campus rules penalize in order to stop protests. They didn't block sidewalks, light candles, chant, march, or even (apparently) make anyone the least bit uncomfortable.

So the Harvard admin just flat-out punished them for expressing a political opinion.

STOP THAT.

Exhibit 2: Steinbeck's "The Grapes Of Wrath" https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/752923-the-works-of-the-roots-of-the-vines-of-the

There is a crime here that goes beyond denunciation. There is a sorrow here that weeping cannot symbolize. There is a failure here that topples all our success. The fertile earth, the straight tree rows, the sturdy trunks, and the ripe fruit. And children dying of pellagra must die because a profit cannot be taken from an orange. And coroners must fill in the certificate- died of malnutrition- because the food must rot, must be forced to rot. The people come with nets to fish for potatoes in the river, and the guards hold them back; they come in rattling cars to get the dumped oranges, but the kerosene is sprayed. And they stand still and watch the potatoes float by, listen to the screaming pigs being killed in a ditch and covered with quick-lime, watch the mountains of oranges slop down to a putrefying ooze; and in the eyes of the people there is the failure; and in the eyes of the hungry there is a growing wrath. In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage.”

CEO: We need to cut costs.

Accountant: Okay. We paid you $50 million last year. We spent $10 million on your private jet flights and luxury hotel accommodations. For some reason you are being paid $1 million for this 45 minute meeting.

CEO: I see. Who's that in the hallway?

Accountant: That's Greg. He is the only thing keeping this company from falling apart. We pay him in nickels and Grubhub gift cards.

CEO: Fire Greg.

guyjantic ,

@lowqualityfacts This is my university right now, but on a smaller scale. The president, provost, deans, and various directors make between 3 and 5 times the median faculty/staff salary, and there are so many of them. Most of them have generous expense/travel accounts, remodeling accounts (apparently), beefed-up benefits packages, staff, and (rumored) occasional golden parachute packages hidden in the College Foundation (not open to transparency laws).

They harangue the rest of us for "waste", reducing scholarly and teaching workers by the year (scholarship and teaching are literally the only key services we provide), and making life less fun every month. All travel has been frozen for non-management. We apparently can't afford printer paper. Department secretaries and building maintenance staff have been pared to skeleton crews with low morale to "reduce payroll costs through attrition." Every month there seems to be a new and bizarre method of hamfisted micromanagement. And the president has started eliminating programs that look "wasteful" to him even when solid accounting shows they are solidly "profitable" (in the weird semi-true way that applies to public universities in the USA).

So yes. Day after day being told the sky is purple and the moon is cream cheese, silently daring anyone to challenge them on this and begin a nasty fight with the authoritarians who sign all the paychecks.

The USA is not OK in many areas. Public universities are one of those areas.

I've been thinking about 's speech at the DNC (1st night) for a few days. OK, the part about , specifically.

I decided to annotate my thoughts with terrible graphic design.

Note: the part on Gaza/Israel was about 200 words, just over 5% of the speech. It was placed 4/5 of the way through the speech.

I believe Harris emphatically promised to never stop selling weapons to Israel, but maybe that's just my interpretation.

I think this speech was carefully crafted to walk a fine line: expressing sympathy for Palestine while never implicating Israel in Gaza's destruction and reinforcing Kamala's commitment to .

Only 34% of Americans support Biden’s management of Israel & 55% of Americans oppose Israel’s siege on Gaza.

This proves stopping the genocide is not just the morally & legally smart call—it’s the politically smart call. VP Harris should do exactly that.

@RememberUsAlways @QasimRashid

Yes, the first is the question I referred to. And, as you probably suspect, genocide is genocide no matter who is winning a particular war. Genocide is not war; it is genocide. The victor doesn't matter in the definition.

Thanks, that's what I came to discuss. Not to respond to leading questions about how I feel about Hamas vs. the IDF.

By that standard, Islamic nations get to bomb Israel into the ground. Israel takes Palestinian hostages almost daily, in contravention of international law.

By your logic that means another nation can kill tens of thousands of Israelis.

Follow your own sense of "proportion" and see where it leads.

Faith schools in England will no longer have to offer up to half of their places to children who don’t belong to their religion, under changes to state school admissions rules sneakily announced by the government, after serious lobbying by the Catholic Church.

I propose, therefore, that the 100% funding they get from the state is also scrapped. I don't object to faith schools. I do object to them being funded by the state.
