It be sweet if I was on either extreme but to sit on the fence like this (average) just shows my cowardness. I wonder if being flag-non-binary-pride at least puts me in a new categorythinking-about-it

Yo I wear a 4E or 6E in new balance, an H in Red Wing, and a FF or FFF in the pnw boot brands (franks, nicks, etc.) so I FEEL YOU.

If you live in the US and you need work boots, save as much money as you can and buy a pair of Nicks. I’m loathe to worship or praise any brands for anything, but I’m not kidding they fucking saved my feet. No more foot pain and they actually fit. You can find em on eBay and various other places usually for about half the retail price. It’s the one thing I really splurge on.

If you’re a union employee and you’re buying new, they have a program where you send them your union info and you get a pretty decent discount, but you might not get your choice of color/whatever. Boots are generally made to order, so wait times are anywhere from 2-12 months. They also do size exchange if they don’t fit right once you receive them. Their customer service is pretty excellent and if you have questions give them a call and they’ll walk you through the process.

I would suggest buying used first to find your size as their sizing is weird. I wear a 12 4E in new balance, but an 11 FF in nicks fwiw.

Break in can be brutal. They use intense leather. Very much not vegan just fyi. I know that’s a dealbreaker for many hexbears.

I didn’t expect to be writing a boot ad this morning but here we are. After living a lifetime with foot pain I’m just grateful my feet are happy is all.

For sizing, make sure you measure your feet with tailor tape and follow their size guide.

As for unions, they are totally hit or miss depending on what local you’re in and what kind of work you do, and honestly fuck unions for the most part, but there are some good locals out there. Here’s some unsolicited info dumping on my experience with unions.

I don’t need to know what your field/trade is, but I found the best contracts and jobs are typically at legacy institutions (state or county agencies, public or private universities, prep schools, etc.) in or near large cities. You’ll generally make less per hour than folks working through the union hall, contractors, etc., but you’ll make up for it with a static schedule/hours, not traveling to job sites a million miles away, no hotels, not working outside as much (unless that’s your thing), typically chiller supervision, and the Bennies are usually pretty stellar. The strong locals have strike funds matched by their national as well. I don’t know that I’d worry about pension contributions so much, because I’m pretty sure amerikkkan markets are gonna go belly up long before being eligible to draw from a pension.

This is not a badpost, it is truth. Being a size centrist of any sort is the worst. I used to be 6’0” and probably… iunno… 400+ lbs?? (I didn’t stand on scales back then so I have no idea what I weighed, but at my biggest I was a size 54 waist in Carhartt pants and a 4XL in shirts so yeah I was big (no fat shaming here, just facts)) and could always find good clothes at second hand stores for next to nothing. Now I’m like, fairly athletic and a size large/xl in tops and a 32-34 in bottoms and… it is substantially more difficult to find good clothes on the cheap.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s clothes for me out there, but being big was tight (pun intended lol). Donations in big and tall sizes always seemed to exceed sales volumes, and a lot of big dudes wear Carhartt and other similar stuff because they’re one of the few off the rack brands that makes big sizes in decent quality. Being mostly average sucks because the good shit is harder to come by because the pool of people looking for it is substantially larger.

Centrism in all its forms is garbage.

I guess I just need to get jacked.

Not to stalk you but I remembered you said you didn’t want that info getting out there lest you become meme-ified, I really restrained myself from pointing it out when I saw you comment on something completely unrelated to stature in another thread.

Take it from me, you don’t wanna be a short arse.

Nothing is built to accommodate your need to reach high things, which then impacts what you can wear because you gotta dress in anticipation of climbing. People don’t take you as serious as they should. Dating is a hellscape of people who absolutely won’t be normal about your height. There’s less clothes in your size in the shops so you gotta do all your clothes shopping online which sucks 'cos there’s never any actual indication of how the fabrics feel, and like, that’s one of the most important parts of clothing.

    Fucking sucks.
