Because I'm in my feelings: thank you to everyone who fills this place with art, or music, or prose, or poetry, or game prototypes, or fun new apps, or jokes.

We're dancing apes that live to smear ochre on the cave walls and imagine it a herd of bison. To tell ghost stories around the fire and shiver in mock fear. To build a world in our heads and then spool it out and into the oral tradition, where it can grow and change with each retelling.

The art is the point.

Let’s say you attend a religious ceremony or religious gathering place that is not a religion you subscribe to in your life. (If you’re atheist or agnostic, that’s all of them.)

To what level do you participate? Do you go through any of the motions? Do you do it out of respect, not sticking out, or to just temporarily surrender to it? Do you abstain from that? How do you handle it?

alex ,
@alex@tech.lgbt avatar

@louie For Christian services, I'll generally stand and sit with everyone else, but not sing or pray, just to be respectful and so that others aren't distracted from their own participation by me visually sticking out. Likewise, I'll wear anything that I'm asked, like a kippah, or dress as requested (like avoiding bare arms or wearing a hat). I'll bow at shrines and temples since I see it as a respectful gesture, but again, not participate actively. Generally it seems to to down okay! I do live in a very irreligious country, though, which perhaps helps set expectations.

alex ,
@alex@tech.lgbt avatar

@louie yeah, I do know what you mean! I've worried about that in the past, too, which is how I arrived at my current approach, which I hope minimises the risk of someone seeing me as visibly or distractingly not participating, or mistaking it for some sort of protest. I don't have anything particularly against religion in general, it just isn't for me, and I guess that's what I'm trying to communicate! So I'm sincerely participating in my own way out of my love or respect for the people involved, without getting involved with any of the actual religious elements beyond standing or sitting at the right times and dressing appropriately. I'm sure there are situations where people might take that the wrong way, but I do genuinely believe that most people appreciate a respectful gesture even if it's not what they would do personally. It's something I've been thinking about for most of my life without coming to any fixed conclusions, but that's the general area I've landed!

There’s nothing less relatable to me than when Apple people talk about cars (and CarPlay).

alex ,
@alex@tech.lgbt avatar

@louie I often nowadays feel a cultural rift with things I hear from Apple execs, but it’s at its strongest when they’re talking about this stuff. So much of iOS seems to assume that you drive two hours a day each way to your job in California, where a calendar is a reasonable substitute for a weather forecast, but you check your stocks at least hourly, on CarPlay if need be

alex ,
@alex@tech.lgbt avatar

@louie ah, I missed that, sorry! But yeah, it’s really hard to relate to any sort of talk about it from anyone, I find that too, but never really put my finger on it until I read your post there

It's really frustrated the clock alarm in Android has switched from the snooze/wake slider to a button. This is a piece of UI by design I'm fumbling for an object while laying down, tapping a button precisely is very difficult. If I switch out Google for something on fdroid can I get the slider back? Is there an easy way to just downgrade Google apps? The only reason to run up to date apps is security but a clock app probably is unlikely to get vulns.

alex ,
@alex@tech.lgbt avatar

@mcc I don't understand why they've added a slider for incoming calls, but removed the alarm one (unless the teams that work on them just didn't talk to each other at all)

Today I learned that regular expressions have a size limit and you get a “regular expression too large” error if you go over it.

Still trying to find some definitive documentation on what that size limit is in v8/latest Node.js.

alex ,
@alex@tech.lgbt avatar

@aral I’m hoping, for your sake, that this is a dynamically-constructed regex rather than a handcrafted one

Goddamn berlin is next level gay

On the street where I'm staying there's pride flags everywhere, 5 leather/fetish shops and like 2 sex clubs

alex ,
@alex@tech.lgbt avatar

@endali if you haven’t seen the Schwules Museum, I recommend it – it’s a really great look at the history of Berlin’s queer culture

@endali honestly the chaotic energy of quinoa shoved in a sandwich feels extremely fitting for the queer community

i think the term 'car park' is cuter than 'parking lot', it kind of sounds like 'dog park', like you can take your car there for it to play with all the other cars

alex ,
@alex@tech.lgbt avatar

@jk this implies that American ‘dog parks’ should be called ‘dogging lots’

does anyone have a photo of kitsune tails running on steam deck with text visible you could send me?

@eniko is this for the ‘readable text’ Deck compatibility checkmark, by chance?

alex ,

@eniko this… is not how I imagined they checked that, amazing
