Chatting with a friend about Cloudflare's intermittent outages today, they brought up an interesting point: How many organizations have started relying on Cloudflare to do basic security blocking and tackling stuff, like stopping SQL injection attacks at the edge? Maybe your devs were lazy at blocking this stuff in the past b/c CF was the control layer to compensate for that.

You might say well okay but if CF is down, so are the sites relying on them, and that's true. But a lot of organizations will switch CF off during these times to keep their sites and services reachable and running. And my friend's point was that for those organizations, they might want to take a closer look at the traffic they received during this eight-hour outage window or whatever, and I think that's sound advice.

For 25 years now, it's been mind-blowing to know that a significant number of orgs (and their developers) won't take the time to sanitize RDBMS queries by using stored procedures or readily available tools/code for parameterization.

It's one of those tech 'problems' that never goes away. 🙁

I've gone back to the Win11 laptop to take another look and see if my perspective has changed.

It has not.

I've reviewed dozens of items in the "Settings" section to try to reduce ads and strengthen privacy. It's tedious work. And if there's one thing Microsoft has demonstrated over and over again, it's their proclivity to "undo" all my changes after a round of Windows Updates. 😠

i love* stack overflow. i love how when you wanna know if a comparison to zero is faster than other numbers, one of the top comments will always be some shit like "This level of optimization is not worthwhile"

and fuck you man. i am doing this comparison millions of times a second because i'm writing a blitter or im writing an interpreter or im writing something else where small gains add the fuck up, maybe on underpowered embedded or otherwise old hardware, so no actually, you utter enterprise brainworm poisoned asshole, it is actually worthwhile and i resent that you're making it my problem that you've never worked on a goddamn thing in your life where performance actually fucking mattered

Hashtags are probably the easiest way to search Mastodon and the Fediverse. I enjoy , the (National Basketball Association), and (electric vehicles). I generally include those hashtags whenever I make a related post.

I've even included them in my profile/bio.
