the anarchist solution is to abolish property, meaning picking the fruit tree clean wouldn't actually give you anything besides a bunch of rotting fruit and others will probably get angry and stop giving you the stuff they make

Aatube ,
@Aatube@kbin.melroy.org avatar

this isn't a "people will manage the commons" argument; "that reason" is property itself which anarchism wants to abolish

Aatube ,
@Aatube@kbin.melroy.org avatar

the idea is that everyone knows the idea that nobody owns anything, so they'll boycott that person with zir rotting fruit and stop delivering their own stuff to zim so this person with the irrational mindset will have to confront that ze's ostracized. (of course, ze could still steal stuff from them if ze wishes, but ze no longer have the social feelings of receiving a gift.) if there are no apples anywhere else they're supposed to revolt and take the apples by force because of how used they are to the status quo, and if that person wants ze can start a hermit life somewhere else and ask for people to join zir quest about rotting fruit

pretty much every war movie

the classics have got Saving Private Ryan, Nolan's got Dunkirk, Best Cinematography's got 1917, Ghibli's got Grave of the Fireflies (released same day as Totoro even)...

for anti-war that's not depressing, there's also AFAIK the over-the-top Helldivers

for things that feel "clean" instead of bloody there's the elegant video game Nier: Automata

Aatube ,
@Aatube@kbin.melroy.org avatar

I would compare the action scenes in Saving Private Ryan to the "action scenes" of Schindler's List. It tells you how hard all of this is, how everybody's confused, how nobody knows what they're doing, how it's all a hellhole. I would not describe Schindler's List as "glorifying" the plight of the Holocaust victims. It tells you how horrid this all is, not that you should be part of it.

(FWIW, Saving Private Ryan and Thin Red Line are often put in the same category of "glorifying the people who fought in WWII". But in my opinion, "glorify" here means "elicit sympathy for their effectively-forced situation", and not "glorify", which I would say is something like La Grande Vadrouille (1966).)

I'm not sure what film of which you can't claim specific lenses would color them contrary to their intentions.

i find it great on the iphone too, especially with the new swipe interaction to go between tabs (not the safari kind; like in the app store swiping from today to apps). the cornering of buttons works wonders. plus i personally dig the aesthetic though i understand a ton of people don't

I consider multitasking a discrete part of the OS, not Liquid Glass. i do have some thoughts on it though

for what it's worth there are gestures they don't tell you that make the multitasking so much easier: toggle maximization by tapping the top of the window, and then as they mention you can snap it to either side by smashing the window in a direction

also they added back drag and drop to Split View in iPadOS 26.2. after three months they finally have a stable release of this multitasking thing

I have found multitasking useful especially with stage manager, but I completely understand those who don’t like it and just want an option to restore the old multitasking. I also miss Quick Notes (workaround through a shortcut button just isn’t the same)

interesting; how does one copy from an empty field by accidnet? /geniunely curious and oblivious

Aatube ,
@Aatube@kbin.melroy.org avatar

ah i have had that happen before lol. it does copy spaces but it doesn't overwrite your main clipboard so i don't have qualms about it. every app you'd expect to support middle-mouse drag except notepad/gedit/kwrite/etc supports it instead of pasting unless you use chromium without the relevant extension or remain static over a textbox.

Jordanlund removing links for being hosted on Substack again

Since yesterday, Jordanlund is continuing to remove reporting like that from the reputed https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drop_Site_News (article depicted in the screenshot is https://www.dropsitenews.com/p/israeli-spy-yoni-koren-stayed-jeffrey-epstein-apartment-ehud-barak?utm_source=publication-search) just for being hosted with ...

4 hours ago, Jordanlund comments "Blogsites, including substack, are not allowed." on the post "Israeli Spy Stayed for Weeks at a Time at Jeffrey Epstein's apartment "

I mean the entire design of Lemmy was just Reddit + "implement vote with feet feature". It seems effective and I don't really see what's wrong with it. Listening to the community is supposed to be the admins' job.

Aatube OP ,
@Aatube@kbin.melroy.org avatar

Fair point. I'd use the same arguments about web building platforms, though. Al Jazeera uses WordPress.com, the web building platform not the software. Jordanlund has removed sites for being hosted by WordPress before IIRC.

(IMO Substack might unfortunately be the lesser evil: Medium doesn't compensate writers nearly as much, Blogger is owned by Google, and WordPress.com is pricier and waging an ego contest under Matt Mullenweg.)

i’ve never seen a meta thread in that commag. i suspect that Jordanl enforces the “post news articles only” rule quite well. here’s where it’s been discussed:

@ChairmanMeow@programming.dev avatar ChairmanMeow : > Then they're welcome to pony up for a domain registration... answered Then they're welcome to pony up for a domain registration... by @jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar jordanlund in Ye Power Trippin' Bastards

phoneymouse : So, op-eds from main stream media are allowed, but... answered /c/politics basic rules: by @jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar jordanlund in politics

Jordanl simply repeats the same argument about X and disengages when people ask him to respond to the well-known refutation

A heart attack is not an ailment. It's like getting bruised: certain people in certain situations are more likely to get it, but it's not a disease or condition and just randomly happens. everybody gets heart attacks

Aatube ,
@Aatube@kbin.melroy.org avatar

Apparently I was wrong: Most heart attacks are caused by https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coronary_artery_disease . The article says that Bernie Sanders doesn't have heart disease nor familial history of it, though. Hope you live long!

Waterfox hasn't been owned by system76 for years now

https://www.waterfox.com/blog/a-new-chapter-for-waterfox/

To me, the main selling point of Waterfox is that it includes a lot of useful userChrome.css toggles. For example, disabling the tab bar and hiding sidebar headers for use with TreeStyleTab.

Waterfox also does disable telemetry by default through using the https://github.com/yokoffing/Betterfox config

Is comparing social media to a dangerous drug over the top? Not according to the U.S. Surgeon General’s office, which in 2023 released an advisory titled “Social Media and Youth Mental Health” (download it now before RFK Jr. suppresses it!), which summarized extensive evidence of mental health damage to children and adolescents who consume excessive amounts of social media.

Okay, that comparison's still wayyyy over-the-top.

Aatube ,
@Aatube@kbin.melroy.org avatar

It's not just about digital privacy. It never talks about data privacy. It's about consumer protection and social media's nature being harmful. The only European law violations mentioned are anti-scamming + "𝕏 refuses to make its public data available to researchers". It's also explicitly in favor of KOSA, which lets the FTC ban anything it wants from children's eyes online. It's quite implied that the article supports banning social media for youth.
