I have a coworker who is genuinely worried about my soul because of my love of the occult.

And that's not upsetting to me, it's why I'm so open about the things I read and learn.

I want to get them asking about their gods and questioning how that relationship works. If I can live a life of presumed heresy and sin while being maximally happy and un-bothered by an afterlife then they can too.

My usual go to question is something along the lines of

"Why would god punish me for being my authentic self? For pursuing what brings me joy?"

It always leads into a fun theological discussion.

New post!

Today I outline what sorts of things I look for when deciding if an Esoteric/Occult/New Age tradition is worth investing my time into.

I contemplate capitalism in New Age culture and Bigotry in it's history and modern sects.

There are means to identify what is a good spiritual work verses something with a bigoted agenda or a capitalists scam.

I even talk about getting scammed myself! Several times!

The problem is that White is not a culture.

Its the most distressing fact that the US right now, even in a red state, is the best possible place to be by almost any measure.

And I hate that

@Nagaram@hachyderm.io avatar Nagaram , to random

I do hate that Vegan and Carnivore have become a polarizing phenomenon.

It really does feel like Vegans popped up and slowly a reactionary movement formed to troll vegans and then started unironically eating raw bull testicles.

This is one instance where I think a more centrist approach is correct and the flexitarians are the ones who got it right.

Nagaram OP ,
@Nagaram@hachyderm.io avatar

Which is why I tend to agree the flexitarians got it right. We should be vegan first but also be okay with eating meat.

Its portions and frequency that cause health problems with meat.

Its lack of essential nutrients in vegan diets that causes health problems.

Nagaram OP ,
@Nagaram@hachyderm.io avatar

I tend towards vegan because I'm convinced its a better balance of healthy and empathetic towards animals and the environment.

Whereas the carnivore diet is very firmly in my mind as a selfish philosophy. Its expensive, its bad for the collective humanity because of the environmental impact of meat dependency, and it means we need a lot more animals to go through the horrific conditions of the global meat packing industry.

That being said, I also think both extremes are unhealthy and require serious supplement regiments to be sustainable. And I don't think humans should be reliant on supplements.

I have seriously considered hunting and fishing as my only source of protein in the past. I still consider it, but its such a time sink for basically a mindfulness exercise

You don't have to simply accept something is true. You can ask follow up questions.

Does someone make a Wago-style (lever nuts) connector for low-voltage wiring in solid white?

I'm doing some indoor accent lighting and in one particular spot, the connector is going to be visible if you're shorter than like 5'2". I'm hoping to blend it into the surroundings as much as possible.

In the US Wago isn't as much of a thing, and all I can get is the standard bright orange lever nuts (which are awesome but a bit visible). Worst case, I'll paint them since it's low voltage.

I've always disliked DEI/Affirmative action type deals because its not solving the problems they're allegedly trying to solve. They're almost always just marketing techniques.

"Buy from us! We hire black people!"

look inside

Warehouse workers 90% black while office workers are 90% white

C-Suites have no moral back bone. They're just saying the statistically correct thing at any given moment.

Nagaram OP ,
@Nagaram@hachyderm.io avatar

The CEO of my work place spent the first 4 quarters of my time here going on about how diverse our company is and the last 2 offhandedly saying we "didn't need that DEI crap"

And there are no corporate changes! Like were still hiring just as many brown people and women. Arguably were more diverse than we were 10 months ago!

But that's just how it is in a field that's built on government contracts. You just have to constantly gaslight that you've always had [current executives] values.

To understand the politics of the people defending Nirav's "big tent" position here.

One of these posters characterized what Charlie Kirk previously did for a living as "Just having conversations with people"

@Nagaram@hachyderm.io avatar Nagaram , to random

fails for me a lot but I still use it.

It is useful to me as a rational starting point but is not usually the useful answer.

Take for example the following scenarios.

I'm at work and a colleague in a different department in a different building who doesn't know what I do day to day makes a comment too loud that they "don't believe he even works here." Meanwhile I had been busting my ass on a project they're not involved in.

The stoic control test says they are outside of my control and therefore I shouldn't be bothered.

Another scenario.

A remote project manager is unhappy with my responses to his questions because I am busy working a major project and simply don't have time to talk. I don't report to him or his department but his pull at the company meant that when my project was finished and I was up for a raise, it was denied because of his input.

Now the stoic control test says I shouldn't let that bother me. I should simply work harder or leave.

But that simply isn't satisfying.

The stoic control test is a good means of calming me down but being unbothered isn't what I want. I want to harness this injustice. Use the corporate resources to skill up. Become imbedded in vital work flows. Then demand double the raise once I've secured a better offer.

Hell, maybe I'll even try to unionize.

I don't want to be tranquil about this I want to be mad damn it!

The absurd late capitalism ritual of the good morning Teams message in the department chat is my favorite performance to have mastered.

Honestly, I think it's very funny that Pig Empire liberals have the entire concept of elections backwards. I mean it's obviously motivated reasoning but a very large number of people have absolutely lost the plot in terms of "how elections?"

I cannot stress this enough - it is the candidates job to get elected. If people don't vote for you, if people vote for a third party, if people tell you to kiss their luscious bunghole and fuck off, that's a sign your CANDIDATE failed. Not "voters."

Nagaram ,
@Nagaram@hachyderm.io avatar

@AnarchoNinaWrites

I'll own it. It was actually the left's fault for not wanting to decide between 90% support for cops and genocide versus the 100% that Trump pushed.

Maybe our stance of "Genocide is bad actually" was a little too radical.

Exasperated and disturbed the new IP license in the Mastodon TOS has no termination clause.

https://mastodon.social/terms-of-service/2025-07-01

Facebook and YouTube have terms saying you can intentionally remove your IP grant by deleting the content. Twitter lets you remove your IP grant by deleting your accounts, which is punitive, but possible to exercise (I did). It's very good Mastodon's grant is limited-use—but so was Tumblr, and it eventually abused its. I want Mastodon to be as pro-user as Facebook and Google.

Nagaram ,
@Nagaram@hachyderm.io avatar

@mcc

Interesting. I wonder if it's worded this way as a practicality. As far as I understand it, there's not much built into activity pub to guarantee the removal of ones content.

I thought that if I repost your content onto my private server it's not guaranteed to be deleted on my server. Or did I get that wrong?
