BillyClark ,

There is no check for presidential pardons. Perhaps the pardon itself is supposed to be a check, but there is nothing to stop a president from pardoning criminals who were already serving completely justified sentences.

Most of my complaints about Biden concern his foreign policy.

I thought he was surprisingly effective at domestic affairs, especially considering how reluctant Republicans were to work across the aisle.

I have heard that the files were restricted until Maxwell's trial and appeals ended. Her last appeal ended in October 2025.

Even if it's not entirely faked, you can instruct an AI to give you wrong answers to your questions. So unless you can see the entire conversation history, you can't make any conclusions about a single response.

I imagine if somebody started a thread here that asked the same question, but said, "Wrong answers only," people would find a lot of evidence that humans aren't capable of figuring this out, either.

Taylor Rehmet, a Democrat and local union leader, won a runoff for a state Senate seat that’s been held by Republicans since 1992. What’s more, he bested the Republican Leigh Wambsganss despite having one-tenth as much money. Much of Wambsganss’s funding came from Dunn and the Wilks brothers.

Republicans blamed low turnout for Rehmet’s victory, while pundits opined that the Trump administration’s unpopularity was to blame.

In America today, these are the same thing. The way you win is by encouraging certain people to vote and discouraging other people from voting. Trump has been taking care of discouraging Republicans and MAGA from voting all by himself.

I really think America needs mandatory voting to stop this behavior, but it's much easier to encourage or discourage people to vote than it is to actually carry out the will of the people.

    BillyClark ,

forcing people to perform an act to legitimize an unjust system

I assume this means that you don't believe votes are properly counted and that all of our elections are "rigged."

If you have that belief, then what reforms do you think are possible? Most people who I've heard express those opinions are far right wing people who want to discard democracy.

    BillyClark ,

it’s unlikely to win many supporters

If I could just somehow get permission to amend the constitution for one day, I'd fucking shove democracy down people's throats so hard, totally against their will.

    BillyClark ,

In Australia, for example, which has mandatory voting, the only requirement is that you participate. So, you can do the equivalent of submitting a completely empty ballot if you want to protest.

If she doesn't eat any creature that feels pain, that doesn't mean she's a vegan. She might be a vegan, but that statement makes her a vegetarian by most definitions.

And he's snuggling with pigs on pig farms. I think there are some people who would say that such actions are only possible on exploited pigs who are headed for the slaughterhouse, and therefore, because he has made himself part of the meat system, he wouldn't be a vegan, either.

I'm not a vegan either, but I find it weird that SMBC would use that word so loosely in a strip where the definition of "vegan" is so central.

Does ICE stand for Inhumane Cruelty and Executions?

    BillyClark ,

    According to the article:

A grand total of zero — zero — grand jurors agreed to return the proposed indictment. As a former federal prosecutor, I have never heard of this actually happening before.

Pirro also personally appointed the two prosecutors who worked on the case: One of them is a lawyer and dance photographerwho had never worked in the Justice Department before last year, and the other is a former staffer for House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-Ky.), who is not exactly famous for conducting competent and nonpartisan investigations.

“The average person doesn’t appreciate how stunning” it is for a grand jury to outright reject an indictment, as a former prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s office in D.C. put it to me. “The rules are skewed so heavily in favor of the prosecutor that it’s almost comical. But the public is essentially saying, ‘We do not trust you. We are skeptical of you.’”

In a statement, Pirro touted the office’s prosecutorial work, including efforts to curb homicides, and said she was focused on law, not politics.

If you prefer to avoid single-purpose kitchen appliances, then you will prefer toaster ovens to toasters. (Also, a normal oven can do.)

A toaster oven is also the superior appliance for making toast as it can toast bread that has already been loaded up with things like butter or peanut butter.

I think I see one toaster oven in the list, listed as D tier, which makes sense for that one because it has a built-in coffee maker.

But where's the normal toaster oven in this list? That would be S-tier.

    BillyClark ,

    reheating pizza

    Blasphemy!

Cold pizza is the world's greatest food and this is a hill that I am willing to die on!

    BillyClark ,

When I open the door on my personal toaster oven, it automatically pulls a rack partially out of the oven (using a little hook on the door), so there is no need to put my hands inside the appliance. Knowing this, I position the food items toward the front of the rack so that they will come out easier.

You might have to be careful when removing things that have toppings or whatever, but since a normal toaster can only produce dry toast, it would be unfair to leave those items in the comparison criteria. So, we should just stick to dry toast.

With a toaster oven, you can always just grab dry toast from the top edges, and your hand, which we've already established doesn't need to actually enter the toaster oven if it has a feature like mine, doesn't even have any chance of coming into contact with the rack, either.

I also don't think a toaster oven is necessarily slower than a toaster. It simply depends on the heating elements. Even among toasters, some are faster than others.

I will admit that subjectively, it probably feels like toaster ovens are slower due to a difference you didn't mention, which is their more complicated controls and mechanisms. But since my recommendation was predicated on not needing overly specialized tools, I think a lot of specialized tools are simpler to use than general use tools. And this difference becomes smaller and often irrelevant as you get used to the tool.

    BillyClark ,

Comparatively, in the US, it costs just about that same amount to remove a single foreign object from an uninsured patient's rectum.

Google criticizes Europe's plan to adopt free software ( pplware.sapo.pt )

Google has criticized the European Union’s intentions to achieve digital sovereignty through open-source software. The company warned that Brussels’ policies aimed at reducing dependence on American tech companies could harm competitiveness. According to Google, the idea of replacing current tools with open-source programs ...

    BillyClark , (edited )

I never worked for Google, so I can't say for sure, but I have this weird suspicion that they use a shitload of open source software, and I'm not just talking about their Android OS or Chromebooks, but for their most core businesses.

It wouldn't be odd to think that Google might not exist except for their being able to use the open-source software that people had made before they founded their company.

The alternative is that they were complete idiots who paid for all sorts of retail software.

Of course Google hates open-source. They can’t compete with it.

Again, it's just my supposition, but I'd bet that they can't compete without it, either.

For any major tech company, apart from ones that are absolutely dedicated to proprietary software starting from firmware up through the OS and on to applications, like Microsoft and Apple, it's going to be deeply hypocritical to hate open-source.

    BillyClark , (edited )

You were using the phrase correctly. "They can't compete with it," is the standard way of saying what you intended to say.

I was playing off of the normal meaning of your statement to make a turn of phrase. In other words, I am intentionally using weird phrasing, and placing it next to your normal phrasing for humor and impact.

I think Marjorie Greene made a similar declaration.

They should make a form letter version of this for all Republicans who don't 100% kowtow to every small wish from Dear Leader.

    BillyClark ,

I noticed something similar with video. Like, if I am paying attention, the difference between the highest quality encoding and the next level is usually visible.

However, I have a harder time telling the difference if I don't do a side by side comparison.

And even when I can easily tell the difference, once I'm watching the thing, I get into the story and I don't care anyways.

Obviously a slightly different criteria compared to music, but people do make a big deal out of stuff that even they don't actually care about.

At PAX, the Penny Arcade Expo, a large video game convention, they have an event called The Omegathon where random attendees play a series of video games to decide who is the best.

When the event has proper commentators, it is the best thing at PAX.

(Unfortunately, most of the time, the person with the mic barely commentates and doesn't even tell the audience which competitor is on which screen, which sort of ruins it for spectators.)

    BillyClark ,

I don't think you can find the statistical answer you're asking about because it is hard to find data for events where people don't call the police.

Like, police may keep records of how many street fights they break up, but if police are not called, then there is no organization to make the record of the street fight.

I've done a little bit of language studying and one thing I heard about repeatedly is that people tend to mistakenly believe in their own exceptionalism.

Like, their own native language has idioms, and they just assumed that other languages didn't have idioms.

But we are all humans and languages are all going to exist in support of human communication. Therefore, you should assume that all languages have all major features of expression, including idioms and sarcasm.

Similarly, cultures are made from humans and to facilitate human interaction, so you should expect that things like sarcasm will exist in every culture.

One of the many fundamental problems with ICE is that they seem to have little to no training.

Police with no training should not be allowed to perform traffic stops or to arrest people. Or really to interact with the public at all.

One of the ICE failings we've seen over and over is how they needlessly escalate situations. If you pull someone over and they flee, if you pursue them, you have to consider the danger to others. Sometimes you just have to let them go and figure out how to pick them up at a later time when it is less dangerous.

Yes, it makes policing more complicated, but if police are escalating situations and making things more dangerous, that's an even larger problem.

ICE has such a bad reputation now that I think people will flee at a much higher rate. Their lack of training is part of the reason they're causing this mess, and if they want to keep pulling people over, they're going to need massive amounts of training to learn to do it correctly. Even more than normal police because the situation today is what it is.

    BillyClark ,

Like I said, ICE has many fundamental problems.

I don't disagree with your assessment, but experience is not the same as training, and there is also a continuing need for training, even for experienced people.

I have wondered the same about scammers. Like, if their mother knew they were going to do that with their life, she'd probably regret all of that wasted effort raising them.

    BillyClark ,

Similarly, if you're accused of a crime and you're poor, you might not be able to afford bail money, so you'll be stuck in jail and you'll inevitably lose your job, ruining your life, regardless of whether you're guilty or innocent.

Meanwhile if you're rich and an Epstein co-conspirator pedophile who raped and sex trafficked children, the government won't even arrest you.

    BillyClark ,

Was Van lecherous in previous episodes? When he started talking to himself about that lady's tits, it felt out of character, but maybe I just forgot.

I also wonder about episodes like this, in general. I'm sure it costs extra money to animate a dragon fight, but it still wasn't animated very well. And they did that old bullshit where the characters are like, "We're in mortal danger and have mere seconds to act, so let's sit here and talk about it for a few minutes before we do anything."

The armored lizard defense wasn't perfect, but it was far better than this dragon nonsense. It feels like you shouldn't spend extra money on fight animation if the result is going to be worse than normal.

Man, I have a few anime that I watch on Wednesdays, and all of the episodes were respectively the worst episodes of their seasons this week.

Don't feed the trolls. Report, block, move on

Very good advice. But if you have some sort of personality defect that makes you occasionally engage with trolls like I do, here is some additional advice:

Make your comment less effort than the trolls. Don't argue every point. Focus on their weakest point.

Essentially, if you can't resist responding to a troll because you're an idiot like me, make it like one short sentence where you point out their biggest mistake, and then if they respond to you and you respond back, keep doing that and never let them change the subject. At least you're causing them to waste effort.

Okay, you don't want to prosecute everybody in the files because it will collapse the system, so how about a cut-off? Just prosecute the ones who are mentioned above a certain number of times. Like, if your name is mentioned more than a few hundred times, you can get a full-time FBI agent assigned to you.

And if, God forbid, there's somebody in there who is mentioned over a million times, you get a dedicated team of dozens of agents, special prosecutors, and forensic experts who will work non-stop until you're serving a life sentence.

That seems like a reasonable starting point, right? Better than just throwing your hands up in the air and doing nothing.

    BillyClark ,

Probably the pages where his name was mentioned tended to have more than one mention.

And then there's that one page they found in Donald Trump's handwriting where the same phrase is repeated over and over hundreds of times, "All work and no play makes Donald Trump rape little children." That's a joke. You know it's a joke because Donald Trump has never actually worked in his life.

Grand jury declines to indict Democratic lawmakers who urged service members to disobey illegal Trump orders | CNN Politics ( www.cnn.com )

A federal grand jury on Tuesday declined to indict Democratic lawmakers who posted a video urging service members and intelligence officials to disobey any illegal orders from the Trump administration, according to two people familiar with the matter. ...

    BillyClark ,

Note that grand juries typically only hear the prosecution's arguments. The prosecution has immense power in grand juries as a result. That's why there's a famous saying that a grand jury would indict a ham sandwich.

The fact that so many grand juries have declined to indict major cases brought by the DOJ is a major embarrassment. It means that even an average person off the street can immediately see through their bullshit.

    BillyClark ,

The founding fathers had diverse beliefs. Even if they had been far right Christians, that certainly doesn't say anything about the world today.

Just like it used to be that Muslim scholars were some of the leading scientific and mathematical minds in the world, but that was the past. It doesn't mean anything today.

Probably the stupidest idea, though, is to call the founding fathers "Nationalists." They rebelled against their nation.

    Three thoughts about Troi.

One is that this is her area of expertise, and she's had a lot of experience with Data, so she shouldn't be so confidently saying something like this, which very likely either leads down the path that Data isn't a person, or that people aren't people.

Two is that as an empath, she may be unconsciously bigoted against those whose emotions she cannot sense.

Three may be her actual defense, which is that she's a counselor who is actively counseling a patient. So, it's possible that a counselor may have to say false things to a patient if those things are the things that will help the patient the most.

I'm not sure that you can boil down an old philosophical matter so easily, regardless.

I like to bring up the zombie thought experiment in these situations.

As a person with a long history of intermittent insomnia, I had this bad feeling last night that I'd not be able to go to sleep no matter what.

So, I did what I normally do in those situations, which is probably not the right thing, by the way. I stayed up and tried to distract myself until I forgot about that thought. It usually eventually works, but last night, I couldn't seem to forget the thought, and at about 4:30 am, I was so tired that I thought I should be able to fall asleep, regardless.

And I did fall asleep, but I think it was around 6. In retrospect, I should have just taken some medicine at midnight.

The Republican is Thomas Massie, as expected. It seems that he is one of a few Republicans who will act ethically as long as the topic is Epstein.

I realize what I'm saying is basically the same point as the post, but I can't help myself..... What was that moron talking about? When normal people get into arguments, it's over mundane everyday shit like forgetting to wash dishes or being irritated about friends or activities. Not stuff that you can cite.

Normal people don't get into arguments with their partners about shit where the answer is already known and you just have to look it up on Wikipedia or something. And only a moron would argue against the already proven truth.
