I speak up for migrants a lot. You know, because I am one. And because it’s the right thing to do. Every now and then, I get a Faragite telling me if I love migrants so much, I should house a refugee.

I love when they tell me this.

Why are we calling crypto-billionaire Christopher Harborne's £9m stake in Reform a ‘donation’?

REFORM 2025 LTD (company number 11694875) is not a political party.

It's not a charity. It's not a church. It's a private limited company.

Since when do private companies accept donations?

Tried to do a lighthearted news morning then immediately got extremely sad. Do not read the news, people. No good can come of it. Something you don't see in the news is that somewhere on this crazy old rock, a load of people woke up full of peace and hope. Didn't have to face a bunch of horrors, yawned and stretched and made coffee and greeted the morning sun with a nice breakfast, and saw their loved ones and listened to music and were bathed in morning sunlight or listened warmly in thick jumpers to the calming rhythmic sound of rain against their window as they contemplated their day. Life is fucking delightful. Let that be in the news. News alert - some people fulfilled. Some people woke up, made love to their significant other, ate some sausages then went back to bed and read all day. Some people took a walk in the crisp autumnal morning light. Stick that in your pipe journo's.

My grandmother used to drink what she called ‘pearl tea’. It was hot water with a little splash of milk and a tiny bit of sugar. Zero tea involved. Lighter even than the top left example.

On October 14, the EU will vote on the so-called Chat Control — a dystopian law which will require messaging apps to facilitate mass surveillance.

President of Signal Foundation Meredith Whittaker says, if the EU adopts the law, her organisation will pull their Signal app from the EU market.

I am both angered and worried by the prospects. Encrypted communication is absolutely crucial, when I speak to sources in countries where people are killed for talking.

I do like the EU … but sometimes they do some really stupid things.

New month, new book thread! My first read of September was Down in the Sea of Angels by Khan Wong.

Wong writes stories that explore the darkest depths of the human soul and somehow he leaves the reader with warm, uplifting, hopeful vibes.

Book 2 was The Murders of Molly Southbourne by Tade Thompson.

Thompson’s mind is a deep, dark well of weird.

Every time Molly Southbourne bleeds, a clone appears. If she doesn’t kill it within the first few days, it goes … off.

Book 3 was The Peacekeeper by B.L. Blanchard.

The strength of this novel is the world-building. This is the 21st century in a world without colonisation. North America comprises multiple independent nations. Modern technology pairs with indigenous sensibilities. I want to live in this world! It’s not quite utopia … but compared to reality, it’s not far off.

New month, new book thread…

My first read for August was I'll Never Tell by Philippa East.

Flawed but fundamentally decent characters just trying to do their best. A messed-up situation. Secrets and lies aplenty.

And the dog lives.

I have enjoyed this cosy fantasy series so much. It's rare that I read this many books in a series. But this is just so good.

Book 4 was Downbelow Station by C.J. Cherryh.

Let’s say you drew a linear spectrum of space opera with character-driven at one end and plot-driven at the other.

At one end, The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet. At the other end, this book.

Book 6 was Gender Swapped Greek Myths by Karrie Fransman & Jonathan Plackett.

The most interesting part for me was the afterword, wherein the authors talk about why they created this. They’re absolutely right: gender-swapping absolutely highlights the toxic masculinity and the inequality.
