pyinfra-docker does not support secrets? is anyone actually using this software???

@dngrs@chaos.social avatar dngrs , to random

is there a UUID-like standard for "ID with integrated checksum" (cf. IBAN)? I'm thinking this could be pretty useful in error-prone scenarios like OCR or "ID gets typed in by hand" (because it was on a paper letter, etc...)

dngrs OP ,
@dngrs@chaos.social avatar

ok so I found https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GS1 which one the one hand is annoying because it's closely tied to barcodes/2D codes, but on the other hand that's maybe a blessing: 2D codes are a useful and kinda standardized way of getting data from paper back to digital reliably.

But I have the I-side L1$ enabled on the M33 now.

Curious: where does Rust currently stand here? The topic of special purpose memory regions and ramfuncs has come up a few times in the embedded Rust matrix room and from my understanding the answer is "cursed linker stuff and inline assembly required" - I wonder if there's a way forward to increase ergonomics (my thinking is a language aware linker and accompanying rustlang attributes; maybe research area for @davidlattimore ?)

I'm seeing this Anil Dash post boosted into my feed by some academics and I'm not convinced by the inevitabilist logic. This logic applies to things like smoking and gambling too — people want to do it, it's popular, it's all around us, we should get used to it if not use it, we don't want to miss the boat.

Academics of all people should also be building spaces where it is possible to resist, where we can deliberate, look under the hood, tinker, critique, and help people make mindful choices.

ALT
dngrs ,
@dngrs@chaos.social avatar

@haui @dingemansemark you can't and shouldn't use "AI" for automation, it also is not a tool. At least if we're talking LLMs. And their hit/miss mechanic is exactly the same as a slot machine's.

A lot of companies in tech are non-profit if we're honest. But the issue really is that by being a "non-profit tech company" you kinda align yourself the the idea of the tech company itself and all the baggage that brings. It's where a lot of the issues (for example with Mozilla) come from

Question for you wizards and wizettes: I'm setting SDL_HINT_MOUSE_TOUCH_EVENTS, SDL_HINT_TOUCH_MOUSE_EVENTS, SDL_HINT_PEN_MOUSE_EVENTS, and SDL_HINT_PEN_TOUCH_EVENTS all to zero, but my program occasionally receives SDL mouse button and mouse moves events for some but not all touch events in addition to the expected correct behavior of actually receiving touch events. Is this, too, a linux, or did I screw up something somewhere?

@dngrs@chaos.social avatar

@GyrosGeier @rygorous @lritter besides being orthogonal to ryg's complaint (AIUI), what else should one store it as? I mean, there is something to be said about text also being the wrong disk format for proglangs (merging syntax trees: much smoother), but in practice there's just very little else out there

dngrs ,
@dngrs@chaos.social avatar

@GyrosGeier @rygorous @lritter this all seems like a very tangential issue, at least to me*; anyway, trying to untangle it:

  • XML-anglebracket-text as a wire format: eh, kinda wasteful, but you can e.g. gzip it I guess; any other kind of representation works only as well as the receiving side understands it
  • XML-anglebracket-text at rest is human readable/editable, and has lots of tooling around it, which I would consider pretty relevant when evaluating alternative XML representations
  • 1/2
dngrs ,
@dngrs@chaos.social avatar

@GyrosGeier @rygorous @lritter personally I don't mind angle brackets, or IDs/namespaces even; for me the cracks begin to show when one has to escape operators, like > in XSLT. But I'm an XSLT hater in general, so...

The Trumps' World Liberty Financial project has frozen WLFI tokens in wallet addresses belonging to Justin Sun that contain ~$100 million (on paper) in unlocked WLFI. Sun is a major backer of the project, which the Trumps say they founded to stop "debanking".

The freeze apparently came after Sun transferred around ~$9M of his holdings to Binance.

The World Liberty team has been desperately trying to prevent the WLFI price from sinking, including by burning tokens to boost the price. They may be concerned that whales like Sun could further depress the token price by cashing out.

A photographer friend of mine had one of her sd memory cards die after a photo shoot. She’s tried Easeus and it can recover about 1300 of 1600 files, but she’s asking if there are other tools/tricks anyone knows from the forensics community that might be able to get the rest. I have a feeling there may just be some dead memory cells, but if there’s any chance to help, I’d like to. Thanks.
