What about Plato's Academy? It was an institution of higher learning, and it certainly existed long before the one in the meme. I'm not saying that the Academy was the first one either, it wouldn't surprise me if there were others before hand.

It seems to me like the claim "the oldest currently existing university" got converted to "the first university" and those are definitely not the same.

@diverging@piefed.social avatar

Whatever university has the strongest claim to be the oldest currently existing university probably also counts as the first university, because of the irregularity of the structure of learning institutions in the Classical and pre-Classical era (to the best of our knowledge).

That's a weird argument. So if the University of al-Qarawiyyin stops operating, then some other place becomes the first university?

Generally we consider a university more like a school - with set staff, set students, and a set course of learning

That's more of a modern understanding of what a university is like (and I doubt it is an accurate description of the mosque that Fatima al-Fihri made).

Academy was a place where philosophers and important folk got together to mutually intellectually enrich each other,

A 'community of masters and scholars' one might say, or in latin 'universitas magistrorum et scholarium' which is the origin of the word 'university'. The original point of Universities was the same as that of the Academy. The teaching of students is just a side effect of achieving that goal since teaching is a great way to learn.

You won't be getting any money back. While you did ultimately pay since the companies that technically paid just raised their prices, that doesn't matter. You didn't technically pay any taxes, so you have no recourse to get it back. This has all just been a massive gift to companies.

Drivers licenses and other IDs are issued by the individual states, which can be issued by the states to anyone they decide to according to state laws. But the federal government (mostly just the TSA which is a part of the DHS) wanted to set a minimum standard for issuing IDs and so if you go through the process of proving you are who you say you are you get a state issued ID with a special star on it that indicates that the US government has 100% verified your identity.

Oh, and the DHS has just said that a real id is too unreliable to confirm your identity.

World's largest lithium deposit, valued at $1.5 trillion, lies under a supervolcano in the U.S. ( www.earth.com )

Buried beneath an ancient volcanic crater on the Nevada Oregon border sits an enormous deposit of lithium rich clay. Scientists now think this quiet landscape may hold enough lithium to influence the global battery market for decades. ...

In Islam, it is believed that creating images of religious figures is the first step toward idolatry. Islam therefore generally discourages the creation of images of religious figures of any kind.

That's technically false. The prohibition is not on creating images of religious figures, but on creating images of any person.

I experienced almost this exact thing last year, it's something that could fairly easily be missed.

We don't really. The largest group is obviously Christian. The second largest group in every state is those with no religion, but they are ignored here. And the remaining 1-13 percent is split among a number of minority groups, meaning that the second largest religion in each state is only about <1-6 percent of the population.

@diverging@piefed.social avatar

Because of this we have blind spots, one for each eye. They are not usually noticeable because 1) the blind spot of one eye can usually be seen by the other, and 2) the brain fills in the gap.

So with this I will perform a magic trick, I will make your thumb disappear: Close your left eye and with your right look at a spot in the background, make a thumbs up gesture and place the tip of your thumb on that spot, move your thumb to the the right continuing to look at the spot in the background, when your thumb moves about 15 cm your thumb should disappear.

You can use your left eye too, just switch the directions.

diverging ,
@diverging@piefed.social avatar

Well, I guess your thumb disappeared.

I can try another way the blind spot is about 15 cm at arms length to the right of the right eyes center of vision. So put your thumb there and it should disappear

German is not the same as Germanic. Both German and English evolved from a common ancestor, which we call Proto-Germanic.

'Who' and 'Where' are '*hwaz' and '*hwar' in Proto-Germanic.

I would say that in this case German strayed more than English.
