Because I associated the old English second-person pronouns "thou" and "thee" with Shakespeare and the Bible, I used to think these were formal words. "Thou" and "thee" were informal, and "ye" and "you" were plural, and "you" was for formal, singular second-person address.

Over time, the pronoun "you" evolved to become used for both singular and plural, formal and informal, and "thee", "thou", and "ye" fell out of use.
