I have a question about the rise of automation and machine learning to do work that customers will pay for.

When all the work that is valuable enough for us to pay for it to be done is being done by machines that do not need people employed to manage or operate the machines, who will be the customers of the work the machines produce? Because without a job, you have no money to be a customer.

Where do the billionaires think their customers will come from when all the employees are replaced by machines?

Thinking about trying a new iOS Mastodon app (currently on Metatext). I want one where I can set my default timeline to show as one of my lists, not the full list of accounts I follow. Suggestions / boosts appreciated.

Still at in . We stopped the coal ships yesterday, let’s see if we can do it again today! Will post more after the event, I’m trying to just be in the moment for now.

Night time view off Horseshoe Beach with the night flotilla of kayaks in the water. People in the kayaks wear life jackets and head lamps and have had safety training.

I'm no expert but don't just keep it under a chair. Put it in a cabinet or on a high shelf or somewhere safe.

Up front declare: this is not a sad story. It's a very happy one. Via some tricky bits...

Today, Nov 5th is a celebration day in our family. 22 years ago, my son had a bone marrow transplant (aged 23 1/2 months) for a horrendous leukaemia.

We were lucky: we lived 30 minutes from Great Ormond St, kids hospital. His mum was the 2nd parent donor in history (she and I are matched to each other). He didn't reject. We paid £0.

That is the greatness of a health system now being destroyed. 1/n

@JimmyB I visited London in December 2023 to see some programs in your NHS that we were thinking of running in Canberra. They said some of the key things in their model of care have been done that way for over 50 years, but nobody in Australia’s public health system is doing them yet. Not only is it free, there’s also things you do over in the UK that are world-leading in quality care.

Having a parasocial relationship with Taylor Swift means you can stream her songs on Spotify if you don’t want to buy the album, but you don’t get to demand that she put time into making more music. People who like her music seem to understand this, and are more than happy to buy merch or vinyl or concert tickets and make her a billionaire.

How does this apply to FOSS? Go read this by @daedalus

I got myself vaccinated against rubella as soon as I got a job and had turned 18, when I was able to make my own medical decisions. And got vaccinated for measles about ten years ago, when I learned that I needed multiple doses of MMR to get immunity. Vaccinations help reduce transmission. I get them as my superpower to help protect people who can’t be immunised.

My partner has come up with the most Dad tech solution ever for electricity bill management.

Change all the light globes to programmable coloured LEDs.

Red in peak electricity price time, amber in shoulder, green in off peak.

If the lights go red, that’s your cue to run around the house turning off unnecessary appliances and lights.

Really dispiriting to go along to a colleague's first lecture at , the first lecture of a course, and only about a third of students attend. What chance do we have to make a positive impact among students who are so disconnected? academicchatter@a.gup.pe icon AcademicChatter group

Things I love about my Mastodon timeline: at any moment, someone can just drop in and say “my day sucks, send puppies!” And random people will reply with pictures of puppies.

If anyone needs it right now, this is one of my all time fave pictures of my puppies. Pretty sure Harry (upside down puppy) is saying “come play with me! I’m adorable” while Chase (older bulldog) is thinking “I can’t even with this guy”. :blobcatgiggle:

Really glad I’m not in Canberra today. If a journalist asked me to comment on the police commissioner’s claims that he’s not ready to stop arresting children, I would find it impossible to stay silent.

emmadavidson OP ,
@emmadavidson@aus.social avatar

The same police who just yesterday were cheering the additional $112m funding in this year’s budget, while 149 community sector organisations get $25,000 each per year, for 2 years. Then community orgs have to make the case all over again for ongoing funding.

Police aren’t there to provide youth workers, social workers, trauma counsellors, family violence crisis workers. That’s what community orgs do. And yet I only hear police argue for more funding for themselves, never for community orgs.

emmadavidson OP ,
@emmadavidson@aus.social avatar

Basically, the police commissioner says they’re not ready for minimum age of criminal responsibility going to 14 years on 1 July (it’s been at 12 years for 18 months already) because there’s not enough alternative services to hand kids over to if they’re picked up by police for doing something dangerous.

emmadavidson OP ,
@emmadavidson@aus.social avatar

These would be the same police who, when someone on bail for threatening to kill me was continuing to make threats to kill my daughter and we reported it, told us to call back when it’s serious. I can assure you, it was serious. This was a person who had a track record of acting on threats.

emmadavidson OP ,
@emmadavidson@aus.social avatar

Police don’t care about my child. They don’t care about the community orgs that look after the most at risk children in our city. So why do they get the have the headlines about “oh but the children”?

Gimme a break.

I want to hear from Youth Coalition or Woden Community Services or Yeddung Mura about what the kids need. They know, and they should be properly funded to provide it.

Worth watching?

This is the only thing I have to say about Dorinda Cox switching from Greens to Labor.

If she feels that’s where she belongs, then both she and the Greens are better off for her having made that choice.

If you’re in Wagga this weekend, Melbourne next weekend, Newcastle in July, or Tassie in September, I can highly recommend catching Chris Ryan’s new show.
The world is certainly in a bit of a state, and that makes it all the more important to get a few laughs when you can.
Recommended for renters, and people who remember a time when Facebook Marketplace was not a thing.
