The Rise Of Big Potato

Allegations of price collusions among the potato cartel reveal the new, sophisticated methods food corporations are using to keep prices high.
PUBLISHED JANUARY 23, 2025

Four companies now stand accused of operating as a “cartel” and conspiring to hike prices, jacking up the cost of french fries and Tater Tots around the country. But they’re hardly alone.

HopelessDemigod OP ,
@HopelessDemigod@mstdn.social avatar

After decades of consolidation, just four firms now control at least 97 percent of the $68 billion frozen potato market, the antitrust cases reveal. These four companies participate in the same trade associations and use a third-party data analytics platform — PotatoTrac — to share confidential business information. The lawsuits allege the firms’ collusion has driven french fries and hash browns to record-high prices.

Donald Kinsella, who has worked for decades as a government attorney and in private practice, was appointed and sworn in as the U.S. attorney in the Northern District of New York in a private ceremony, the court said on its website. Later that day, he was fired in an email from the White House.

"Judges don’t pick U.S. Attorneys, the POTUS does. See Article II of our Constitution. You are fired, Donald Kinsella." Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said Wednesday night.

The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York defended Kinsella's appointment in a statement Thursday, writing that it appointed him to the position of U.S. attorney, which was vacant, through its judicial authority to "appoint a United States Attorney to serve until the vacancy is filled."

Several Canadian airlines have issued travel advisories for Cuba as the Caribbean island's major airport warns it will run out of jet fuel by Tuesday.

In an official notice called a NOTAM warns "Jet A1 fuel not available" as of Tuesday, with the warning running until March 11.

This comes days after Canada's federal government issued a travel advisory for Cuba, warning that an ongoing shortage of fuel could affect resorts and flights.

9 In 10 Americans Believe U.S. In Full-Blown ‘Cost-Of-Living Crisis’

In A Nutshell

Half of Americans are struggling to pay monthly bills on time, with an equal number finding it difficult to afford basic necessities like groceries.

Tax refunds have become survival money rather than bonus money, with 73% saying they need their refund more than ever and only 14% planning to spend it on anything fun.

HopelessDemigod OP ,
@HopelessDemigod@mstdn.social avatar

38% of Americans have been forced to move due to costs, with younger generations hit hardest; half of Gen Z relocated because they couldn’t afford where they lived.

Most Americans have given up on their ideal location, with 64% of Gen Z believing they’ll never be able to afford living where they want to live.

HopelessDemigod OP ,
@HopelessDemigod@mstdn.social avatar

Methodology

Talker Research surveyed 5,000 Americans state by state, with 100 respondents from each state.

The sample was split evenly by generation: 1,250 Gen Z, 1,250 millennials, 1,250 Gen X, and 1,250 baby boomers.

All respondents had internet access and planned to file taxes.

The survey was conducted online by Talker Research between December 17, 2025, and January 5, 2026.

As Minnesota Reels Amid Immigration Crackdown, a Sheriff Agonizes Over Her Role

Sheriff Dawanna Witt of Hennepin County says she thinks she could help end the crackdown by allowing some measure of cooperation with ICE. She also knows that could cost her re-election.

The jail she runs in Minneapolis is the largest in the state and the only one that refuses, as a matter of policy, to assist in any way with federal immigration enforcement.

HopelessDemigod OP ,
@HopelessDemigod@mstdn.social avatar

The approach is broadly supported by her constituents, Sheriff Witt said in an interview.

“I don’t think that Donald Trump or Tom Homan are going to leave without feeling like they have some sort of win,” Sheriff Witt said.

“I don’t ever want to be put in a position that I had the power to make them leave and another one of our citizens gets killed.”

Speaking in her office in downtown Minneapolis this week, Sheriff Witt looked weary.

A UCLA-led, multi-institution research team has discovered a metallic material with the highest thermal conductivity measured among metals, challenging long-standing assumptions about the limits of heat transport in metallic materials.

Published in Science, the study was led by Yongjie Hu, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering.

HopelessDemigod OP ,
@HopelessDemigod@mstdn.social avatar

The team reported that metallic theta-phase tantalum nitride conducts heat nearly three times more efficiently than copper or silver, the best conventional heat-conducting metals.

For more than a century, copper and silver have represented the upper bound of thermal conductivity among metals. In metallic materials, heat is carried by both free-moving electrons and atomic vibrations known as phonons.

HopelessDemigod OP ,
@HopelessDemigod@mstdn.social avatar

Theoretical modeling suggested that theta-phase tantalum nitride could exhibit unusually efficient heat transport due to its unique atomic structure, in which tantalum atoms are interspersed with nitrogen atoms in a hexagonal pattern. The team confirmed the material's performance using multiple techniques, including synchrotron-based X-ray scattering and ultrafast optical spectroscopy. These measurements revealed far more efficiently than in conventional metals.

Something I wanted to do for years but it never worked out was listening to HF during a power outage. Today that opportunity occurred.

I went to 20 meters and noticed how quiet the band was even with the wind howling.

As soon as the power was restored the noise jumped sky high as devices throughout the neighborhood came back on. Five minutes later it cleared to normal levels. Had it been at night I would have check longwave.

HopelessDemigod OP ,
@HopelessDemigod@mstdn.social avatar

In my case after the loss of power condition occurred. I unplugged devices or killed the power strips via the hardware power switches.

I didn’t want to restore power to my equipment with everyone rejoining the grid at the same time. I delayed everything by 15 mins then brought everything back up.

I did discover a few deficiencies. Three UPS’s have dead batteries. I need to see if the gel cells can be replaced with LiFePo4 batteries.

When I was young, I fell in love
We used to hold hands, man, that was enough
Then we grew up, started to touch
Used to kiss underneath the light on the back of the bus
Oh no, your daddy didn't like me much
And he didn't believe me when I said you were the one
Oh, every day she found a way out of the window to sneak out late
She used to meet me on the Eastside
In the city where the sun don't set
And every day you know that we ride
Through the backstreets in a blue Corvette

The optimum data rate used to drive the Selectric mechanism turned out to be equivalent to 134.5 baud, which was a highly unusual data rate before the appearance of the mechanism. Driving the Selectric mechanism at the more-standard rate of 110 baud appeared to work well, although at a slightly slower speed.

HopelessDemigod OP ,
@HopelessDemigod@mstdn.social avatar

However, driving the mechanism at a non-optimal rate would soon result in its failure, by forcing an internal start-stop clutch to actuate for each character typed, thus wearing it out very rapidly. Continuous typing at the proper 134.5 baud rate would engage the clutch only at the beginning and end of a long sequence of characters, as designed.

HopelessDemigod OP ,
@HopelessDemigod@mstdn.social avatar

The popularity of the Selectric mechanism caused other computer manufacturers, such as Digital Equipment Corporation, to support the 134.5 baud data rate on their serial computer interfaces, enabling connection of IBM 2741 terminals.

Particularly vexing was the Selectric's lack of a full ASCII character set.
