I know this nonsense has a lot of people searching for alternatives (like Matrix, Stoat, etc), and those alternatives have a chance to shine right now. BUT we need to go back to discussions and knowledge being searchable on the open web!

I say bring back the forums. It's time.

@evacide nope, Signal is centralized and they do get lot of useful metadata (at least who messaged who and user's identities via phone numbers).
It's trust based if they store or sell this data.

Also it being open source is questionable, as ~100% of users run a binary build with google libraries embedded. You won't find Signal in F-Droid or Debian repositories like proper open source alternatives.

As lot of users already commented, use decentralized or p2p messengers if you need hard privacy.

But don't get me wrong, it's much better alternative than WhatsApp or other fully closed and centralized apps.

@georgetakei thank YOU sir for being part of Star Trek. I've been re-watching the old series and many of the stories are surprisingly good. Star Trek was ahead of the time in so many ways.

Not Japan-related, but since we all need a distraction from The Horrors, Takaya Suzuki points out a study that examined 408 sleeping cats and found the majority (65%) curl leftwards.

I'm not sure how useful this information is, but...it's yours now.

@peertube quick FTUE test, maybe these could be converted to usability enhancements:

  • On launch I clicked on "I know where to go"
  • Typed my instance URL to the search field. Nothing showed up. I expected app to detect it's an instance.
  • I noticed a button "Add platform by URL". I clicked it, and it showed an empty search field. I expected it to copy the existing search field as the URL. But the best would be if it could automatically probe the search text for a Peertube instance.
  • I cancelled the process to write this FTUE test report.
  • Now I'd like to add my own instance again. In "My accounts" view I see only "Sepia" but I can't easily find a way to add a new platform.
  • After a bit of browsing the UI, I found the way. You need to search for something, press "Show more platforms" button under "Platforms" list. It's difficult to find and I expected it to be in "Platforms" top menu.
  • Looks like you need to type https://domain.org/ instead of domain.org. It could be added automatically.
  • If the URL is invalid, the "Connect" button does nothing, it just blinks. I'd expect an error message.

My instance seems to be down, can't continue further now.
I Tried playing videos from explore. Most work fine but some just display "Error: null" in center of screen.
