Some people will do anything for money, or maybe they are just in dire situations. Anyway $50k to join ICE might tempt some people.

Well.

  • It's not 50k it's 10k per year for five years. Big difference.
  • It is a five year commitment bonus. You need to work the full five years OR you must pay it back.
  • So if your work for 3 years then quit you owe them 30k! (money you may need for a lawyer)
  • The first 10k will be about $6500 after taxes.

Just so everyone knows.

@futurebird I sure a lot of poor white passing people that will consider this deal. They see a paycheck and they are $6500 away from being homeless.

Age verification is not the way to keep kids safe on the internet. CDT has some thoughts about what kind of child safety policies and features might actually be effective: https://cdt.org/insights/what-kids-and-parents-want-policy-insights-for-social-media-safety-features/

@evacide it's not actually about keeping kids safe. It's about data points and directional graph connections. Kids will get around whatever restrictions you put in front of them. It's a story as old as time. We used to beat the shit out of Bess, kids are jail breaking chrome books, age restriction will stop nothing and everyone knows it.

Donald Trump has pardoned Binance founder Changpeng Zhao. Binance has been a major supporter of Trump's crypto projects, and Trump has already made millions after Binance accepted a $2 billion investment from an Emirati fund denominated in the Trump family's USD1 stablecoin.

One of the people CZ hired to lobby for the pardon is Teresa Goody Guillén, a lawyer who has simultaneously represented the Trump World Liberty Financial project. She's also lobbied on behalf of Binance on crypto-related topics.

@molly0xfff I generally don't think we should fully conflate Trump, his $ETH based $TRUMP "coin" and Bitcoin $BTC. Even with that said i do believe he is using blockchains to get bribes.

MeaningfulBits ,
@MeaningfulBits@mastodon.social avatar

@molly0xfff not saying you specifically are but the general public 💯 percent does. They see "crypto""BTC""ETH""$trump" as interchangeable. I'd personally like to see more public account tagging and blockchain forensics as I'm sure some kind of crime is happening with the Melania coin (and others) you mentioned. My concern is that if someone does prove something fishy will it ever make it to court?

A pretty cool thing about the Fediverse:

It will still be around in a decade. Even two decades.

Usenet still exists. IRC still exists. Email still exists. When you build platforms on open protocols and standards, it doesn't actually matter what corporations try and do to enshittify it. So long as there are people who are still willing to run instances, and users who still want to talk to one another without going through some corporation's platform, it'll still be here.

Last month when it came out Pete Hegseth was doing big group Signal chats sharing operational details of ongoing military strikes, my first thought was "wait, if they're using Signal how are they complying with the Presidential Records Act?"

We now have the answer to that question: "they're using a dodgy, apparently insecure fork of Signal to log the messages". Whether this is better or worse than simply violating government retention rules is a matter of perspective.
