It’s February, and the rain that started at the beggining of Dezember, doesn’t stop. Temporary ponds fill, and with them come the first calls of the natterjack toad (Epidalea calamita). Loud, raspy, unmistakable — an early sign that the breeding season has begun.
Close-up of a small natterjack toad (Epidalea calamita) resting on wet gravel at night. Its mottled grey-brown, warty skin blends with the rain-soaked ground, and its dark eye reflects the light.
