I am owned by several dogs and cats. I have been playing non-computer roleplaying games for almost five decades. I am interested in all kinds of gadgets, particularly multitools, knives, flashlights, and pens.

Bear in mind that it doesn't actually say "AI" girlfriend. It says "IA" girlfriend. I grew up in Iowa and this all seems perfectly normal to me.

What would you want done with your remains upon death?

I would want cremation. Cremation and a simple marker. I wouldn't be buried at all at my marker, because I would actually want my ashes spread in two separate places. One is somewhere in my hometown and the other spot, probably around the recreational area of my middle school, where I had commonly found peace at. ...

I realize this is an odd suggestion, but think about getting yourself a nice fountain pen and try writing with that. Using a pen that is different from what you're used to can help you focus on the actual process of writing.

That approach makes up a large part of the world in which we now live. It is also one reason why things are as messed up as they are. On the other hand, whether or not to read the news has become a major mental health issue, so I'm not going to blame anyone who avoids it.

‘Bloodbath’ at the Washington Post as Jeff Bezos lays off roughly one-third of staff ( www.independent.co.uk )

We occasionally take care of a friend's small dog. He gets along well with ours, so we just bring him home for those stays. In most respects, he's pretty relaxes, but he is scared of sudden loud noises. Holding him and petting him doesn't seem to help much. He just hides in his crate and whimpers. Poor little guy!

On his last visit, during a storm, I noticed that he had stopped making noise. I went to take a look, and found him in his crate, but with our 90lb husky-mix wrapped almost all the way around it. Evidently that was a form of protection that he trusted, and he had calmed down. Our big guy is a great caretaker who just wants everyone to be happy.

I hadn't heard of Sileo. I'll mention it to our guest dog's owner.

My dog Denali is a remarkable guy. He's too bouncy to make everyone comfortable, but he really tries and he often succeeds. His intentions are always good. Another of his adorable habits is to bring a stuffed animal to anyone who's having a rough time.

Yamaha is amazing. I recently got into playing recorders and their base-level $8 plastic recorder is honestly a great instrument.

Curious_Canid ,
@Curious_Canid@piefed.ca avatar

Leatherman plier-based multitools. They invented the category and they continue to be the top choice. You can get cheaper tools that are adequate, but Leatherman always has some of the best designs, reliably high quality, and outstanding support. I'm constantly trying new tools from all over, but I always end up carrying one Leatherman or another.

Curious_Canid ,
@Curious_Canid@piefed.ca avatar

No offense taken. They are an odd instrument that no one would know about if they weren't forced on every elementary school music student. I seem to have missed that somehow, probably by changing schools at just the right point.

I like the sound, but I particularly like the sound of the lower-voiced recorders. I am mostly playing tenor and bass, which have lovely rich tones. My wife and a friend are both humoring me, so they're playing soprano and alto with me. I'm not any good at it yet, but I am having a good time learning.

Curious_Canid ,
@Curious_Canid@piefed.ca avatar

Yes, I have both a SwissTool and a Spirit. They are excellent tools. I've carried them both at, at one time or another, but I keep going back to Leatherman after a while. I don't think they are better or worse, it's just a matter of what particular uses you have.

Curious_Canid ,
@Curious_Canid@piefed.ca avatar

Gerber has made some very good multitools. They have also introduced some significant design improvements over the years. Among other things, they were the first to build one (Legend) where the tools opened outward instead of inward, which seemed like an obvious improvement to me.

My only complaint is that Gerber's quality has been inconsistent. During some periods they've put out cheaply made tools. During others they've produced tools that were the equal of anything else on the market.

Curious_Canid ,
@Curious_Canid@piefed.ca avatar

I did specify that I was talking about plier-based tools in my original response.

I grew up with Swiss Army knives, back before Leatherman was in business. (Yes, I am that old.) I still carry a Rambler with me everywhere I go.

That has frustrated me too. The Style PS was my idea of a perfect keychain tool, but they killed it in favor of the older, and less capable, Micra.

The character was intended to be a thoughtful conservative, and I thought they did pretty well with that. I'm somewhere to the left of Bernie Sanders, but I don't mind watching intelligently written characters who I disagree with.

Also, I will watch almost anything with Jeff Daniels. He is one of the most versatile actors of our time and he brings depth to every role. His performance is what made "Pleasantville" for me. (I hate Dumb and Dumber, but he added something to it.)

I don't think that is a characteristic of our species. It is not universally true across other cultures.
And studies strongly suggest that the characteristic that was most important to the early survival of humans was altruism. There are always a lot more people who are basically good than basically bad. Only around 4% of the population are sociopathic.

Unfortunately, promoting sociopaths is a built-in characteristic of capitalism. Without controls, it rewards managers who are willing to sacrifice other people for profit (or power). The people who do that the best are those without empathy. So we end up with the worst of us making the decisions about how the world should work.

I'm not sure why either. He didn't even say those things can't exist. He just said there is no clear evidence for them yet, which is true enough.

I find Hancock entertaining, and he may even be right, but don't find any of his evidence sufficient to support the claims he is making. That could always change, in either direction. It is fun watching new evidence emerge.

As the previous responder said, the mesh itself is unlikely to reach that far. MQTT can bridge larger gaps like that, but it depends on the internet. At that point, it probably makes more sense to just use conventional internet methods to communicate.

I think the hardware continues to improve. Unfortunately, Android hit its peak around then and Google has been systematically crippling it ever since. They stopped allowing users control of their own devices. All of the customization and automation utilities that used to make it great have been shut down or limited to the point where they are not longer really useful. But Google is making more money, so I guess that's all okay.

I'm not sure Google has made a single good decision in the last decade.

I think you're doing the right things. I am commenting because your dog looks so much like our Denali.

4pXZa0Xq44TBN83.jpeg

PJivbN2STFY7lKM.jpg

He is half Siberian Husky, quarter German Shepherd, and quarter Akita. It always amazes me that dogs with very different breed mixes can end up looking so similar.

It sounds like they have some other traits in common. Denali is very smart and can open almost any latch. Fortunately for us, he likes his crate. One day, when my wife was struggling to close one of the latches, he closed it for her with his tongue, just to be helpful. If he wanted to open it he would open it.

I've had several dogs that were very independent (including Denali) and they can be a real challenge. My only suggestion is to reach out to your vet, if you haven't already. They often have good suggestions about behavioral issues.

I wish you all the best!
