this is the hate speech legislation just passed (see below). Pauline Hanson's statement on muslims (I won't repeat it), to my understanding falls within this scope. Charge her.

"Definition of Hate Speech: Publicly promoting or inciting hatred against, or disseminating ideas of superiority over, a person or group based on race, color, or national/ethnic origin.
"Reasonable Person" Test: The conduct must be likely to cause a reasonable person in the targeted group to feel fear, intimidation, or harassment.
Scope: Covers public actions, including speech, social media, graffiti, and gestures.
Penalties: Up to 5 years in prison for inciting racial hatred."

we needed something to put on our paths as stones are too expensive. Also too heavy to move. Got to know the local woodturners club and they drop off their wood shavings every week. It's free to us as otherwise they have to pay to get rid of them. So far its looking good, but might need some mulch on the top to prevent it blowing away.

I’ve lost the post. But the post that said “it’s just as well Obama killed Osama bin Laden because Trump would have given him a White House dinner” - you nailed it.

I remember when I positively shouted at a very senior University bureaucrat: "If the party says I am holding up 4 fingers but I am holding up 5, how many am I holding up?" https://www.blog.lifebranches.com/p/aging-out-of-fucks-the-neuroscience?utm_source=multiple-personal-recommendations-email&utm_medium=email&triedRedirect=true - of course this is a reference to 1984, and of course the bureaucrat had never read anything more challenging than comics and had no idea what I was talking about. You reach a limit.

what a wonderful person Jane Goodall was. I advise young researchers and she is very much a model to follow. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-10-02/primatologist-jane-goodall-obituary/102197696

Last federal election narrative: Australians profoundly reject the right wing call. They are a bulwark against the world wide drift to the alt right. My view: the dramatic incompetence of the Liberal Party distorts the vote. Australia is not exceptional at all. The danger is real.

reminds me of a tech company I knew that went broke. The executives took off on a first class trip and kept going until the credit card was blocked. I have spent too much time with these people. They are the scum of the earth. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-07-22/uts-alumni-senior-executives-us-trip/105554480?utm_source=abc_news_app&utm_medium=content_shared&utm_campaign=abc_news_app&utm_content=other

A military intervention is not a correction. It is a fracture, a wound that may never heal. It is a precedent that can never be undone. It is a door, once opened, that cannot be closed.

A coup does not restore democracy. It destroys it.

@gerrymcgovern as the saying goes "premature optimisation is the root of all evil". First get something that works and then work on making it efficient. The real problem here is that OpenAI does not publish their methods so all of us can work on a low energy way of doing it.

Like many autistic people, I have a highly developed sense of morality, an “over developed conscience” as one of my lecturers called it. I don’t pretend to be a “good” or “better” person. It’s not something I work at, just the way I am, & I have plenty of flaws.

It leaves me feeling… utterly discombobulated by certain situations. The fact that a convicted felon, rapist, liar, cheat, misogynist, racist, narcissist & someone whom I thought might be charged with treason, can still run for high office in a so called “developed” nation.

The fact that escalating climate disasters are occurring, and still new fossil fuel projects are being approved. (How do they get funding?)

The fact that politicians and health authorities are trying to pretend that the pandemic is over, while life destroying long Covid cases multiply & people catch Covid while in hospital, sometimes dying of it.

The fact that western nations continue to support a murderous rogue state engaged in scorched earth retribution.

I’m not a binary, “black & white” person. I get that things are complicated. Gee, I just got back from a trip to Europe, flying 1000s of kilometres, even though I’m concerned about climate change. (I realise that any personal decisions I make in this area pale into insignificance while governments & corporations pay lip service to reducing carbon emissions.)

But there are some things which can’t be denied. Where the cost of pretending that everything’s ok is simply too high - in lives, quality of life, environmental destruction & species loss, the economy.

    It’s wrong. It’s illogical. It’s incomprehensible.

I get that there are some really bad actors, psychopaths etc, & some others who aren’t quite as bad, but are motivated by greed & self interest.

But most people are capable of realising that no matter how fortunate & privileged they might be, even they will suffer if not enough is done to address climate change, Covid, threats to democracy etc. But they choose not to focus on that. They choose to listen to shysters who are amongst the psychopathic & short term profit driven bad actors. Why? (Rhetorical question. I don’t think I want to know.)

@feather1952 actuallyautistic@a.gup.pe icon ActuallyAutistic group @Susan60 this is why I am such a fan of the late Hans Rosling's work. Also his successors (Hanna Ritchie). The sensational is pushed at us intensely, and repeatedly. Whole business empires are built on ruining our mental health. But when you look really hard there are strong forces at work to improve things. We just very rarely hear from them, as it conflicts with the business model.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a report that transforms how the world understands respiratory infections like COVID-19, influenza, and measles.

Motivated by grave missteps in the pandemic, the WHO convened about 50 experts in virology, epidemiology, aerosol science, and bioengineering, among other specialties, who spent 2 years poring through the evidence on how airborne viruses and bacteria spread.

If a respiratory disease spreads through inhalation, it means that people can lower their risk of infection indoors through methods to clean the air, such as mechanical ventilation and using air purifiers, and wearing an N95 mask.

Peg Seminario, an occupational health and safety specialist in Bethesda, Maryland, welcomed the shift after years of resistance from health authorities. "The dogma that droplets are a major mode of transmission is the 'flat Earth' position now," she said. "Hurray! We are finally recognizing that the world is round."
