This seems to be true for most users. However, I feel that the administration is toxic and nontransparent. It is not very transparent on reddit either. However, maybe I should go for a different instance.

Unserer ist wieder eingemottet. In der Zeit in der man den Boden dafür frei genug macht, Stühle hochstellt usw. ist man mit dem normalen Staubsauger auch schon fertig. Würde mir daher gut überlegen ob bei euch Räume, Böden, Kanten und Ordentlichkeit auch wirklich gut dafür geeignet sind.

Interessante Kombination! Aber das Problem ist doch dass man heute für 95% der Aktivitäten den Browser startet und dann ist eigentlich egal wie das OS aussieht, dann fängt das Chaos an.

Das betrifft jetzt den PC. Am Handy wie ich gehört habe starten die jüngeren gar keinen Browser mehr, sondern gleich die TikTok-App und ähnliches.

Yes, but fact is, that this is the easiest way for most users. And also most users don’t care if you can use it stand alone on a PC or not, and if it is linked to a phone number or not.

You can use devices to cross-sign each other or use a passphrase.

Thats why I personally prefer Matrix.

However, the solution that Signal offers is the easiest for most people. Also it is not true that you always need the phone. The desktop version works fine alone unlike Whatsapp it doesn’t request you to connect the devices all 2 weeks. It does need a first installation on a Mobile or Android device in order to get the PC version running.

The difficulty is when you need to exchange the encryption keys between different clients. This is where it gets complicated with Tox and Jabber/OTR. And to be honest the solution of Matrix is easier but also can get confusing for people who are just used to having a phone as their main device.

Gerade Android hat zumindst RCS eingebaut, allerdings über Googles SMS-App.

Und immerhin hat Google damit erreicht, dass Apple auch dazu genötigt wurden den Standard umzusetzen. In einigen Ländern sind jetzt zumindest meine Kontakte über RCS erreichbar. Dass viele allerdings gar nicht mehr mitbekommen dass man ihnen eine SMS oder RCS schickt weil sie einfach nur mehr Whatsapp aufmachen und sonst gar nichts, ist wieder eine anere Sache.

Ja leider, gegen Whatsapp ist kein Kraut gewachsen. Auch beim Familienchat habe ich es nicht geschafft, den auf etwas anderes umzustellen.

Ich sehe zwei Chancen, Whatsapp zu “entkommen”:

1. RCS: Dadurch dass nun (allerdings dank Google) der offizielle SMS/MMS-Nachfolger doch in einigen Ländern etabliert wurde, sind zumindest meine Kontakte in Amerika und Deutschland über RCS erreichbar. In Österreich hingeggen wird das von Providern noch nicht unterstützt und läuft daher nur auf den Android-Geräten (und da über Google). Aber immerhin ist es ein offener Standard.

2. Die Verpflichtung von Whatsapp sich zu öffnen. Der Digital Markets Act (DMA) zwingt WhatsApp in der EU, sich für andere Messenger-Dienste zu öffnen. Bis das aber wirklich auch für die relevanten Gruppenchats gilt, wird noch einiges an Zeit vergehen. Vor allem haben Signal und Threema schon abgewunken, während Matrix interesse zeigt.

Concerning the usability, yes. Otherwise Matrix would be the best option, it can be hosted locally.
