Asio flammeus (short-eared owl). Oddly, the "ears" aren't actually ears but rather tuffs of feathers that they can raise or lower depending on mood. And checkout the eye makeup--lol! SEOWs have low breeding site fidelity, they don't breed in the same place each year. That makes it very hard to determine population size. I participated in a multi-year study to attempt to determine SEOW population in the West: https://www.internationalowlcenter.org/uploads/1/0/3/1/103197186/2020_wafls_comprehensive_report_v1.0.pdf
A color portrait photo of an owl with really big yellow eyes standing on a stump. The owl looks off toward the left. It has two tiny tuffs of feathers on top of its head that resemble short ears. The owl has a light colored chest with dark brown stripes. The wings are the opposite, dark brown with light colored stripes.
An owl, perched on a branch in the night, looks at you with big, orange eyes, its lethal silhouette profiled by the white disc of the Moon, which also lits some clouds from below, because the drawing was a bit empty.
Alert Owl, by Richard Shorty. Photo from the side because of the glare. #SuperbOwl#owl
A framed art print of the piece Alert Owl by Richard Shorty, done in Northwest Coast Native style, specifically Kwakwaka’wakw. An owl clings to the trunk of a bare tree, peering over their shoulder. The bare tree branches form the shapes of beaks of other birds. Black lines with gray fill and red accents.

For #SuperbOwl Sunday, here’s my Perpetual Journal art of 2 very superb owls: 2 Great Horned Owls calling back & forth (duetting) along with a Cooper’s Hawk & a small Mexican Poppy plant.
My 2025 Perpetual Journal watercolor and pen art of 2 Great Horned Owls calling back and forth; my 2024 Perpetual Journal watercolor and pen art of a small Mexican Poppy plant; & my 2023 Perpetual Journal watercolor and pen art of a Cooper's Hawk, all in Tucson, AZ, for the week of January 22-28.
Photo of large owl perched on the branch of a tree. The branch runs diagonally through the lower part of the frame, rising from right to left. The bird's body, with a pattern of black, beige and orange stripes, is facing the camera, which looks up at the bird from below. The owl's head is turned slightly to the right, its big eyes with yellow-orange iris and huge black pupils focused on something distant, outside of the frame. Feather tufts that give the bird its name "Great Horned Owl" are nicely visible against a backdrop of out of focus green leaves.
Black and white photo taken from an elevated position. It shows an urban setting with large buildings either side of a road that runs from the foreground to the background. Some of these buildings have advertisements painted on them, and the most prominent of these has white lettering out of a dark background that reads "Owl" (from Owl Cigars) but written in reverse.
I am watching you is a watercolor painting in portrait format painted by the artist Karen Kaspar. An owl is sitting on a branch. It has lowered its head and looks at the viewer with a penetrating gaze from its bright orange eyes. The plumage is painted with loose brushstrokes in shades of blue and brown. The background is white with splashes of colour in the same shades as the owl's feathers.
A red-figure lekythos featuring a stylized owl perched on olive branches on a glossy black body, with reserved red-orange clay for the figure and fine painted details; narrow shouldered form with flaring mouth and footed base, shown on a white stand against a plain background.

A very small, unbelievably cute screech owl baby, maybe 5 or 6 inches tall. He's old enough that his feathers have recently come in but he's still developing his adult coloration. He has enormous dark eyes and a light brown mask around them. His belly is a wavy pattern of white and light brown. You can't see it, but his back is a little darker, the color of baked beans, which gave him his name. He sits in the corner of a painted cinder block room on top of towels on the floor, with a water bowl next to him
Baby owls, not always cute. Sometimes, they look like death warmed over, right after waking up but before the coffee is ready.
My sister calls this his "mouldy strawberry" phase.
Anyway, here's another picture of Beans taken the same day as the previous post. I don't think he's quite awake yet #BakedBeansOwl#owl#owls#zoo
My friends, as it is Superb Owl day, I would like to show a more recent picture of Baked Beans, taken back in January. He now has his adult plumage and is quite majestic, particularly since he's all sticky-uppy. He was being taken past the gorilla play room and did not like the gorillas. #superb_owl#SuperBowl#BakedBeansOwl#owl#owls#screechowl#screechowls#superbowl2026
