hey, #MakersOfMastodon! I'm doing some research about the #maker/#DIY#community, and am wondering if you can #help me out with some insight as to how you typically discover virtual and in-person maker-focused #events? 🛠️🎟️✨
I was going to do a #poll, but decided free-form might be more insightful, so please just reply with the platforms, publications, communities, and other resources you find most useful, and don't forget to please #BoostForReach! 💗✨
We keep prototyping our Forest in a Box and we’re now at stage 0.2. The first iteration felt much more like a contemplative object than an actual game, so we began adjusting the balance by removing some animals and introducing new elements with clearer play potential. Next, we’ll focus on defining the sizes and relationships between the pieces.
The #knitting "travelling project" is a simple baby or lap blanket - 7 colours of Drops Baby Merino in garter stitch. It doesn't get much simpler!
The lace is Nim's Windflower pattern (via Ravelry,) the #yarn is Lichen & Lace's Marsh Mohair (mohair & silk) in Sage - https://www.lichenandlace.com I am only at row 54; that ball is a bit more than a third of the yardage, so it is barely begun. Hoping to complete this year, but no deadlines!
A complex lace knitting project is spread on an off-white countertop, with the ball of yarn and the pattern chart above. The yarn is slightly hairy and thin, dyed a yellow-green with some darker variegation.
#PhotoOfTheDay Since my photo yesterday with the polished hammer faces was popular, here's another example of contrasting polished/unpolished finishes... These are two photos of butter knives that I made a few years ago.
A blacksmithed butter knife with a snake- or dragon-like tail. The blade section is polished but the handle section has been left with a dark "blacksmith finish."
A green glass acrylic dip pen stand made with a curved strip bolted to a roughly trapezoidal base. A notch accommodates the shoulder of the pen at the top while a circular cut-out at the bottom keeps it from sliding. The elegran dip pen in the stand is violet with a clear tip. It sits next to a bottle of violet ink on a tray with a mother-of-pearl bottom and black sides.
Finally pulled together a prototype with this little board – one of my new #Charmware set, reviving the series of modular tech #jewelry bits I started back in 2018. Been dreaming of assembling these with elytra and bike-leather, and the day finally came... The board still needs some tweaks (smaller switch etc.), but with my fixed-up #KiCad workflow, those will be a snap. 😸
“If it’s worth doing, it’s worth overdoing.” These are words I often live by. My son recently started experimenting with #linocut printing and made me this for Xmas. I framed it and hung it on my shop wall with some other maker art. #maker#printmaking#woodworking#framing
A workshop scene featuring various framed prints with quotes about craftsmanship, a sign reading "Empire of Dust," and a red Maker emblem. There is a wooden structure on the wall, a power tool on a work surface, and a tool named X-Carve
after like 5 hours of angrily finnicking with this hunk of junk in my hotel room, wanting to give up all technology, and questioning if a Walmart headphones to USB adapter might not be a very good ADC…
I got a gamma spectrum that looks decent :ElainaXD: though different from the one I got before :ElainaSmug:. I’m actually a lot more confident in this one tho, there’s even a tiny peak at ~49keV from U-238 which really makes me confident in this since I have two peaks from the decay chain that line up perfectly and the other big peaks are low-energy fuckery (X-Rays/Backscatter/???) and around ~187keV which is probably in part U-235 (this is depleted uranium but it’s not 100% depleted)
I breathed such a sigh of relief when I found oh hey another U-238 line and it lined up perfectly with the previously-mysterious ~49keV peak……. :ElainaCute:
I tinker on stuff. Wood stuff, metal stuff, digital stuff, and so forth. Portland, OR resident since 2000. I like #bikes. And #sailboats. Politically rather far to the #left. But revolutions aren't JUST about lining fascists up against a wall. They take everyday #communitybuilding and #kindness
#Cyberpunk Go Board project update: it's done! The "bowls" don't have traditional lids, so there's no place to put captured stones, but I can live without it. What do y'all think?
Okay, as I get these finished it's time to run side by sides against the design.
The tip of the steam got a bit ragged on some pieces, otherwise I think this one works well. It ends at a 0.16 mm round, I'll step it up to 0.3 and that should save some grief. #Maker#design#LaserCut
Rounding over the edges by hand (rasp then sandpaper) is now the slowest part by far.
I suspect a piece this small would be kicked across the room by a router table (possibly followed by a finger tip).
Anyone with woodworking experience have advice for rounding the edges of small pieces? It's 6mm thick if that changes your strategy. #maker#AskFedi#woodworking
Just two months to Hot Chocolate Fest, time to start planning this year's charms! First, a redesign of the back, I'm going to try for single piece designs for all the art pieces so I can raster the hole but cut the fill all in one. Going to tweak the mug side, something like this.
Does the steam read properly? Might be wandering too far... Or not enough? #HotChocolateFest#maker#design
Mug logo with the number 26 and a line of vapour rising above it
I like the idea of a stained glass mug motif, but I think I need something to fill the empty space. Anyone have any suggestions/requests? #maker#design
Three mountain bikes hang vertically in a garage, just inside the door. The bike hooks are fastened to the underside of a high shelf which is secured to the garage wall with diagonal reinforcement.
This modern yet rustic wall-hanging LED tea light holder adds a warm touch to any room. Made by my hands, it's lightweight enough to hang anywhere on a small nail or Command strip hooks.
Available in Cherry, Dark Walnut, and Cherry/Dark Walnut two-tone colors! Comes with 3 warm white flickering LED tea lights.
3 handmade laser-cut wood wall sconces in L-to-R Dark Walnut, Cherry, and Cherry/Walnut two tone. They are tall and narrow with rounded tops, bottoms and candle shelves, and feature a layered geometric floral pattern behind the candles.
Good day all! Thank you so much again to
@anca for joining me on Fireside Fedi. I had an absolute blast and can't wait to talk to Anca again in the future.

Gonna try my luck with FreeCAD one more time, and try designing something I want to construct. I do like the idea of constraints for designing a thing (a tools drawer in my case), but it's totally backwards to what I'm used to do in Blender.
It'll either cause my brain to bleed, or produce something that doesn't explode by looking at it too hard lol Goal is to produce a blueprint out of it, which is one of the purposes of FreeCAD.
I can still do it in Blender with some precision if I fail.
This has put a much needed smile on my face. Went way better than I expected. Glad to confirm I can still make something decent, and I can say I did something useful this entire year.
Missed an opportunity to engrave something with my laser engraver though. Next time probably. I think I will build another one since I have another space to put a second one. Really useful already, now my workspace is better organized.
