Hey people, I've got a UI question.

When I mouse over to a small UI element (e.g. the "Add content warning" button in the Mastodon post composing form) and then move my hand minutely to left-click it, the cursor often jiggles off of the target. This also happens if I remove my hand from the trackpad, mouse or trackball preparatory to clicking.

Is there a UI setting or add-on that addresses this? It's driven me crazy for years and I can't be the only one.

@dashrb@mstdn.social avatar

@pluralistic have you tried using a different mouse, just temporarily, to see if it’s actually the mouse hardware that behaves poorly when stopping, then moving slightly?

dashrb ,
@dashrb@mstdn.social avatar

@pluralistic oh and for what it’s worth (which is nearly nothing, TBH), I personally use a fairly heavy “gaming” mouse from logitech, because (I think) it keeps me from moving the mouse itself when I try to click the buttons.

I guess the theory is, when you’re using a sniper rifle and you click to shoot, you don’t want the mouse moving slightly and this miss the shot.

@verge didn’t musk put a bunch of highly polluting gas turbines in a Tennessee facility, poisoning the environment for those who live nearby?

That’s what I cringed at when trump said this shit: unregulated pollution-making equipment in rural and poor communities.

FedEx or UPS your mail since the US government can't insure your vote or payments for the US government.

dashrb ,
@dashrb@mstdn.social avatar

@RememberUsAlways @deadinside no, but it’s a SERVICE, not a company. It’s not SUPPOSED to make money. If privatized, prices go way up, and guaranteed delivery to every rural address is eliminated as being unprofitable. See rural broadband: ignored by ISPs as too much cost for too few customers.

The entire point of govt is to collect tax money in order to provide services to citizens, not to make a profit. The govt should NEVER be run like a business.

dashrb ,
@dashrb@mstdn.social avatar

@RememberUsAlways @deadinside interesting perspective about BLM, I don’t know hardly anything about them.

The IRS’ job is to collect taxes for the entire federal government, right? Seems obvious that they collect more than they spend. By themselves—though the government spends more than it takes in.

dashrb ,
@dashrb@mstdn.social avatar

@RememberUsAlways @deadinside We definitely agree that sabotage via executive order is undesirable. We may not agree on how to fix it. And that’s ok.

To me one of the disappointments of this admin is that the executive branch repeatedly usurps power from Congress, unconstitutionally canceling or sabotaging their authority; and congress LETS IT.

Whether USPS is protected by law, or privatized, how do we prevent sabotage? Private companies cave too. 😢

@RememberUsAlways there are courts. Immigration courts. Courts that keep hundreds of kids from being flown overseas on a Sunday afternoon, without any due process. Courts that certify an entire class of refugees as protected, and must be returned to the US. These are people that would have been tortured, and/or killed.

During a “shutdown” the executive branch gets to decide who is “mission critical” and thus keeps working (ICE), and who is not critical and is furloughed (courts).

dashrb ,
@dashrb@mstdn.social avatar

@RememberUsAlways it may well be the right answer, sadly. Perhaps more of America will wake TF up, when they see their friends and neighbors being disappeared off the streets. Too many people are okay with this fascist administration.

For the past several months, about 2-5 emails per day have arrived from people bitching about being banned from an illegal movie and network streaming service. I soon learned that all of this service's various domain names include my email address as the point of contact. So when people invariably get banned for spamming the chat box on this unlicensed tv streaming service, they bitch to me and plead to be let back on the service.

Last month I yelled at their Twitter account, which yelled back that they don't run the site blah blah. Just for background: I dislike spam and spammers so much that I wrote a whole book about them. And at this point I was getting so annoyed by the constant wayward emails that I started researching the accounts and things promoting these PPV networks. For a while there I was like, No Mercy! Fear does not exist in this dojo, does it?!? I was even beginning to form a plan to auto-respond to these annoying messages with a vague promise to reinstate them if they could show proof of a donation to a local shelter or something.

But then I thought, instead of going nuclear on these guys what if I just asked nicely? Sometimes asking nicely is the best way forward.

Other casual explanations have merely stated that passkeys are like passwords but safer.
