The word "squirrel" comes from the Greek word skiouros, combining skia (shadow) and oura (tail). The #Squirrel of the Day for February 15, 2026 demonstrates #squirrels

A Gray Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) stopped on the ground to eat an acorn. The rodent uses its forepaws to hold the food while gnawing. Scatter-hoarding is a primary behavior, burying seeds for later consumption. #Squirrel#Wildlife#Ecology#NaturePhotography#Rodent

A wooden deck with feeders hanging off the rails and sunflower seeds scattered over it.
One squirrel is close to the door, another one is at a peanut feeder on the rail on the left side. Four are in an open area of the deck, two actively eating, two searching. One is sitting under a chair next to the open area and the eighth one is under the table, partially obscured by the closest chair’s leg. Four of the squirrels are reddish in color, the other four have a more grayish-red coat.
Squirrel half hidden by the snow. We see the head and upper body, and part of the tail, sticking up from a deep hole in the snow. It is facing to the left, and the sun is on its back--there is a shadow in front of the squirrel. The rest of the frame is filled with snow.
A red squirrel standing up on the back legs, white belly exposed, staring straight into the lens, with slightly menacing postures. Trees in the background.
