You're joking... but look into "brightline" with the Florida shit show and how they're now getting further public subsidiaries to make a "profitable" HSR (highspeedrail) between CA and NV. Doing exactly what you're stating but with their ears plugged while screaming as loud as they can.

I was so confused when I saw a cross-post under the post I did. First time seeing how the fediverse automatically links up urls for cross-posts, very cool!

Pretty much day someone parks their car on the tram tracks and blocks our city's tram network from operating

This does unfortunately happen multiple times per day. Sometimes it’s smaller incidents where the tram driver can get out and collapse the car’s mirror. Other times the owner of the car comes out of a nearby house after the tram used its bell extensively (like today) and moves the car. And then there are times when police ...

I'm not even sure if clarification came come to someone who's perceived view of "the arts" is already so negatively embedded into a capitalistic hellscape. I was fortunate enough to have an upbringing around artists and schools that encourage expression through the crafts (even in the south, it was a strange/beautiful time).

My suggestion would be to look into Graffiti art if you're trying to understand the non-commercialized sectors and the impacts they can have on society (link). It's not always about the work itself, but the inspiration it may cause others as well.

If that doesn't help, try to think of it in terms of another non-paid sector. Should the government promote FOSS creators with an income if the output improves society as a whole? This is an investment into a society you wish to see, such like education, not a financial statement which needs to show profits at the end of the quarter.

Biggest difference, if your company has a profitable year... who gets the extra income? An artists effect isn't valued in "capital produced" unless your an art dealer/corporation which is a whole different sector you might be confusing with an actual "artist". Art begets art, art inspires and motivates dreams and visions, it's such a long philosophical debate you can see it being drawn out by Plato in The Republic if you had the joy of taking any intro-philosophy classes (you should look into it, you might agree with some of the cases presented).

Lastly, an abundance of art has always been controlled by the wealthy (might be why you view it as a commercialized product).

Monarchy and aristocracy

In previous centuries the power and wealth of monarchs, emperors and other supreme rulers gave them enormous influence over the employment of artists and changes in artistic taste and style. Understandably their portraits are the largest and grandest, and their palaces are the most richly decorated with expensive paintings.

Taxing said wealth, and allowing the people to freely express themselves without the moderation of the wealthy is a step forward from what was previously and currently being used for the artistic pipeline (you must produce the most valued or commercialize-able creations to continue existing). If the monarchs and wealthy of the world can't convince you that art is important (their art in this instance), I'm not sure how to reach you if it's just a stubborn personal take you refuse to budge from.

There was actually a prototype environmentally friendly airplane designed and tested back in 2000 during a genocide in Yorkshire that I feel like isn't talked about enough. The plane, using bicycle technology, was successful in transporting all of the local populace to safe territory with the help of a veteran Royal Air Force member and an American entertainer posing as a flight specialist. Really an incredible story and there's still footage of the flight. but I don't know the status of the airplane today.

I just bookmark the piracy megathread/wiki thingy, lemmy/reddit (backup). For streaming, I would probably recommend hydra, it's really all the same but that site has "auto-next" which I prefer. There was one site I used to enjoy that was just better than any streaming platform I've paid for, skip intro, skip credits (would even detect after credit scenes), subtitles in all languages and audio tracks even commentary, quick responsive high quality loading of any media your mind can remember. They went after it hard and I haven't seen a proper iteration since (every clone slowly lost features as they were whack-a-moling).

For downloading, they're really all crappy (several link hoops to jump through) and hit or miss (for quality and selection you can't beat the ease of a torrent unfortunately). You can find what you want eventually but the difference in hassle is just crazy.

I'm not 100% on board with sulgoth because it gives off some "but you participate in society, interesting" vibes. However, as an American I am all for people from the rest of the world boycotting our products (and this time not because of the health implications!). When Canadians were promoting non-american alternatives I agreed with them so I think we can say fuck companies and still stand with the actual individual people who want peace and everyone to prosper respectfully.

Wait, are we suppose to be in favor of the first one? I think like maybe a 25% tone down/declutter of the one on the right is a good sweet spot that's comfy and livable.

I was interested to look up the stats since I didn't know and there were downvotes, just gotta say the domestic violence statistics is both crazy high and confusing. It seems every site uses it's own selections of datasets to come up with way different statistics.

I view it kinda differently because that public post is still there (with the creators consent), and you can naturally run into it if you're a member or interacting with that group. However, this is a re-post and specifically a group targeting them as negative which can lead to brigading.

I definitely understand public is public, I think it's more of an ethics/moral choice where anyone wanting to harass the user would have to take extra steps since the information wasn't provided by this platform.

invasive species = non-native. But, non-native doesn't always mean it's an invasive species.

Invasive Species: Any species that has been introduced to an environment where it is not native, and that has since become a nuisance through rapid spread and increase in numbers, often to the detriment of native species.

I don't think having a non-native title is necessarily bad, just that it didn't originate/evolve in that area.

You're giving off some strong "I just awakened my ChatGPT" vibes here. Why not just aim for primordial bliss?

Cataphract ,

I think this is simplifying and twisting narratives. Republicans didn't plan for Trump, but the evangelicals and extremists rolled with it (just like progressives and antifa would've rolled with someone like Bernie). Besides an authoritarian take over of elections, the republicans don't seem to be putting anyone electable up on a podium lately.

I doubt any of us are privy to what the Democrats plan and play long term, if anything they've been more effective at controlling their party if we're looking at them through the lens of being moderates. If you think they're "failing".... it's in the eyes of a citizen and not what their donor's interests are which is the priority of the party.

I am interested to learn about how the rest of the world is handling the "news" issue though, I see a lot of media coming from other countries (like UK and Australia) which follow the same format of fox so figured we were all fucked when it comes to actually vetting what can be labeled as a news source.

Just wanted to put in a counter for what a lot of people are saying in here, if you're looking for a "perfect-clone friend" right out the gate then prepare to be lonely as your tests fail... not because they're horrible people, but because they're a different person with different experiences.

The person litters (like tiramichu suggested)? Probably see's their entire family litter constantly and never gets comments or maybe even once got reprimanded for saying not to litter to an elder. Just ask them not to when they're in your vehicle, take into account their reaction and maybe have a conversation about it? (personal experience, just let me friend know it was lame and he stopped doing it. But now his vehicle is a roaming trashcan so I guess take what you can get)

You can be friends with people who are different or were raised differently than you, it's actually super beneficial! Now if it's a constant argument or it's turned into a negative experience every time and communication isn't working... it might be useful to move on for everyone's sake at that point.

Cataphract ,

Make friends first without requirements, communicate if an action of theirs disturbs you or makes you feel some kind of way. Learn who they are and why they do things before passing judgement. Let them know your experience. From there, evaluate what kind of relationship you want with the person going forward. But, communicate! the reason why. Allow the ability for people to surprise you and change if they care about your feelings (including allowing yourself to change if they present good arguments).

People have friends or acquaintances for different reasons and have different philosophies over what's important in those relationships, mileage may vary.

Cataphract ,

It helps if you're not vague when asking for clarification and quote what the issue is directly, the made-up quote doesn't really help if you wish to get an actual helpful response.

people should be friends with people who litter, and politely encourage them to improve their behavior?

My response: Make friends first without requirements

Or that they should walk away from people that litter?

response: Learn who they are and why they do things before passing judgement. From there, evaluate what kind of relationship you want with the person going forward (is this a co-worker? Someone from a friend group? What kind of relationship is required to move forward)

You can make friends...then unmake if necessary. If that's your confusion.

Cataphract ,

You ok there bud? First day on the internet and you just needed to talk to someone?

This is a perfect example btw, I didn't just dismiss you because of your confusion. But now since you've just been wasting time for clarification you never actually cared about (only to then try to insult in the lamest way possible online), and your other really horrible posts and comments I can easily move on and not care about this interaction at all!

This is some weird "they're just not capable" gate-keeping. Show your spouse what your commenting about them and I 100% believe they will prove you wrong. So she's going the "All lives matter" route? It's really interesting how apparently all of the political pipelines produce the most out of touch individuals who are suppose to be representing the populace. Almost like it's a necessity or design 🤔

Seriously, how would a global democracy work?

This is something I've been thinking about for a while, and it's a huge problem, but I don't really see a lot of discussion about it. The only real barrier to it is logistical (and ...

I've been kicking around the same idea of a "community land trust and housing coop" for the better part of a decade now. It's on my short list of things I want to accomplish with my life that might be beneficial for society. Mixed housing community (large plots, multifamily dwellings, apartments, townhouses), support for cooperative company creation within the community, local store that sells the goods produced by the community (and online), plus actual facilities a community needs to thrive (community education auto/tech/farming/maintenance, help with transportation, etc).

I strongly feel like Cooperative based communities is the only way to gently guide us into a better future. It can compete within the commercialized world while still maintaining growth and development because the profits are being directly funded into the community as a whole. I think one imperative action that needs taken within the coop is the establishment and expansion into other communities so you create a network of these villages that can help sustain each other in harder times. Could even get already established coop's like land-o-lakes or create other mass industry leaders so you're not stuck with small ma and pa stores that can't compete in this style of market we find ourselves in.

Cataphract ,

Could you elaborate for the rest of the class, please? I'm honestly lost unless it's just a made up thing to encompass anyone they're targeting.

Cataphract ,

hahahahaha the democratic primary, funniest joke in this entire post. Love the visual of everyone jumping up like gophers when the dnc alarm rings and everyone comes running. I really need to cancel my internet and cognitive abilities before the next election rolls around.

Cataphract ,

I think it's just not how people feel and this illusion is one of the ways the Nazi party was so effective. You have bot's, paid-pundits, and controlled social spaces just like the propagandist's and silencing of the dissenters before. Look at any poll, local action, or how people around you actually feel. I live in deep red country and everyone who was so pro-maga before kinda are just silent at this point on the actions of the administration but can still focus in on the "them" like they're told. Only takes a few questions to break it down though with reality.

The breaking up of communities is one of the most effective tactics they have, it should be a focus of progressive factions to double down on keeping open communication between neighbors.

Cataphract ,

I think I understand your situation, a lot of the times I feel the same way. I think it's more realistic to focus on those close to us versus trying to solve the countries problems by ourselves. Everything I read or hear is just a study in what are good arguments to bring up and positions that make sense while reaching across the aisle. I consume conservative media and engage in online debates with conservatives for this very reason. It's all just a preamble to understand and try to reach someone on a topic.

There are definitely times and places where it's not welcomed (like in group settings), but if you continue educating yourself and understanding what fallacy they've indoctrinated within themselves, you can find those good times to engage. For example a recent immigration conversation I had with a relative, didn't go so well. Afterwords I reflected and found a good response asking them, "If masked armed people showed up to your neighbors house and started dragging people out, would you intervene or sit there watching?" It put them into the perspective of actually being there during a raid of someone they knew and benefited from, also allowed them to feel the fear and hopelessness when authoritarians come crashing into your reality. It's not much but it's a start and you just gotta go from there one step at a time.

Mass Shootings at Two Homeless Camps After Fox Host Called for Homeless to Be Killed ( meidasnews.com )

Just so you know, you're getting downvoted because what you're saying is wrong and actually contributes to the problem.

Mental Illness and Violence Among People Experiencing Homelessness: An Evidence-Based Review

Please read the full study and it's sources. It's so important and negates a large portion of misinformation you're going to hear. I'll highlight some points in case some people don't want to.

The US media is saturated with coverage of perceived threats to public safety by people experiencing homelessness (PEH) with purported “mental illness.” ... a content analysis of 6,400 tweets regarding PEH collected over three months showed widespread generalizations that PEH posed a high risk of violence and that homelessness was caused by untreated mental illness.3

About 30% of PEH have a mental health condition.73 The framing of these narratives have been identified as further entrenching the dehumanization of PEH, contributing to oversimplified understandings of PEH and mental illness, and motivating policy interventions that are not evidence-based.4 Physicians’ lack of specific training in working with PEH can create additional barriers to accessing care,5 especially since PEH may perceive negative attitudes in their physicians,6 exacerbating feelings of alienation.7 Stigma is pervasive,8 and that experience is often compounded by PEH’s past negative experiences with medical care and ongoing structural barriers to engagement

There's many more passages that are relevant and have way too much info for me to copy/paste here, like:

  • Mental Illness and Addiction Can Be One of Many Precipitants of Homelessness and Should Not Be Seen as the Underlying Cause
  • Homelessness and Mental Illness Are Not Driving Surges in Violent Crime
  • Permanent Supportive Housing is Cost-Effective and Associated with Better Outcomes for PEH
  • Putting People Away Without Essential Care and Basic Needs
  • Learning “From the Misses” Does Not Breed Compassion

Again, you're going to be reading, watching, and discussing homelessness in media for the rest of your life. It's only going to take you 20 minutes to get real facts about the debates and form an evidence based opinion on the matter. Or just disregard and continue watching/reading misinformation to form your thoughts for you.

Cataphract ,

I wouldn't take a few hyperbolic statements made on Lemmy as an opportunity to perpetuate common misunderstandings though. I assure you anyone wanting to focus on arming instead of housing any homeless are just accelerationists and not wanting an actual solution.

If you know any progressive or leftist that supports companies like Apple, Microsoft, or OpenAI, this is the video to show them. It's important to ask the tough question of "What would a company have to do to lose you as a consumer?" Another relevant topic I think that's important and ties into this is Hank Green's latest video on Electricity costs (Electricity is About to be Like Housing), the future and purchasing of energy stocks, and what the tech companies have to gain or lose in the sector.

It's an article about Linus and viewership decline, a lot of people on here (including myself) probably once watched and then moved on. Of course the view:like ratio would skyrocket if less common people are viewing and only his main core is keeping on (who are giving the likes). You would rather people talk about an unsubstantiated claim of viewership conspiracy instead?
