Watching scramble because of some rumor The Oregonian ran with about the leaving just has me scratching my head. Like, if it's that important to the local economy, it's time to eminent domain the team into public ownership. If not, then what's wrong with the arena and why can't their billionaire owner afford to fix it?

Oregon should be pushing hard to externalize the cost of private desires of billionaires back on them, not just rolling over for them.

BalooUriza OP ,
@BalooUriza@social.tulsa.ok.us avatar

@cy This just hit me: I don't remember what was there before the Rose Garden Arena. I know about Memorial Collesium (and high key think it's still the better of the two adjacent hockey/basketball arenas), but what was across the street from the Collesium before?

BalooUriza OP ,
@BalooUriza@social.tulsa.ok.us avatar

@cy Also a mystery to me. I'm guessing "a black neighborhood" just given the way Portland bulldozes those about once every 30 years for some reason.

I just have to point out that the choices are always "Jank that improves with time" or "corporate jank that becomes worse with time". And the latter just adds to personal technical debt over time when you arrive at the same crossroads again when the corporate jank kicks in.

I dunno, what's going on in the US suggests why it's a fucking good idea to let the public know who the police are like we know who our representatives are. Good cops don't have to worry about the public having that info.

@cygnus@lemmy.ca avatar cygnus I feel like nearly every time I hear someone called a gringo, it's meant pejoratively, and most of the time when it doesn't get the intended reaction from the person directed at, they're usually too ignorant to get that they're being insulted, which is usually a component to getting called out like that in the first place.

That said, is there room in the world for a competitor to Señor Frog's?

Let's take a trip back to the year 2000, 25 long internet years ago. A year in which Flash websites proliferate, blogging expands, social news sites like Slashdot gain influence — all of this while the dot-com bubble slowly deflates and Napster dominates headlines. https://cybercultural.com/p/internet-2000/

(special thanks to @GroupNebula563 & @Steve for suggesting Homestar Runner, the perfect Flash website suggestion for that year!)

@BalooUriza@social.tulsa.ok.us avatar

@ricmac All Your Base would have also worked, since that meme went so viral you'd go to HP, Apple, Dell or Amazon and their usual slogans and logos would be replaced with versions that included "All your base are belong to us" for a few months.

Something that could make Mastodon safer and more pleasant to use would be reply controls.

This would optionally allow users to specify who can reply to their posts, so that people who experience abusive replies from bigots, trolls etc can pre-emptively prevent that happening.

It would also give people a middle option between follower-only posts and public posts.

If you're comfortable using Github, you can vote for this by giving a thumbs up at https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/14762

If you post a website link on Mastodon, remember to include https:// at the beginning so that it is clickable.

When you include https://example.comclickable link like https://example.com and you may also see a link preview box below the post.

If you leave out https:// you just get a non-clickable address like example.com and no preview.

🤓 Special Bonus Tip For Nerds: You can also use other protocols for clickable links including gemini://, dat://, dweb://, gopher://, ipfs:// and ssb://

@ValueSubtracted@startrek.website avatar ValueSubtracted As a former Scout, I really want to like this show. As someone who's watched too much cartoons, the "every line is yelled children's voices in high-gain microphones" and a straight up fugly animation style are massive put-offs.

BalooUriza ,
@BalooUriza@social.tulsa.ok.us avatar

@StillPaisleyCat@startrek.website avatar StillPaisleyCat It's not that I can't hear the voicework, it's that the voicework is seemingly intentionally awful, even for preschool programming. Contrast to, say, Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood or Carl the Collector, which manages to target that age group without screaming every line.

@ValueSubtracted@startrek.website avatar ValueSubtracted I feel like the writers were visibly struggling with being painted into a corner by some extent by TOS, which would have been progressive for the 60s but backwards by the 90s. With a side order of being stuck, depending on market, with following or competing on another channel against Baywatch (mostly reruns but still).

Today I learned vistas largely consisting of factories, freeways and military bases occasionally interrupted by the green and grey blur of cliffs and trees is "scenic". Not to knock Cascades: it's dependable higher speed regional rail. But I personally think it's about as scenic as Metrolink Los Angeles' Antelope Valley Line for about the same reasons.

@BalooUriza@social.tulsa.ok.us avatar

@ben Arguably, American Truck Simulator. Mostly because even compared to its Euro cousin, and despite the trucks being faithful recreations down to their specs, American trucks are all fairly closely matched in capabilities and styling and don't offer a lot of distinguishing elements outside of creature comforts.

So I just got back from a Menards run and I've noticed something fascinating:

Menards has always had a lot of store brands. But they're really pushing a new food brand called Marcella. Stuff like coffee, jams and jellies, prepared foods, sodas, etc. A lot of it is fairly unique - I bought a maraschino cherry cola on a whim and it was pretty great!

The weird part? They're pricing this in-house stuff higher than name brands. The soda was a tad more expensive than the Sprecher's next to it!

BalooUriza ,
@BalooUriza@social.tulsa.ok.us avatar

@TechConnectify Oh, that's what Menard's thing is exactly? I now know what a Menard's is. Sort of like a...Atwood's or Tractor Supply Company?

I recently bought a hybrid car to replace my very much clapped out 2005 Corolla.

Assuming its internal fuel mileage data is accurate my comfortably sized SUV gets better combined fuel economy than a 24 HP i2 Polski Fiat despite having nearly ten times the power.

Electric drives, even just assisting things, are pretty insanely efficient.

BalooUriza ,
@BalooUriza@social.tulsa.ok.us avatar

@beeoproblem I get better than the manufacturers combined pedal assist range on my folding ebike. Probably because on crosstown trips, I'm not using it as a crutch, I'm actively pedaling and just having the motor nerf Tulsa's steep hills from "this might actually kill me" to "really aggressive cardio"
